View Full Version : Another reason why OKC needs a mid-size venue
April 27th at the Brady Theater: Jeff Beck
that says it all. we really need a venue that an artist such as Beck would play. the show is on a tuesday night and no one i know would be interested in seeing Beck (their loss!). i don't really want to make the drive to tulsa on a weeknight by myself, so i'm skipping it. there have been a few artists there in the last couple of years i would have liked to have seen, but have passed on since they were in tulsa.
OkieHornet 03-05-2010, 11:14 AM isn't our civic center close to the same capacity as the brady? maybe brady is a few hundred more... but yeah, i get what you're saying... civic center is definitely not a place for a lot of rock bands... more of a philharmonic/ballet/theater type of place...

The Civic Center hosts a few very good concerts, but the "feel" just doesn't do it for me, OKC definitely needs a smaller venue that can host weekly live shows.
If you like Blues, Joe Bonamassa plays at the Civic Center sometime later this month, check him out if you can.
gen70 03-05-2010, 11:38 AM I attended many concerts at the Civic Center in the late 60's thru the 70's and I thought that it was a great venue. I thought that it was a mid-sized venue.
Bigrayok 03-05-2010, 12:06 PM I have noticed since the Civic Center was remodled as part of the MAPS renovations it has hosted much fewer rock conerts than it did previously. After the renovation it seats fewer people than it did before, something like 2800 down from 3200 or so. A few years ago the Will Rodgers Theater was used as a small to midsized concert venue but have not noticed any concerts there lately. The Transiberian-Orchestra is bringing their Bethoven's Last Night/Night Castle tour to the Civic Center in April. Maybe this is a sign of more conerts to come?

I know. I saw Johnny Winter, Frank Zappa, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck, Mountain, Jefferson Airplane and lots of others there.
mugofbeer 03-05-2010, 04:54 PM Denver added a 6000 seat theater to it's convention center and it has hosted many smaller concerts. Maybe this is something that can be done with the convention center?
RadioOKC 03-05-2010, 07:19 PM I totally agree. The Civic Center is really nice but I think probably priced of the ballpark by design for concerts.
Has anyone seen a show at Rose State? What is it like?? I see them do something every once in a while.
I went to school at San Diego State and we had several venues on campus including a awesome ampitheatre. Back in the day everyone from Dire Straits and Moody Blues to Bangles and Punk and alternative show we're on the menu weekly.

gen70 03-05-2010, 10:03 PM I know. I saw Johnny Winter, Frank Zappa, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck, Mountain, Jefferson Airplane and lots of others there. Then, we attended together. Good times..Good times.. Ever get some "screaming yellow zonkers" from the concession stand?

Yep. I remember one time at the Yellow Submarine, before the band started, the "bar"tender got on the mic and started reading the front, back and side panels of a box of Screaming Yellow Zonkers. Cracked the whole place up.
skyrick 03-05-2010, 10:23 PM Sounds like OKC needs something like Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie, TX, between Arlington and Dallas. The stage, walls, and seating can be configured from 1000 to 6000+ capacity.
TaoMaas 03-06-2010, 05:30 AM I know. I saw Johnny Winter, Frank Zappa, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck, Mountain, Jefferson Airplane and lots of others there.
I was at the Zappa, Beck, and Mountain concerts. We came SO close to seeing Johnny Winter, too. Our spanish class in high school used to come up to see "Man of La Mancha" every year. One year, we got snowed out and the Civic Center gave us a choice of things to see to make up for the cancelled show. We had our teacher 99% talked into taking us to see Johnny Winter before she figured out that he wasn't Jonathan Winters. LOL

Hey, Jonathan Winters would have been a good show too!
I remember the Jeff Beck concert as the absolute loudest assault on my eardrums ever! John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra opened up for him and my ears nearly bled! Civic Center was designed to amplify and project acoustic instruments; Mahavishnu & Beck, with their amps cranked to 11, were almost painful. I endured about 15-20 minutes of MO and then headed out to the lobby with about half of the rest of the audience. Beck was loud as hell, but it was Jeff Beck for God's sake, so I endured the mega-volume for his whole set.
Mountain was backed up by Black Oak Arkansas. My best friend and I went to that show the night before we hitch-hiked to California, December '71.
I went to the Zappa concert because I had tickets to see Focus, but they canceled due to low ticket sales. That show made me a Zappa fan for life.
gen70 03-06-2010, 09:34 AM I am hearing impaired from those concerts. Best concert I saw there was Jefferson Airplane.
Bunty 03-06-2010, 11:08 AM So Oklahoma City doesn't have a good sized private venue like the Tumbleweed in Stillwater? Last night Gretchen Wilson performed there before an almost packed crowd. And this summer ZZ Top will put on a concert there.
skyrick 03-06-2010, 03:50 PM I am hearing impaired from those concerts. Best concert I saw there was Jefferson Airplane.
That was a great one!
The concert I regret missing the most at Civic Center was Pink Floyd. Just a couple of weeks after the US release of Dark Side, they played the entire album with the CC wired for quadrophonic sound! I bought the album a couple of weeks after the concert and realized what I had missed!
gen70 03-06-2010, 04:04 PM skyrick, where was the Yellow Submarine?
mugofbeer 03-06-2010, 07:01 PM I don't know if I did this right or not, but this is an image of the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. This is the south face of the building and you will see a semi-circlular building to the right of the light rail track which is the 5,000 seat Wells Fargo Theater. It's used for meetings but also concerts. They had Steely Dan there a couple of months ago to great reviews.

Paseo, non-alcohol live music club with local bands like Marble Phrogg, Lincoln Harvey Market, etc.
gen70 03-06-2010, 09:48 PM Wow!! you jogged the memory with the band names. Do you remember the Prarie Lady? That was a cool place.

I used to live walking-distance from the Prairie Lady during it's heyday. I don't know if it's true or not, but I'd always heard that the folks who ran Prairie Lady took their proceeds and used them to restore the Zoo Amphitheatre and get it running again. Had anyone else ever heard that?

i saw Avett Brothers there last week. nice, basic theater, but it's small - maybe 1000 capacity?

That was on 39th Expressway, right? I saw Roger McGuinn, founder and lead guitar with the Byrds, there; also U2 on their very first US tour, "I Will Follow" was their underground hit at the time.

I didn't know Roger McGuinn and U2 played there. Sorry that I missed them. I'am wondering what the capacity was at the Lady? I do remember that it wasn't very big.

I'm thinking it was only a couple/few hundred.
How about adding a theater to the SE (or SW) corner of the Myriad once the convention center is built? Build it into the current structure, but have a cool architectural feature come 'out' from the building; a la the OmniDome -- but larger in scale...
Would be good for the acts going between the Nokia in Grand Prairie & Cain's, plus could be used for the Women of Faith/Get Motivated/etc type seminars, too.
td25er 03-08-2010, 09:26 AM What about the Zoo Amphitheatre, Frontier City, or State Fair Arena? Not in OKC, but you have Firelake, Riverwind, Lloyd Noble.
Stan Silliman 03-08-2010, 10:44 AM What about the Zoo Amphitheatre, Frontier City, or State Fair Arena? Not in OKC, but you have Firelake, Riverwind, Lloyd Noble.
Firelake and Riverwind are both in 1500-2000 range.
Bricktown Events Center? How big is that?
State Fair Arena is underused and should be getting more play.
citizenkane 03-08-2010, 01:29 PM What was the capacity of the Tower Theater when it was still in use?
kswright29 03-08-2010, 09:47 PM I would guess the Bricktown Events Center is probably around a couple of thousand capacity. There is no permanent seating and the floor is just flat so there is no rise to any temporary seating. I've been to a couple of shows there that don't have seats, just general admission, standing room only. It's certainly not the answer for having something comperable to Cain's.
rkjg24 03-13-2010, 07:25 AM I could go on a rant about Tulsa...ugh.

John - sounds like a good idea to me. I'm not sure it would ever get done just because of the Civic Center being downtown. It would be nice to have a venue of that size that is acoustically a winner that could bring in some acts like Elvis Costello that seems to frequent Cain's.

smooth 03-14-2010, 10:06 PM If the original poster was refering to sports arenas, Oklahoma City HAS a "mid sized venue."
James Norick arena-aprox 9,000 to 10,000 seats
Cox arena-aprox 13,000 seats
Ford Center-aprox 19,000 seats

The OP wasn't referring to sports arenas.

Then what kind of venue was it?
rcjunkie 03-15-2010, 09:19 AM Then what kind of venue was it?
Read all of the postings: Live Music Venues, places that are used primarily for live music, plays, etc;, not arenas that can be adapted for use.
edcrunk 05-10-2010, 12:24 AM What was the capacity of the Tower Theater when it was still in use?
we've been salivating over the tower as of late... we would love to move our wednesday night (ROBOTIC) there.
Ezrablum 05-10-2010, 04:55 AM I'd just like to say that I think it really stinks that we get a lot of rock bands into the Diamond Theater on Eastern, and that is one of the worst images of the metro to give somebody. There's nothing over there. If I had never been to OKC before and that area of town was my first impression after stepping off of a tour bus, I would be seriously underwhelmed. And the fact is Oklahoma City has so much more to offer than the dilapidated area over near Eastern and the soon-to-be-sepulcher of Crossroads Mall.
Then what kind of venue was it?
i was referring to something along the lines of the a music theater that seats 3,000-5,000 people. i guess it would be comparable to the brady theater, though i've never been there.

I mentioned this waaaaay earlier on this thread but I will repeat it since it is very similar to something OKC could do with the proposed new convention center. Denver's convention center has a separate 5-6,000 seat theater attached to it called the Wells Fargo Theater. It's a great place to see a small-ish concert and is less formal than, say, the Civic Center Music Hall.
