This is interesting. Looking around on the map in S.E. Okla, I found Belzoni. There is nothing there but a cemetery. I have family on both sides buried there. Williams & Flemings

Pete,
This is great. The Pickers have family from Oklahoma and some of the towns
are gone, except for the cemetery. Just like Tall Girl said.

I have not read the book (Abandoned Oklahoma) but, my uncle bought a piece of land down by Berwyn (Gene Autry) a few years back and, on one end there was a "Black" cemetery that the previous owner wouldn't let anyone near. Well, my Uncle's first job at hand was to have his men clean up the cemetery and open the road where people could go in there if they wanted....this place is mega old. He is now a "Hero" and the cemetery is now being used again and has not been abandoned in Oklahoma......His men Fenced around the Cemetery so that the cattle wouldn't get in on the Graves and the people of the community now keep it up real nice.....there was one marker that just had a first name.....no date, nothing....kinda strange...

Those type cemeteries are all over the state. If you look around an old country school there will be one near there. Clematis (don't know about spelling) is a large cemetery in Lincoln County. It's still accessible to visit but no new burials are allowed. It's on a guys property and he has cattle on it.

The guy probably owns the property but it's a true shame that cemetery land of old is neglected.....I don't mean manicured like Resthaven but the old Graves probably don't have any Relatives left.....I know there's one in Wilson, Oklahoma...(taken care of however) that my Great Grandfather is buried in and his headstore is a bag of Sakrete with his name and date put in with a stick. My Great-Great--Great aunt is buried there also....She was tough and onery...Carried a pistol til she died....

I know this thread wasn't started to discuss cemeteries in particular, but a several members of my mother's family, including my grandparents and 4 uncles and aunts, are buried in a cemetery called Odessa in southwestern Oklahoma between Gotebo and Hobart. I know it's a bit morbid to some, but I love cemeteries - especially older ones. They are so personal and beautiful in a haunting (no pun intended) way. Odessa is in the middle of nowhere-almost looks like it was initially started when someone on a wagon train died and they buried them there. It is a small cemetery with a white picket fence around it. There is a small school or chapel adjacent to it that it long since abandoned. I would say that there are no new plots available, and there are only about 100 people there. I've always said I wanted to be buried there someday, but now it looks like Sunnylane will be my final resting place.

Sorry, now :backtotop

Sorry, now :backtotopI too enjoy old cemeteries and I don't think that it is morbid. Alot of history can be learned there. I have visited cemetaries across the U.S.. In the N,E. in NY. NJ. PA. and further N. are some very old history to be learned. Now, Gotebo is really in the middle of no where (which I have been to) but, the Odessa site I have never heard of. I'll have to goggle that and see what I can find. Sunnylane is good I guess. Doesn't matter to me where my remains may end up. I would like to be creamated and shot into space like Tim Leary...Yeah...

Kinda like a Clingon funeral, huh? Except they just shot the unembalmed body into space in a "casket capsule"! :-) My only requirement is that the cemetery be predominantly headstones. I HATE the ones (like Resthaven) that ONLY have flat markers. So impersonal. Just looks like a field.:ohno:

I moved 5 yrs ago from Brookfield Drive after 15 yrs which is 2 blocks north of the cemetery. My kids were teenagers when we moved there and they found that place in a hurry!! They would take their friends over there to try and scare them. It is a very odd location....

Since this is tending heavy towards the cemetery side I have a question that's puzzled me for a while. Newcastle...it seems to be a town or city without a cemetery. Is, or was, there one? Does anyone know? I mean, Newcastle's been around for years.

By the way, Red Ridge Estate does indeed look like a treasure.

Was the house not an art museum for a number years?

It was one of those places you could see from the road, but have no idea as to how to get there.

There were exhibits promoted in the Sunday Oklahoman.

Where is the Norman (as in Normandy) castle in that area that Richard and Dixie Galloway owned years ago. I used to go to it 25 years ago but then tried to find it awhile back to show a friend and it was like it disappeared. Can't spot it on google maps either.

Located in an actual castle in the middle of Norman, Oklahoma, the Hidden Castle (formerly Buzz's Subs & the Blue Onion) is the best venue in town. We were featured as one of Billboard's Top 50 Venues in the United States a few years back and we've only gotten better.

The drinks are cheap and plentiful here! The Hidden Castle has the cheapest deal on domestic and import beers. Come enjoy a night out for half the price of the other guys in town.

The music at the Castle is our biggest draw - with at least twice the capacity of most venues in the Oklahoma City metro, the heaviest sound system, the craziest light and laser show, and the best stage, it's no wonder the more and more artists are calling the Hidden Castle home. Bandwagon Blues Night is the last Friday of every month and showcases the talents of the coolest blues acts in town. Come see the 1st Annual Bandwagon Blues Festival on July 31st, 2010, featuring Ike Lamb & the Creepers, Miss Blues, Sour Milk Babies, the Stinnett Brothers, Iddy Bitty, Sunshine Hahn, and more!

And with .50c pool tables and weekly pool tournaments, we're THE scene for billiards in Norman! Come out for 9 Ball Tuesdays and 8 Ball Wednesdays and make some fast cash on one of our professional tables!

Need a place to display your art? Look no further - the Hidden Castle is your art gallery! Our walls showcase some of the best up-and-coming artists from Oklahoma. Whether you're looking to host an active showcase party or would rather leave some art up to get your name out, we've got the clientele to get your work seen!

Speaking of art, the Hidden Castle is the number one place for film in Norman! In 2010, we're the home of the Reel Renegades Film Festival, featuring some of the best independent horror films! Come see Incest Death Squad, Sewer Chewer, Slime City Massacre, THEM, & more on June 4th and 5th, 2010! Know a filmmaker, some actors, or artists? Have them contact us to get in on the next festival!

Hungry for more? The Hidden Castle can feed your late night need! We've got the tastiest onion burgers & hotdogs in town! Try the Ugly Dog - a sizzlin' hotdog, deep fried to perfection! If you crave onion rings, chili cheese fries, irish nachos, or just want a jumbo Coke, we've got your fix!

As the name implies, the Hidden Castle is Norman's best kept secret! Our physical (and mailing) address is:

The Hidden Castle 1309 SW 24th Ave Norman, OK 73071

You can find us off the corner of Lindsey & 24th Ave, right off I-35! Take a peek behind Del Rancho and see what you've been missing!

If you live in Norman and haven't been under a rock the last 20 years, you'll find us as the guys responsible for the Quarter House, Hole in the Wall, Buzz's Subs, and half a dozen venues/hangouts in Oklahoma. This crew loves good food, great art, live music, and spreading the good news about the Oklahoma music scene.

In a band? Have some art? Wanna show your film? No problem! Call the Castle at (405) 701-0870.

On the site it says abandoned in 1990, I know that it wasn't. John Hoke ran his car brokering business and Amateur Wrestling News out of there after he left the building at 8th & Broadway that the Salyer's own. In the late 90's I met the guy at Silverhorn who built the barn that used to be visible from Lincoln for hydroponic farming and he was living in the house at that time. Does anyone know if it is still for sale? I know the Google Streetview has a for sale sign in the picture.

No Thunder, wrong one. Dixie told me that some filthy rich dude back in the 20s or 30s bought a Norman castle in England and had it disassembled and put back together in the hills in what was then NE of the city, and it SEEMS like it was east off of Kelley in the 50 something hundred block, but I couldn't seem to find it in the flesh or on Google Maps. It was used as the Symphony's Showhouse back in the late 70s.
