gen70 05-02-2010, 06:23 PM Does anyone remember the Gaslight Dinner Theater at NW 122nd and May ? I had a friend in High School that worked their and I remember he almost cut his finger off in the kitchen & used the settlement money to buy a set of Crager mags for his 72 Chevelle, But asside from that it was a pretty cool Restaurant , I treated a few dates to that place . I remember the place but, never went in.

Didn't they put on plays there?
gen70 05-02-2010, 06:54 PM Didn't they put on plays there? Yeah, that's why I never went.
TheOldDays 05-12-2010, 09:47 PM Ok ..this is going to be a shot in the dark ...
I was sitting in my living room watching cops tonight ..in a little home somewhere in texas ..when I had a sudden flashback of a restaurant on classen blvd.
But I can't remember the name....
Here's the best I can describe where it was and what it looked like.
The year ..somewhere in the early 80's.
If you were on nw expressway ..and you pass penn square on your left ...and keep driving ..until you hit Classen ...then turn right on Classen so that you are heading south ......I'm not sure how far down it was .....but I would say within a mile after turning on Classen
I believe the restaurant had to do with hot dogs? or pizza? ....which also could have been part of the name.
It had blue or purple neon lights on the building or in the windows. And I believe it had some arcade games inside.
Thats all I can remember.
Anyone remember that??
*fingers crossed*

I can't think of a better thing to do with settlement money after you nearly dismembered your body. lol

That must have been way back in late 80's. Honestly, I don't remember
such a place on N. Classen between 10th and N.W. Expressway. I sounds
like you're describing the inside of the Blue Goose, but it didn't have food,
and thank goodness!
Here are the restaurants and drive-ins I remember from the 60's and 70's.
There may have been others, but there wasn't much room.
Sambo's
Some deli on 36th, N.E. corner.
Quick's
Candy Cane or stick
Village Pancake House
Dub's BBQ
Baker's Pharmacy
Herman's
Pizza Hut
Big Beef BBQ

gen70 05-14-2010, 01:18 PM Anybody remember the name of the drive-in burger joint that was east of the Redskin Theater on same side of street? I'am thinking it was Pixie's or something close to that.

Was it next door to the Redskin Bar??
sam greenroyd 05-14-2010, 01:53 PM Was it next door to the Redskin Bar??
I thought it was just west of the bowling alley pretty much same parking lot
Prunepicker 05-14-2010, 02:10 PM Fuzzy's?
Yes! How could I forget that one.
I'm still stumped about the place theolddays is writing about.

Where on 36th was the Deli?
I remember Big Beef BBQ, but not where it was.
How about the Sugar Shak on Classen, or am I thinking of the Candy Stick? Anyway, there was a Sugar Shak somewhere. We were banned from whichever drive-in I'm thinking of for shooting that good flaked ice at each other through straws.
Or the soda fountains and lunch counters at Rexall Drug Stores at NW 36th & Western, NW 30th & Classen, NW 34th and Classen, Kresge's downtown?
When bussing for integration began in 1968, we'd meet the bus at its first stop on the way to NEHS, Rexall at 30th & Classen. We'd go to the grill and order a Honey Bun fried in butter and a glass of milk for 50 cents. Mmmmm!

Thank you papa, I thought you might remember. I also remember they had those little plastic animals they put on the rim of the drinks. And the sign was pretty cool too.

Sugar (formerly Bixler's) Shak was on 23rd and Penn...North side of the street....
bluedogok 05-14-2010, 07:27 PM Where on 36th was the Deli?

Big Beef was right where NW Expressway ended at Classen, the building is still there (or at least it was when we were up there at Christmas) and it is a gray color now.
Speaking of old restaurants, evidently Sirloin Stockade is making a comeback of sorts. We stopped at the one in Round Rock once, not at all what they once where, now it is another Golden Corral type place.

Then the one on Classen I was banned from must have been the Candy Stick.
Prunepicker 05-14-2010, 09:38 PM Then the one on Classen I was banned from must have been the Candy Stick.
The Candy Stick, or Cane, drive-in was near N.W. 28th and N. Classen and on
the east side.
skyrick 05-14-2010, 09:57 PM That's the one.
ljbab728 05-14-2010, 11:43 PM I had forgotten about that little bar until it was brought up.
I used to walk from the bowling alley to the movie theater at night when my parents were bowling. It always scared me to walk by the bar for some reason. I never saw anything bad but it did.
skyrick 06-15-2010, 08:00 PM For some reason, today I remembered a small restaurant or cafe on the east side of Classen, right in front of the park behind the Milk Bottle. The restaurant was the south end of a strip center that was just north of the Milk Bottle. All I can remember is it had the best breaded fish and homemade tartar sauce and cole slaw. This would have been '68-'72.
Anyone?

Could that have been Patrick's? That's not exactly where it was, though. Herman's was at 16th and Classen.

No, this place was definitely on Classen, and north of 23rd.
In the late 1950's or early 1960's, wasn't there a cafeteria at the NW corner of 23rd and Classen? Was it perhaps Lady Classen which then relocated to May Ave?

1st thing I remember on that corner, early-mid '60s, is the Carnation Ice Cream store, after that The Beef & Bun.

Skyrick, that was 23rd and Western. Records, Inc. was on the NW corner of 23rd and Classen, but there may have been a cafeteria there before. Can't remember for sure.

You're right. I read Classen but thought Western. Records Inc was on the NE corner of 23 & Classen, not NW. It became the Jeanery after that I think. NW corner is where Rainbow Records is now, can't remember what was there before Rainbow.
bluedogok 06-17-2010, 08:51 PM The NE corner of 23 & Classen had the Soul Boutique for a long time.

The Classen Cafeteria was at N.W. 23rd and N. Classen. The Geist family
owned it and the Lady Classen.

Record's Incorporated was on the north end of the shopping center. The
Classen Cafeteria was on the south end. I think there was a business that
rented the space after the cafeteria but before the Jeanery, but I'm not sure.
Anderson's Antiques was on the N.W. corner of N.W. 23rd and N. Classen for
a long time.

As a matter of fact there's a sign stuck in the side walk, on the N.W. corner,
that's painted over. It used to say Anderson's Antiques Parking Only. It's
bent because it's been hit a few times.
papaOU 06-24-2010, 03:47 PM I was in Wheeler's Meat Market today and noticed that they carry "Herman's Original Slaw." Made in Oklahoma.

In the early 70's Nick's was a Friday ritual. Absolutely wonderful.

Prunepicker 07-28-2010, 09:00 PM Nick's meatball sandwiches!
I heard those were great. I'm a pastrami and provolone fan.
Whatever they put on that sandwich, deli mustard, mayo, etc...
was absolutely incredible.
corpsman 07-29-2010, 06:33 PM Nick's meatball sandwiches!
They were better than"to die for; they were to kill for in my opinion. True story........State Fair week 1972, fell and sat on my heel. Turned my foot nearly upside down and around backward. I was recovering at home after being released from the hospital, and on OU/Texas Saturday my ex's sister and her husband came by and said they were going to Nick's for subs. I asked for a meatball sub and from the moment I bit into it I was a solid Nick's fan. Never bought a sandwich there but what it wasn't super, didn't matter what kind it was. Never got sold on Nick's Earth Shoes, though.

Try La Baguette. They more than likely will have them before anyone. I do not care for olives unless they have been soaked in gin. Not a sandwich for me.

Thanks, I've been there years ago but never checked..
I wonder if I could get the sandwich with the Gin on the side with 2 olives? As far as the Vermouth goes - I likes um' DRY -just stare at the Vermouth bottle while pouring the Gin!! LOL
Bigrayok 08-03-2010, 03:55 PM I actually like Jason's Deli's Muffalettas. Schlotsky's sandwiches were inspired by the muffaletta's at Central Grocery in New Orleans which claim to have created them. Schlotsky's bread is different than most muffaletta's but the sandwich was inspired by the original. I do not know of many local sandwich shops that sell them. I need to try the ones at La Baguette.

Called La Baguette and they said they didn't make them. Called McAlister's Deli and they make the huge one's. Going to try them all!!!

papaOU 08-04-2010, 11:07 PM La Baguette has them listed on their web page. They have a store on N. May and one in Norman. Thin there is another one as well. Not that it will make any difference. Main street in Norman.
Muffaletta
Ham, salami, mortadella, swiss & provolone cheese, with lettuce and spicy muffaletta dressing.
Available by the slice, or in 12" round (serves 10-12 people).
CarltonsKeeper 08-05-2010, 08:44 AM I called La Baguette a couple of days ago and the "Kid" that answered the phone said they only made them for 35 people or more!! That doesn't make a whole lot of sense nor do I believe it. I think you and their advertised menu would be closer to right. Best thing is to drop in and find out myself. Thanks for looking!!

I just called La Baguette on N. May and the muffaletta is on
