View Full Version : Photography meet up
Steve 05-19-2010, 08:18 PM Alright, I've been watching this long enough.... let's make this a bit more fun. Here's my proposition: figure out how to choose a "best photo" of the batch and if you would like to have your photo seen by a couple hundred thousand readers, I'll use it along with a column about your outing. Oh - one more thing: can I join you?
Spartan 05-19-2010, 09:27 PM Hell yeah, Steve.
Steve 05-19-2010, 09:39 PM So, is it Saturday? Just let me know when and where....
okcmomentum 05-19-2010, 09:47 PM i'm jealous. wish i could be there. let me know if you do another one. can't wait to see the pics.
jstanthrnme 05-19-2010, 10:05 PM This sounds really cool.
Local tourism...I wish more people would do it on a random day instead of just big events..
dmoor82 05-19-2010, 10:21 PM Alright, I've been watching this long enough.... let's make this a bit more fun. SkyWestOKC 05-19-2010, 10:50 PM I'll know for sure by tomorrow if I can attend. Do we have a time nailed down?
Spartan 05-19-2010, 10:58 PM So, is it Saturday? Just let me know when and where....
Saturday at 5 on North Broadway.
Doug Loudenback 05-20-2010, 06:58 AM The sun won't be up yet. But I'll be there.
Wonder what it would cost to hire one of those carriages or bicycle guys for a couple of hours.
SkyWestOKC 05-20-2010, 10:17 AM The sun won't be up yet. But I'll be there.
Woah, Woah, Woah. Slow down. This is at 5AM?
Spartan 05-20-2010, 10:39 AM NOOOO 5 pm.
SkyWestOKC 05-20-2010, 11:05 AM That's what I had thought, not sure why the sun won't be up though?
Doug Loudenback 05-20-2010, 11:46 AM I was just funnin.
jbrown84 05-20-2010, 08:12 PM I won't be able to participate that late in the day. Have fun!

Hey Doug, is there a way that you could help shuttle some of us from Site 2 to Site 3? I can walk and I'm sure some of the others can walk, too--but some may not want to, and that will be kind of a long distance. We might even just be driving and reparking our cars frequently, or carpool more likely..we'll have to work that out. Here's a walking map I've put together:
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/3535/36073079.jpg
Highlights are..
1: Wonderful Automobile Alley..enough said.
2: The cool buildings being restored along 10th, skyline views, and the churches.
3: Harvey has some awesome density, awesome streetwalls, awesome views--and some parking garages we can get up on.
4: Middle of the city, Park and Broadway..and parking garages.
5: Sheridan streetwall in Bricktown, ACM, immediate Canal bldgs, parking garage with a view, AND Walnut Street bridge view.
6: Awesome Deep Deuce..enough said.
7: Lofts at Maywood..cut in the middle, check out Brownstones and Maywood Park sculpture.
That's it. What do you guys think?
dmoor82 05-20-2010, 09:20 PM ^^Try to take as many pics of The Buildings planned to be demo'd by Sandridge!Devon Tower site,St. Anthony rotary-Plaza court<--might be to far to walk!just some suggestions!but I have no doubt Spartan has a good route planned out!
Spartan 05-20-2010, 09:22 PM I might be changing it..forgot about Devon actually. Maybe we should forgo Park Ave and from Harvey, wrap around the west side of the library and then go down Sheridan..sort of through the construction. We would miss out on the downtown core but get the construction.. which do we want?
dmoor82 05-20-2010, 09:31 PM ^^maybe ,you could split half The group up from Park/Harvey and send Them to The Devon Tower site and then meet up in Bricktown?but i would not miss out on The core of DT where The skyscrapers are, because there are some good dense angles there!
Spartan 05-20-2010, 09:39 PM Yeah. We might just miss out on Devon. I think it's a better idea to do a construction and progress theme for a second photog tour. Devon, Myriad, Film Row, SandRidge, etc..
TaoMaas 05-21-2010, 07:48 AM I know I'm flip-flopping on you, Spartan, but I originally thought you guys might be hooking up earlier in the day. There's a good chance I'll be back by 5pm and can participate. Put me down for a "maybe".
Spartan 05-21-2010, 04:16 PM Okay cool. Don't forget everyone, tomorrow @ 5 pm!
Doug Loudenback 05-21-2010, 04:33 PM I'll look at this more closely when I get back from doing an errand, but it looks promising. I'll have to clean out my car's floorboards with all of the McDonald's etc. clutter, but that would be a good thing.
I'll be back.
Steve 05-21-2010, 04:57 PM 5 p.m. - where is the starting point?
Spartan 05-21-2010, 05:12 PM 6th and Broadway--middle of Automobile Alley.
krisb 05-21-2010, 10:40 PM This might be a little late in the ballgame, but any chance we could do 4pm? 5pm is a little close to my dinner w/ the family. I'd love to be a part of this.
Spartan 05-21-2010, 10:41 PM Well..it's running a little late unfortunately. I would have moved it up earlier today, I'm just afraid people won't be aware of the changed. I'm about to send out a final heads up to all of the people I could confirmed. You could just come from the A-Alley part if you like.
Sorry Kris..
SkyWestOKC 05-21-2010, 10:41 PM 4pm would work better for me also, how long do you think this will last? I am about 75% yes right now.
Just saw Spartan, 430 would work for me.
Spartan 05-21-2010, 10:44 PM Where did you see me? Yeah we could probably do 4:30 if it makes a difference to TWO more people..
SkyWestOKC 05-21-2010, 10:45 PM Sorry, just saw your post. How long do you think this will last? I have somewhere to be at 6PM.
Spartan 05-21-2010, 10:46 PM We'll probably be in Bricktown or Deep Deuce around the time that you have to leave..we're probably going to drive from place to place and use parallel parking, as well as carpooling--so leaving in the middle shouldn't be a problem.
SkyWestOKC 05-21-2010, 10:48 PM Okay, cool. I'll see you guys tomorrow then.
Doug Loudenback 05-22-2010, 10:03 AM I'm going to have to pass on this afternoon's photo shoot. Have a great time and I look forward to seeing some classy photos!
SkyWestOKC 05-22-2010, 10:44 AM Hopefully the weather will improve.
lasomeday 05-22-2010, 01:01 PM I'm flexible, I can meet whenever.
Spartan 05-22-2010, 01:55 PM Hopefully the weather will improve.
I think it did. By 4:30 it's gonna be HOT.
Steve 05-22-2010, 03:16 PM Guys, due to some family matters I can't join you as I hoped. But please take photos of the group of you going about your task so I might make use of it later....
Spartan 05-29-2010, 11:50 PM So when are we gonna do this again?
so1rfan 05-30-2010, 04:30 PM Scott Kelby's Third Annual Photo Walk is for July 24th. You can join a walk or lead one. Last year there were two in OKC and both had full rosters of 50 people. More info here: Oklahoma City, OK USA (Bricktown Main Street) | Worldwide Photo Walk (http://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/oklahoma-city-ok-usa-bricktown-main-street/)
Spartan 05-30-2010, 07:56 PM That's a really interesting web site.
Spartan 05-30-2010, 08:20 PM Here's my downtown pics..shockingly dead, except around the Skirvin. SandRidge has so much potential..for now.

That's it.
so1rfan 05-31-2010, 01:17 AM That's a really interesting web site.
I signed up, I wanted to do this last year but didn't know about it until too late.
betts 05-31-2010, 08:58 AM I don't know what day of the week you took those, but if you look at those buildings I don't know how you could be shocked that it's dead. There's no reason for anyone to be on those streets on the weekend. The least busy part of London on the weekends is The City, which is also shockingly dead considering their population. If all the buildings in a location are only used Monday through Friday, there's little reason to be there on a weekend.
What surprised me when I walked home after the Lets Talk Transit meeting was how
many people were on the streets downtown on a Tuesday evening. I saw people walking their dogs, going to bars, going to restaurants and just out and about. It's better than you think.
TaoMaas 05-31-2010, 10:03 AM Downtown is funny. I work in the First National Center and they lock all the doors and shut off the A/C at 6pm! It always cracks me up. I ask myself, "In this whole building, are there no people who work past 5pm besides me?" lol
I wish I could have made it to the photography meet-up, but I didn't get back from my field trip until after 6pm. Downtown is a favorite subject for me. Here's a link to some of my pics: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/taomaas-albums-downtown-oklahoma-city.html Okay...there's a couple in there from the Farmer's Market, which isn't technically downtown, but I still think of it as the general downtown area.
Spartan 05-31-2010, 02:07 PM I signed up, I wanted to do this last year but didn't know about it until too late.
The problem is I just did Bricktown..want something else now. lol
Larry OKC 05-31-2010, 05:48 PM Must have been in one of these old threads but the lack of people in pics was something brought up over and over again. I think a lot of it has to do with the tendency of the person taking the pic (if of buildings etc) is trying to get the "perfect" shot and many don't want strangers mucking things up (blurring etc). May not be as big an issue with digital (the blurring part) but think it is a throw back to the film days which wasn't that long ago. The last time I took pics (on Mother's Day) I remembered that and tried to make it a point to ignore the people moving thru the shot...take it anyway. nned to get those printed....
lasomeday 05-31-2010, 06:13 PM I was trying not to have people in my pictures but everyone else was trying really hard to have people in their pictures. There really was only one or two people besides us on Broadway. There were people by the Memorial and other than that there were people from the Skirvin to Bricktown.
Spartan 05-31-2010, 07:07 PM I think OKC has vitality, but if you can't prove it in a picture, how can you prove that it's there?
lasomeday 05-31-2010, 09:06 PM Yeah, I just like taking pictures of buildings......and the landscape in general. People just get in the way.
Larry OKC 05-31-2010, 09:17 PM I think OKC has vitality, but if you can't prove it in a picture, how can you prove that it's there?
Can always pull a SandRidge
Spartan 05-31-2010, 09:45 PM Hahaha. Speaking of pulling a SandRidge...
People just get in the way.
so1rfan 06-02-2010, 01:30 PM The photowalk signup is now full, maybe someone will lead another in a different area.
lasomeday 06-02-2010, 03:24 PM I took a few pictures with my camera phone of the Devon site today. You can go to the top of the new garage. I think that we should do a parking garage tour this time and just go parking garage to parking garage getting aerial views of the city, or maybe we can get on a few rooftops of some of the buildings to take pictures.
Also I think a few districts would be fun to take pictures of Stockyard City, Paseo, Capitol Hill (for Southside Spartan), Plaza, and maybe a few neighborhoods? It would be more of a driving tour with stops, but it would be great to see the different areas.
Spartan 06-02-2010, 05:52 PM Yes I think it would be very cool to do a southside photo walk! I'll bring my camera that doubles as a glock. Too bad the Grill on the Hill is no longer open. I also think a parking garage tour would be really awesome too. That's what we should do if some more people are down for it.
metro 06-03-2010, 09:03 AM When did the Grill on the Hill close?
Spartan 06-03-2010, 10:11 AM Wasn't open when I wanted chicken fried steak.
flintysooner 06-03-2010, 10:38 AM Grill on the Hill is open - Thursday special is the catfish.
Spartan 06-03-2010, 11:01 AM Well I tried going there for dinner twice last week and they were closed. It was like 6-7-8ish each time, so there was no reason for them to be closed. I they're open, that's awesome..I'll give it another try.
Larry OKC 06-04-2010, 01:47 AM Off topic but I can't remember what thread it was in...just saw a commercial for Lorec Ranch today and they are having a 30% off sale...only location given was on Reno (between Portland & Meridian??) So Spartan was right that the 1-35 location had closed.
gen70 06-04-2010, 02:39 AM Yes I think it would be very cool to do a southside photo walk! I'll bring my camera that doubles as a glock. Too bad the Grill on the Hill is no longer open. I also think a parking garage tour would be really awesome too. That's what we should do if some more people are down for it. Don't be scared Spartan. (people are people just like downtown)
flintysooner 06-04-2010, 06:50 AM Well I tried going there for dinner twice last week and they were closed. It was like 6-7-8ish each time, so there was no reason for them to be closed. I they're open, that's awesome..I'll give it another try.Mon - Thurs: 6:30am - 3pm; Fri: 6:30am - 8pm.
