View Full Version : New to OKC - Restaurant Advice?
BigBadBen 04-08-2010, 07:13 PM Although I have lived in Oklahoma all my life and have spent a lot of time in OKC, I am looking for some advice on local restaurants.
I know all the big chains, and the local chains like Ted's & Chelinos.
I'm looking for some of the great hole in the wall places, local gems that aren't well publicized. Let me know your favorites!
Looking forward to your advice!

Tacoville-SW 29th and Portland, or SW 29th and Newcastle, right in there, in the little strip...hole in the wall, half taco shop half beer store, best burritos and tacos in town, at the best prices. same with the beer.

I love Big Eds. It would be worth it to make the drive. Their fries are fantastic.

Heck, just start reading a couple pages of this Food Forum and you'll get it down. Tip, you can also do a search in this food section and type in whatever (ie. "bbq" or "italian") and probably get a dozen or more reviews of those types of places.
soonerfangirl 04-09-2010, 09:38 AM The Wedge - Deep Deuce
Prairie Thunder - Midtown Plaza
Flatire Burgers - Edmond
Picasso - Paseo
foodiefan 04-09-2010, 10:08 AM Cous-cous. . . south of NW 63rd and May, west side of the street.
Taco trucks around 10th/May.
BigBadBen 04-09-2010, 11:02 AM Thanks for all the great advice!
We hit The Wedge last night, it was fantastic!
MsDarkstar 04-09-2010, 11:46 AM These are some of my personal favorites & they're all VERY inexpensive.
Oma's Pantry, 23rd & Council - great sandwiches, FANTASTIC pizza (not always available though, it's a random special). Friend them on Facebook, you'll see the daily specials...sandwich, chips & drink for less than $6. Oma's Pantry Deli Menu & Online Ordering (http://www.dcimports.com/ompacame.html)
ND Foods, Britton Rd, East of May (by Johnnie's) - nice deli counter, extensive family-style take home options (lasagnas, meatloaf, etc), great sandwiches and the baked goods are awesome.
Cafe Bela, SW 89th & Penn - coffee/bistro. The "Bellaroni" sandwich is my favorite. Cafe Bella - Espresso-Tea Bar & Bistro - Oklahoma City (http://www.cafebellabistro.com/)
Cajun King, NW 63rd & McArthur - buffet-style cajun/soul food. Definitely nothing to look at inside, but the food is good & the service is always outstanding.
Tacoville, SW 29th & Newcastle Rd - best tacos & burritos, ever.
Kolache Kitchen, NW Expressway (near Hideaway Pizza) - one of my favorite places for breakfast (bonus, it's near work!), their kolaches are so good. The ranchero is great, scrambled egg, cheese, sausage & jalapeno inside a pastry. OR go there at lunchtime & there's a guy making sushi. Weird as it sounds, the sushi is some of the best I've had in a while (and cheaper than places like Sushi Neko). Kolache Kitchen (http://www.kolachekitchenokc.com/)
BBQ Chop Shop, 78th & N. May - They've got the best pulled pork! Great desserts too. BBQ (http://www.bbqchopshop.com/)
I would also recommend checking out Urbanspoon online, you can read reviews of different places. If you've got an iPhone, get the urbanspoon app & use the randomizer. That's how I've found a lot of cool places that I'd never heard of before. Well, the urbanspoon app & okctalk!
soonerfangirl 04-09-2010, 12:05 PM Cajun King, NW 73rd & McArthur - buffet-style cajun/soul food. Definitely nothing to look at inside, but the food is good & the service is always outstanding.
I'm pretty sure it's at 63rd & MacArthur. We're going there for the first time tonight - based on the good reviews I read here.
potsy 04-09-2010, 12:10 PM check out Oklahoma City Restaurants | Local Restaurant Reviews (http://www.eataroundokc.com/)! Great resource for foodies in OKC.

So did I. The new location is rather stark and plain compared to the old place, but the food is still good.

Although there are numerous places they haven't gotten to yet, there are also lots of places you won't find reviews on elsewhere.
I really enjoy the effort that goes into the eataroundokc.com site
ImTheDude 04-12-2010, 10:55 AM Signature Grill in Edmond, there is not a better restaurant in the city, imo. Make sure you make a reservation.

My other favorite is Iron Starr, great food. Get the mac/cheese and greens as your sides.

We've been here over two years and been through that area numerous times and I never noticed it. Thanks for the heads up on this one. Will definitely check it out on our next Date Night.
Enjoying reading all the hole in the wall places.

Caboose 04-15-2010, 02:10 PM Be wary of the people pushing Tacoville. "Best Tacos and burritos".
It isn't that they arent good, it is that they are... well.. more like trucker food than authentic Mexican. If you want some delicious authentic mexican tacos and burritos, hit up Los Comales on SW 15th and Agnew.
I also wanted to echo how amazing Saturn Grill and Cafe Antigua are. If you want some awesome Thai food try Panang on SW 89th and Penn.
MsDarkstar 04-15-2010, 04:17 PM I would never claim that Tacoville is authentic Mexican food but that doesn't mean they don't make a good burrito. It may not be authentic or traditional, but it tastes good....to me, that's all that really matters.
BigBadBen 04-15-2010, 04:23 PM If you want some awesome Thai food try Panang on SW 89th and Penn.
I've eaten there a couple times with co-workers.
3 words: Evil Chicken Curry!!!!!!

I know, I am not saying its not good.. I am just saying it isn't a real Mexican burrito. It is a trucker burrito, for lack of better term... and that is fine. It is a good one. I am just waiting to make sure the original poster in the thread has the right expectations.
SOUTHSIDE GIRL 04-16-2010, 03:58 PM Big Ed's is WELL alive and still serving AWESOME burgers!!
Grill on the Hill best burgers. SW 25th and Hudson. Belive the address is 325 SW 25. Open 7:00 to 3:00 Monday thru Thurs Friday open until 8:00pm

I think i've posted this on the Best Burger thread but Anns Chicken Fry has an AMAZING burger!
G.Walker 04-17-2010, 03:19 AM The best burgers in town are at Nic's Diner, on NW 16 and Penn, just a little hole in the wall, old school diner, you can only fit about 12 people in there, but the burgers are worth the wait, and makes up for it. The burgers are so big, you have to eat with a fork, you can't even pick it up, and I am not exaggerating.
Jon27 04-17-2010, 01:50 PM Belle Isle Restaurant! It's in the first floor of 50 Penn Place on Penn and NW Expressway. This is my wife and I's favorite restaurant.
