I had a business at 24th and Robinson are you talking about the se corner of 24 and Rob? How long ago?

That's the place..

I know it was around in the 1960's and early '70's

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's the place....when I was in highschool, there was a Muffler/mechanics shop there. The guy was as good as V&H but not as expensive....

Was the muffler shop on the south west corner?

I know there was a auto shop there. We would go there and by decals for our bikes......

My shop was on the SW corner and it was the muffler shop. The cafe across the street change hands many times while i was there and got pretty nasty. I think it went hispanic like about everything else did down there.

That's the place. They had a couple of other places as well. That Rob location was open in 1973 because they bought an ad in our yearbook.

We would come to the muffler shop and get those "racy" women decals..

I moved into that location in 78, I never did any business with Randalls but allways heard good things. (I didn't do any "racy" women decals though)LOL

But never been called a "silkie" before. To us those were kids from NW Classen. JM had an FFA and too many kids from Britton and The Village. Yes, I went to Nichols Hills Elementary but I sure didn't live in Nichols Hills!

Not very PC of you to just lump me in with a group on account of my origins, rotfl, but I suppose it's to be expected from a "southsider" ;P

When I was growing up in the fifties, Garland's was considered the nicest restaurant on the Southside with McHenry's being number 2 and Jack's Steak house was right behind them.. I got to eat at Garland's twice and didn't start going to McHenry's til' I was married and had kids!!!

Don't remember how 4 married men got to go stag, but we did and had one of the best of times. Paid for it the next day. Last day open was a sunday. :tiphat:

Seriously though, I am surprised that I have no recall of the owners name. I just KNEW I would remember it upon being told. As smoked as I was, I feel good that I at least remembered WHERE it was.

The diner wasn't exactly on the corner, it was a bit east. There was an old welding shop on the corner that burned in the mid 70s. The welding shop had a sign out front that said "Kid's toys welded free".

Well, USG, I would have agreed, but I had no idea until I looked this up where the Blue Door is, lol. Going to post the clipping I found again.

As far as Garland's, all I've ever heard of was that there was a Garland's Drive-In on NW 22nd and Broadway before El Charrito was there, but I just saw that on an old post card. Anyone know If Elmer and Elsie and the kids are still standing by the old Borden's pace near there?http://www.snapdrive.net/files/531840/blackbrick1271961.jpg

I paid for access to archives of a certain news publication and found it in an article from Jan 1961 about the Beatnik scene in OKC.

Never knew about the Gourd or the Buddhi (9th& N Broadway, where exactly?), but if you google Buddhi Oklahoma City you get a lot of hits about Mason Williams, etc.

Isn't that just like the internet...never-ending, you find an answer and get 20 more questions...

USG '60
05-01-2010, 03:38 PM
What does it cost to get access to the archives?

I was at the Ghord and the Buddhi often. Saw early Judy Collins, Judy Hinski (Sp?), Josh White, the Limelighter and many others at them. Oh, AND Steve Brainard. First time I saw Mason he was sitting on a curb in front of Uptown Gallery across the street east of OCU. He was picking something out on his guitar. When I saw him later at the Buddhi, I recognized him as the street player. All "beatnic" places had candles in those bulbous wine bottles that had little baskets on them. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the stuff. Do any of you other old beatnics have your memories intact enough to remember?

Opps, just realized I'm getting off topic, but I would appreciate an answer before I get kicked out of the room.

Archives? Well, just for example, the archives for our dear morning paper at newsok dot com cost $8.95 for one day or $33 for one month and you can see every copy of the paper going back to 1903 or so. I would have had to search with like this, "black brick" ,to avoid getting every reference to the hotel black and ad for a brick house. Not that I would ever copy any of their copyrighted material and post it publicly, you understand ;)

I would have had to drink a lot of Chianti Villa Banfi before i would do that...

Well, I've tried. Teachers and students have free access but not everyone. At metrolibrary.org one can see some of the articles in the Oklahoman back to 1981 but no earlier. I just checked again, and, yes I can see my Dad'd obit in 2002, but it clearly says back to 1981. The library has some great access but free complete access for every cardholder to every copy of the Oklahoman isn't one of them, as far as I can tell. :)

Does anyone remember the Gaslight Dinner Theater at NW 122nd and May ? I had a friend in High School that worked their and I remember he almost cut his finger off in the kitchen & used the settlement money to buy a set of Crager mags for his 72 Chevelle, But asside from that it was a pretty cool Restaurant , I treated a few dates to that place .
