Agreed. sorry, alot of people like Freebird but, not me.
The ending of Freebird, if you want to call half the song an ending, is a
garage band chord progression that got recorded and made millions of $$$.
I wish I would have done it.

I was unaware of that fact.

With Reggie Workman on Bass and Keith Jarrett on piano. I don't remember
the sax player at the moment. A passed friend of mine played with the
Messengers later in the 60's but he didn't record with them.

Great list of artists, LD - how about the songs that they sing that you could listen to for the rest of your life?

Obviously the Boxer - S & G - i would go into why but do i need to?
For Judy C - it's "Song for Martin" - here's why -

As a kid my band played the Teen Club in Fort Sill routinely.

During the breaks i'd go out back to get some fresh air - they had cement block walls enclosing the place topped with razor wire - really made ya proud to be in the land of the free and the home of the brave ... Anyway, there was this troubled teen (imagine that!) out there by herself - she was kinda overweight and not too pretty. Since it was just the two of us out there we started up a conversation - we kinda hit it off and so every break - out i'd go. Next time we played there - look forward to seeing her - became a routine.

One time we go to play there - and no Candy. Asked around only to find she'd committed suicide. Her last name was Westmoreland - her daddy was a general - ring a bell? We had some really deep conversations about war and a lot of stuff.

Judy's song resonates my feelings about losing someone to suicide.

************************************************** ****
Words and Music by Judy Collins
Universal Music Corp. (ASCAP)/ Rocky Mountain National Park Music, Inc.

In Rough Rock, Arizona he lived for many years alone
A gangly kid from Colorada, who could sing the sweetest songs
I first heard Woody's songs from him in a cabin in the snow
Seems like it was yesterday but it was years and years ago

He moved to Arizona in nineteen sixty-one
Got a job at the Indian school - he was livin' in the sun
My life was movin' fast by now, I was always on the run
My country life was far behind and the circus had begun

Marty, I know it got lonely out there
Coyotes cryin' at midnight in the cold desert air
The heart that sorrow broke in you can never be repaired
Mart, I know I let you down somewhere

I knew that me and Marty, we should have been good friends
I always knew the paths we walked were meant to cross again
We talked on the telephone once or twice a year
His voice was so familiar, his memory was clear

I'll never know what brought him to where he finally stood
A shotgun pointed at his head in a cabin in the woods
But somehow I could hear it, it struck my heart as well
For the unknown man who needs a hand
For the friend I'll never know

Marty, I know it got lonely out there
Coyotes cryin' at midnight in the cold desert air
The heart that sorrow broke in you can never be repaired
Mart, I know I let you down somewhere

RealJimbo got my first picks for Steely Dan & Tull - so i'll change mine to Bodhisattva & Wind-Up - definitely second choice but good enough...

Yes - SouthSide of the Sky - i'm a southsider and proud of it - "were we ever colder on that day - a million miles away - it seemed from all of eternity"

okay - five down - five to go -

C King - Beautiful
Joni M - Woodstock - she summed up what being a hippie meant to me...
ZZ Top - Just Got Paid
Moody Blues - Question
Nilsson - Jump Into the Fire

The left behinds of a great society - those *not* in the first 100 or so other *great* songs y'all already listed...

Back in the daze when I was a plum, 50's & 60's I didn't care what the
music was. If I liked it, then I liked it. Tutti Frutti, Battle of New Orleans,
Purple People Eater, Johnny Staccato, D-I-V-O-R-C-E, I Wanna Hold Your
Hand, I Feel Good, etc...

THEN...
I started liking minor sounding music. Paint It Black, Dirty Water, Hot Time
Summer in the City, White Rabbit, Norwegian Wood, Sock it to Me...

THEN...
came Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, late Beatles, Motown...

THEN...
Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, and virtually every group that wasn't on the
top 40.

THEN...
Classical, classical and jazz, jazz and classical, jazz...

NOW...
that I'm a prune I don't care what the music is. If I like it, I like it. I
especially like it if it pays.

A lot about nothing: You mentioned Hello Walls by Willie Nelson!! You probably already know he wrote this song but Faron Young made it a hit!! I was watching a cable channel yrs ago before Faron Young committed suicide and in his interview he said Willie was broke and wrote this song and offered it to him for $20.00!! They were good friends and Faron told him it would be a big hit etc. etc. and gave him $50.00 for it!! Just thought I would pass that on.....Why? I don't know...LOL

I see lots of Leon Russell and Elton John on these lists. Hold on to your hats, folks! A possibly amazing record is in the works, Leon, Elton, Bernie, and T-Bone working together. I hope it happens...one never knows about these things.

12.31.09
New Album Update
Bernie and Elton will return to the studio in mid-January to record a collaborative album with the iconic Leon Russell. Russell, who has always been one of Elton’s musical heroes and influences when it comes to piano styling, will be featured on a 50/50 basis - writing and performing his own material for the project, as well as writing with both Bernie and Elton, and performing and singing on the pair's own songs.

A marathon writing session in Los Angeles last November saw the trio pen a vast wealth of material that ranges far and wide and covers many musical genres.

The sessions will be overseen and produced by Henry (T-Bone) Burnett whose work on roots-based records over the last several years have turned this multi-Grammy winning musician and producer into the go-to-guy for unique projects.

We advise all not familiar with Leon or T-Bone to Google and learn more about these extraordinary individuals.

Don’t forget to keep checking for new postings by Bernie on his blog as we’re hoping he’ll be reporting some of his own personal feelings on this exciting new chapter in his storied career.

That was the original question, that has been ignored.
If you had a make a CD of TEN (and only TEN) rock/pop songs
that you would listen to for the rest of your life, what would they
be? It's harder that you think.
I had a hard time with it.

As far as redemption goes try My316.com - Take it personally (http://www.my316.com/)
