Production crews for the Travel Channel’s "Man v. Food” were in the Oklahoma City area last week to visit three restaurants for an upcoming episode.

The show, hosted by Adam Richman, highlights an eating challenge in a given city or area while featuring two other eateries in the same locale.

The challenge segment was shot Thursday at the Steak and Catfish Barn, 5175 E Waterloo Road in Edmond. Dino Smalley, who owns the place with his wife, Maria Vitale, said Richman was going for the title of Top Cat, which is a yearly challenge to customers. The record for most catfish eaten in a single sitting is 28.

That show is not my cup of tea...nothing entertaining about watching someone gorge themeselves.

But still great exposure for OKC!

Not all his segments are challenges....sometimes they just visit popular restaurants in the area.

So what do they say about the quality of the catfish at Steak and Catfish Barn?

We like to watch the show.

Not all of the challenges are gorging, most are, but some are heat challenges too.

Usally he eats at a couple of restaurants that are locally famous or serve a distinctive fare before he attrempts the challenge.

I have been a big fan of this show for a while now, and always wondered which eating challenges he could do here in OKC. Guess the catfish barn was the answer. I always thought we lacked more unique resturants like that on the Man v. Food show. What other eating challenges are around OKC?

"Smalley was told by producers that the episode of "Man v. Food” will air in August."

Looking forward to watching it!

I'm thinking a full-sized Shorty Smalls chicken fried steak dinner would be a good challenge for him.

This guy could eat four of Shorty Smalls meals.

I heard he visited Big Truck Tacos. Also, that Sunday night I saw him at RePUBlic as I was leaving. Seems like he didn't want anyone to notice him.

Yes he was at BTT but no cameras were present.

Papa Angelos in Bethany has a challenge to eat one of their big pizzas. I have trouble eating one slice from that pizza myself. They have a large wall of shame with all of the losers and only one picture of a "winner"

Are there set toppings, or can the challenger select any X toppings?

You pick 3 meats & 1 veggie, all total it is 6lbs of toppings & cheese

Nice. I am most assuredly not a fan of bell pepper in any incarnation or of onion texture (raw or cooked, it doesn't matter.) I can easily handle finely minced or powdered onion, but you don't find that on commercial pizza lists.

But if I can pick three meats and something like mushrooms or green olives for the veggie, happy happy times appear to be ahead!

I went there for lunch and read the rules to clarify. Fist of all it is called "the Empire" challenge since that it the name of their 20" pizza. They state that you must choose at least 3 toppings and at least 2 must be meat so it does not appear you have to have a veggie at all. And the entire pizza, crust and all must be consumed by one person within 45 minutes with no bathroom breaks. There also appears to be a few more additions to the "wall of shame" since I last visited (I think I saw Xavier Henry's picture up there) and no additions to the one count them one "wall of fame". If you fail in your attempt they actually put two pictures on the "wall of shame". Before and after. It appears as if most men (they are all men) fail miserably leaving at least half of the pizza uneaten. Kevin, if you do decide to try this you better let us all know so we can egg you on.
