I learned yesterday that the lady who was my first date passed away in a tragic automobile accident. Thinking about her brought back some pretty good memories. Not because the first date amounted to much, it was her dad taking us to a movie downtown, around the corner from Veazey's. After the movie we went to Veazey's for a malt and to call her dad to come get us.

The lady who was my first date was a really nice person, very intelligent, had a great personality. Our politics were at opposite poles in recent years but I never lost a fondness for those memories.

Our date was in about 1961. When was your first date? Where did you go, what did you do?

Gosh, I'm sorry about your friend, RealJimbo. It is bad enough when someone passes from illness at a certain age but a carwreck is not what you expect.

I'm trying to remember my first date, at fifteen, which shouldn't be hard since I got married within a year and there weren't many.

It was to a dance in highschool. I had the pretty dress on (it was dark is all I remember) and my mom drove us. We picked up my date and mom dropped us off at a nice restaurant - can't remember which one but it was on 23rd, near Western, north side of the street. It isn't there, anymore. My date gave me a wrist corsage which was perfect, and later, mom picked us up and we went to the dance. Mom drove. It was fun, no pressure and although not terribly exciting, that made entering the dating pool lowkey and less stressful. Seems like we went out primarily because our older siblings ran around together and they thought it would be oh so cool if Penny and so and so (a younger brother) got together.

I can't remember why my mom drove. He and I really would have liked to have been nuts about each other but the fire never sparked. He didn't talk much. I probably made up for it.

Good one:......can't wait to hear Pennyquilts story (Love ya girl). First real date spring of 1960:.....Went to Springlake (Barbara Faulkner) cute girl don't know how I was with her....Her parents took us and picked us up. got the Fatherly talk before we left....Something about losing parts of my body and all that.....Convinced her for a "Kiss"....sheesh.... by the little lake at Springlake. But, like Jimbo's scenario Barbara was killed in a car accident on her way to Stillwater the summer after our Graduation....Nice person....way too tragic of an ending

Whoa! When I first started reading PQ's entry, I thought it was 64...got that squared away really quick! The wrist corsage just isn't anything I could envision on ol' 64.

I wonder what first dates are like nowadays. My kids are grown and married, so someone enlighten me.

I don't think I would have the Nerve to go on a first date now....I was thinking about this and you know, I think I had $7.00 on the first date....Let's see,
2 1/2 gallons of Gas...then what?????

My dates were different. Usually it involved meeting someone somewhere. Like the Lion's Center dances on Friday night. Never had my or her folks drive us somewhere.

I don't remember my first date, it was probably more of a hook up type thing. I do remember my first formal date was the jr. prom.

You'd be forced to sit around and smooch. If I had to date {{{shudder!!}}}, I would just stay home.

The sitting and Smooching sounds like a pretty good deal....(Now).......I just remembered my Oldest Grandson will probably attend his first Prom this Spring...Wonder where that Money is coming from????Hmmmmm....I remember the first formal dance I went to it cost ME...about $40.00 that was the White Sport Coat, Corsage, meal and everything.....I was more worried about getting the $1.00 shine on my shoes messed up than anything else....Priorities change with age I think....My shoes stayed Shiny though...

Sorry to hear about that RealJimbo.

My sophomore year up in Missouri. Her and her dad picked me up and we drove down to Kansas City to go to a coin show. Lol, talk about a good time. I was actually in to coins and bought two for a total of $25. I still have the coins. I don't have her...:ohno:

A later date...not my first date by any means...really funny, actually...I went to pick her up and her dad and brother had to hold the two rottweilers in the yard. We went out to eat and she wore flowers in her hair (in the '60s, remember). We went to see Georgie Girl at the May theater. I didn't understand that movie at all and I was really self-conscious with her sitting there next to me with flowers in her hair. And her dress (a dress, at a movie? yep!) was strapless, which made me nervous too. All in all, not a great date and there wasn't a second one.

Same here. Prunette HAS to live longer than me.

I never went to a formal dance or a prom. Couldn't stand the thought of all
that unauthorized touching. Ick. I'd hang out at the Sock Hops just to hear
the bands and be a wallflower. Had many friends who were girls and we'd
just hang out. No dancing, though.

All that talk of dancing reminds me of a girl I dated back around 1969. Her name was Norma and she and her sister, Brenda loved to dance. There was a place at the time in Midwest City that was just for dancing and we went there often. I remember Sam Hankins and the Ho-Dads (Hodads?), Dwayne and the Belldettas, etc. playing those dances.

Anyway, one night we went and my date wore a navy blue pants suit. Remember when they called them pants suits so women could wear pants to work in offices? She looked great and when we walked into the dance hall everything was fine until they turned the lights down and the black lights on. She looked like she was wearing nothing but her white bra and panties!!! We were dancing away and her sister came running across the room like a linebacker and dragged her out the door so fast it made my head spin. I can still see the scene in my head. It is so funny now, but really shocking at the time.

Was the place in MWC north of 29th on Airdepot? Sat on the west side of Airdepot? Can't remember exact location but it was not far north of 29th. Remember the name?

That is absolutely hysterical!! She had a good sister. I bet they laughed about that, for years - well, maybe a few years had to pass before your date thought it was funny...

Yeah, that's the place! I could NEVER dance a lick, but I'd do move around and watch the ones who could dance. The girl I was dating 'bout drove me crazy, but I luckily escaped without it getting too serious.

Nobody loves the story more than I. And I didn't have to exaggerate at all. I even forgot this time to say that it looked like she was wearing nothing but white LACE bra and panties. Ooo La La!!

That must have been a sight to behold! My first date was in 1962, I think. It was to one of the junior high school graduation dances in Enid. I was in between the 7th and eighth grades (and we think they start too young now). Semi-formal affair chaperoned by moms of some of the girls. Well lit so that the ninth graders couldn't make out. Bought the requisite corsage, had Mom to take me to my date's house and the proceeded to trip on the steps going to her front door and like to have tore the knee out of my Sunday suit pants. Luckily, the corsage flew out of my hand and landed unscathed on her porch. I couldn't dance a lick either but had a good time swaying side to side and occasionally moving my feet. The last I knew she was teaching high school English in Broken Arrow.
