View Full Version : Why does edmond not have a movie theatre?
kwash 02-20-2010, 08:40 AM is it me or does edmond seem to have everything but a new free stasnding stadium seat movie theatre like everyone else. Norman/Moore area just got a brand new warren theatre a few years back and that place is awesome and super busy all the time. Yukon/Mustang area also just recently also got a brand new stadium seat movie theatre complex. Midwest city/Del City just recently announced they are in talk with amc about getting a 16 screen state of the art stadium complex off sooner rd. Where in the hell is Edmonds big time new movie theatre? I know we have a cheapy old school movie thatre next to interurban, but really come on people lol. I mean we all have to go to amc quail for a decent experience and its not very far, but sometimes dont you guys wish their was one around the corner and we didnt have to fight the memorial traffic to get to quail. Not to mention quail is somewhat going downhill, with all those hoodlum kids running around at night. I recently spoke to a lady in the edmond chamber of commerce, and she laughed and told me "thats what we been wondering for years is why we dont have a new theatre here in edmond". I mean norman, moore, del city, midwest city, mustang, and yukon all got theres, so wheres edmonds?
kevinpate 02-20-2010, 09:45 AM Maybe the theater developers long ago bought into some hype that every home in Edmond come with a 3 screen home theater addition and they figured, why bother?
8^)
Does seem odd though
OKCisOK4me 02-20-2010, 09:49 AM What happened to the Cinemark theater or whatever that was there on Bryant and Danforth in the shopping center just to the east of Sequoyah Middle School?! Forgive me, but I don't frequent this part of Edmond, even though I grew up in the same square mile...
Mr. T in OKC 02-20-2010, 10:01 AM There is Kickingbird Theatre on Danforth. I just went there this Valentine's Day
Lord Helmet 02-20-2010, 12:45 PM There is Kickingbird Theatre on Danforth. I just went there this Valentine's Day
That theater is like a time warp back to 1985
thevacman 02-20-2010, 05:35 PM I guess if you are going to refer to areas as Moore/Norman and Yukon/Mustang the you would have to say Edmond/OKC-Quail Springs. Most business along Memorial call themselves Edmond anyway. The new Ford dealership that moved from Edmond still calls itself Reynolds Ford of Edmond even though it's not in Edmond its in OKC.
fuzzytoad 02-20-2010, 10:15 PM That theater is like a time warp back to 1985
is that why the popcorn is so good?
Thunder 02-21-2010, 10:53 AM Since when did Del City/MWC announced a plan for one? Off of Sooner Rd and....what? Which side? Since when did both cities work together for a movie theater? Where is the news on this? Link? I see nothing at all. So.... If this is true, the movie theater is obviously going to only one city.... Del City or MWC. Which side of Sooner Rd?

^^^^ Yes I would like to know also!!!! MWC used to have 2 movie theatres right next to each other, 1 at heritage Park Mall, and one in a strip mall right next to it!55k in MWC and 25k in DC and Tinker!all that pop base to draw from and NO movies?just like Edmond-2nd largest Metro city and no movie theatre?
hipsterdoofus 02-22-2010, 09:00 PM Its simple - the same reason why Edmond doesn't have a lot of things - the developers know Edmondites will drive to Penn & Memorial, which they do, in droves.
sacolton 02-25-2010, 12:08 PM Wouldn't it be better to keep business in Edmond instead of making their residents spend their money in Oklahoma City county?
hipsterdoofus 02-25-2010, 01:21 PM Wouldn't it be better to keep business in Edmond instead of making their residents spend their money in Oklahoma City county?
I'm sure leaders of Edmond would believe that, but they seem to have a hard time convincing businesses of that.
Dustin 02-25-2010, 01:43 PM If there was a nice theatre in Edmond.. It would put amc quail outta buisness..
hipsterdoofus 02-25-2010, 04:29 PM If there was a nice theatre in Edmond.. It would put amc quail outta buisness..
Doubt it...people dump their kids off in the mall and think they don't have to worry about them then.
Jon27 02-25-2010, 07:23 PM Wouldn't it be better to keep business in Edmond instead of making their residents spend their money in Oklahoma City county?
Ummm....most of Edmond is in Oklahoma county.
EdmondBrad 02-26-2010, 09:13 AM Doubt it...people dump their kids off in the mall and think they don't have to worry about them then.
That's why I like our Edmond "80's" style theater. I feel very comfortable in dropping the kids off with friends to see a movie and picking them up afterwords. You also don't have to walk a mile and deal with shopping mall crowds to see a movie. I prefer seeing a movie at Kickingbird Square.
metro 02-26-2010, 10:15 AM If there is so much demand in Edmond (which has plenty of private "wealth") then why doesn't a private developer build one.
hipsterdoofus 02-26-2010, 10:56 AM If there is so much demand in Edmond (which has plenty of private "wealth") then why doesn't a private developer build one.
Like I said, there isn't the demand....since they know people will go to Penn & Memorial.
I rarely go to movies, but when I do, I go to tinseltown. That place became a ghost town after AMC opened - but it is very easy to get in and you don't have to deal with all the teeny boppers. In fact, I like the reclining seats at Tinsel Town better anyway.
Chase 02-26-2010, 11:53 AM Broken Arrow deals with the same issues of retail leakage. The proximity to Tulsa has hurt their efforts for retail. Only recently did BA get a Target and is just now getting a Cinemark 12. This will be an upgrade from the old Cinemark 8.

I enjoy Tinseltown's cheap tickets, reclining seats, and stabbings.

yeah, Tinseltown is one of the few places i get in some target practice outside of H&H
hipsterdoofus 02-26-2010, 03:04 PM I enjoy Tinseltown's cheap tickets, reclining seats, and stabbings.
to date, I've never been stabbed at tinseltown...
Truthfully, you may be safer there - you seen the amount of cops that hang around there? Not saying people should drop their kids off there, but I've never felt unsafe there.
I can't really bring myself to pay to go to kickingbird...it brings back too many memories of playing games of teenage mutant ninja turtles (you know, the cool 4 person arcade game?).

You're one of the lucky ones. :Smiley099
In all seriousness, Tinseltown would be my preferred theater, but the wifey won't go there b/c she doesn't think it's safe. It's my 2nd fav after Warren.

So could you tell me then since there are apparently so many, how many stabbings there have teen there? I am not sure I've heard of any...maybe one. Before AMC opened, Tinseltown was where all the AMC traffic went...only last a few months though, as I recall.

I can recall hearing about maybe 2 or 3 since it opened, if even that many. I love Tinseltown. Gotta keep the wife happy.
hipsterdoofus 03-01-2010, 02:26 PM I did see a fight in the theater at tinseltown...could have happened anywhere though. Security was on site quickly and the idiot who started it got his butt handed to him :-) It was better than the movie I was watching.
JohnDenver 03-01-2010, 04:20 PM I have lived in OKC for 1.5 years... and Tinseltown is the only theater we will go see movies. Granted, we aren't high schoolers, so we don't really go to evening movies very often, but we have NEVER seen anything sketchy there. Ever.
When we meet people and talk about where we go to movies, we always hear this reaction. I think it boils down to the proximity to black folk... or having the street address of MLK... It certainly isn't more sketchy than most places around Bell Isle.
Please give me the history of this MLK Tinseltown violence, I really am interested.
windowphobe 03-01-2010, 05:38 PM I'd rather go to Tinseltown than to a mall theater, any day.
hipsterdoofus 03-01-2010, 08:00 PM I'd rather go to Tinseltown than to a mall theater, any day.
EXACTLY...I hate AMC. I've never had problems at Tinseltown either.
bluedogok 03-01-2010, 08:13 PM I heard of problems at Tinseltown in the first year after it was opened, the last few years that I was living in OKC I heard about more problems around the Penn Square Mall theater than I did Tinseltown.
Debzkidz 03-02-2010, 09:04 AM Tinsletown is definitely my favorite place. I wish is was in Edmond, but compared to most cities, the drive to Tinsletown from Edmond is no big deal. We live near the Kickingbird Theater, so we go there occasionally, but really, I'd rather drive to Tinsletown. I always feel much safer there than going to Quail Springs, especially late at night. Quail Springs can be a creepy place.
hipsterdoofus 03-02-2010, 10:18 AM Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there had been a lot more break-ins and such to people's cars at quail springs than at Tinseltown...
KarNut 06-08-2010, 02:12 AM Gotta say, I love going to Kickingbird! All the pubecents go to QuailSprings and I can actually enjoy the movie!!!
soonerfan_in_okc 06-09-2010, 02:11 AM I guess if you are going to refer to areas as Moore/Norman and Yukon/Mustang the you would have to say Edmond/OKC-Quail Springs. AHAHAHAHA. Please don't start that crap. I do not go into places and ask "hey, where do you guys think you guys are socioeconomically?", and i doubt that they really care. But the fact is that NW OKC has grown towards memorial, removing any gap in between the two that could have caused one to think they were in edmond.
And do ya think that maybe the reason reynolds ford did not change its name from "edmond" to "okc" was because a "Reynolds Ford of Oklahoma City" already existed? Because that seems like a logical answer to me. You make it too easy.
cjohnson.405 07-13-2010, 07:20 PM Edmond needs a Studio Movie Grill....would go great in Kickingbird.
hipsterdoofus 07-14-2010, 09:49 AM I hadn't been to Kickingbird in years but almost went there to see Toy Story 3 - figured it would probably be cheaper than the big theaters and less hassle. Tried for 2 days to call the movie listing number and it would connect and do nothing. Could not find an alternate number anywhere to ask them what the deal was. I know you can get movie listings online, but I was wanting to find out their prices during the matinee and such. Anyway, apparently they have no web presence at all either. I ended up going to Tinseltown.
Vegan 07-23-2010, 02:26 PM I feel like an idiot because I keep seeing it mentioned all over these forums and yet I can't figure out....what the heck IS Tinseltown? For a while I thought it was Tulsa, but I can't imagine anyway driving all the way to Tulsa for a movie.
fuzzytoad 07-26-2010, 01:00 PM For a while I thought it was Tulsa, but I can't imagine anyway driving all the way to Tulsa for a movie.
I drive to Tulsa all the time for IMAX movies...
rcjunkie 07-26-2010, 02:25 PM Tinseltown is a movie theater across from Remingtion Park

MightyHorse 07-27-2010, 09:21 AM What is it that kids in OKC have to do that you cannot do in Edmond besides walk around in the mall?
Clubs.
Music venues.
Zoo.
Pro sporting events.
Concerts.
Shop.
MMA.
Museums.
Action sports park.
Frontier City.
Whitewater.
Paintball.
OKC2600.
Not get harassed by Edmond police when driving home after work late at night.
want more?
EdmondBrad 07-27-2010, 11:13 AM I think most respsonsible parents prefer their kids don't go to "clubs". My kids in the age range 13-18 no longer have much interest in the zoo and the once every 3 years that we do go, we don't mind driving. Redhawks games are fun. Concerts are fun. Edmond does have it share of music but we are lacking in Lady Gaga concerts. I have boys so shopping is really not on their list of actvities. MMA...maybe, doesn't really sound like "kid fun" to me though. 13-18 year olds don't want to go to museums. We have both indoor and outdoor skate parks. Frontier City is fun...it's as close for those of us from Edmond as it is to most in OKC. Whitewater is fun. We do have Pelican Bay but after about 10 years old, it's "lame". I'm not aware of any paintball venues in OKC. The only ones I know of are in Piedmont and Guthrie. I have no idea what OKC2600 is.
So really, there is nothing on that list that are things that are done with very much frequency with the exception of maybe Whitewater. Edmond has baseball, softball, rugby, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, skate parks, pelican bay, summer teen dances at the community center, movie theater (which I consider to be a much more kid-friendly environment than Quail Springs mall), batting cages, great parks with recreation programs for all ages and also music/entertainment/festivals, neighborhood swim teams, a lot of progressive churches with very active teen groups, UCO sports, school sports and activities, and Arcadia Lake with camping, boating, hiking, skiing, fishing and disc golf. Honestly, I've never heard one friend of my three children complain that there is nothing to do in Edmond. If my 15 year old isn't busy, he and his friends arrange a sand volleyball game at the church or a wiffle-ball tournament at Mitch Park. Much better in my book than wandering around the mall.

Are you saying my parents were irresponsible because I went to "clubs" before I turned 21?
Do you even know what "clubs" are available in OKC for the 16-20 age range? Obviously not.
The "music" Edmond has are church-band BS and Jazz crap that most teenagers aren't into.
MMA doesn't sound like "kid fun" ??? what planet do you live on?
The indoor/outdoor "skate parks" that exisat in Edmond are geared towards 10-14 years old children. Action Sports Park is a competition-level sporting facility that isn't closed every other saturday for birthday parties.
yes, there's paintball in OKC.
Everything you've mentioned that Edmond has(baseball, softball, rugby, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, skate parks, pelican bay, summer teen dances at the community center) are all structured, scripted, monitored activities. Guess what, most teens don't like structured, scripted activities with adults looking over their shoulders the entire time.
If your kids aren't bored to tears in Edmond, then they're all either under 16, boring, or church kids who are too scared to tell you how they actually feel.

Wow...I never knew going to church wasn't cool...forgive me. You know, there are kids who rather enjoy their church and youth group.
MightyHorse 07-27-2010, 03:38 PM Wow...I never knew going to church wasn't cool...forgive me. You know, there are kids who rather enjoy their church and youth group.
There are also kids who don't enjoy church, church youth groups or church-organized events.
There are also kids who enjoy church, but want to do something in Edmond that doesn't revolve around church.
There are also a large number of kids who are forced to do nothing but church events, aren't allowed so socialize outside of church and are unable to voice their opinion without having a sermon shoved down their throats. Those are the ones who experimented the most with drugs, sex and alcohol in college after they escaped the grasp of their parents.
At least, that's what I've seen at UCO the past 3 years.
I'm happy and all for those in Edmond that enjoy doing nothing but church activities, but what about the rest of the teens in Edmond?
Too bad so sad for them?
Lord Helmet 07-27-2010, 03:53 PM C
Action sports park.
Edmond had their skatepark before OKC...

No. 16 year olds shouldn't be at "clubs" with 20 year olds. Yes it would be irresponsible for me to allow. I agree with you on the music scene but we don't mind traveling to OKC, Norman or Tulsa on the occasion that someone we want to hear is playing. No...MMA isn't a family activity. I live very close to the skate park in Mitch park and walk by the skate park on the trails nearly every day...not only have I never seen a birthday party going on there, I don't think you can rent it out for a birthday party. To tell you the truth, most of the kids "outgrow" the skatepark before they are teens and the ones who don't are riding around smoking, playing grab-ass with their girlfriends and cursing like sailors around a bunch of 9 year old kids. Where is the paintball facility in OKC as we will probably visit it some time? As far as I know, there was only one..it was in an old grocery store and was very short lived, closing several years ago. As for you last point, my kids and most of their friends are very outgoing, athletic and fun. Yes, they go to church on Sunday and sometimes on Wednesday. They do some volunteer work on ocassion. They water ski, snow ski, rock climb, play sports, etc. Far from boring.
fuzzytoad 07-27-2010, 04:35 PM No...MMA isn't a family activity.
I think this my be why you and mightyhorse will never see eye-to-eye...
Of course MMA isn't a family activity(though it can be), and that's the point. Many Teens want to do Teen activities, something which Edmond is sorely lacking in, unless you count church activities, which many don't...
I think you're going to have a difficult time convincing anyone that Teens like doing nothing but "family" activities..

Why shouldn't they be at clubs with 20 year olds? what about the 16-18 clubs in OKC? is it also morally irresponsible for 16 year olds to go to clubs with 18 year olds?
Does your church's youth group activities have the same age restrictions?
Why does MMA have to be a "Family activity" is order for teens to enjoy it??? Are you trying to tell me that unless something is Family-oriented there's no way for Teens to participate? For the record though, there's always families at MMA events, so I'm not sure where you're getting this information.
The skate park at Mitch park is for little kids. Perhaps if there were an adult skatepark, or something like the Action Sports Park in OKC available in Edmond, there wouldn't be teens who gasp smoke and hang out with OMG girlfriends around a bunch of 9 year old kids.
Paintball in OKC: Dodge City Paintball and Laser Tag of OKC - 8408 Northwest 91st Street & Adventure World Indoor Paintball and Reball - 3020 NW 16th Street
Sports is fine and all, but where are Teens in Edmond supposed to go to just hang? Or Party?
The current choices are: Wal-Mart and the parking lot, Kickingbird theater(If you want to buy meth or pot), or some anonymous apartment where there might be a party. There's no nightlife in Edmond for Teens.
And I'm not quite sure why you're so hungup on Malls. Nobody I know over the age of 14 or 15 hangs out in malls. Wasn't that something from the 80s or 90s that kids used to do?
osupilot22 07-24-2011, 01:49 PM Since when does a "city" have to entertain teenagers?
hipsterdoofus 07-25-2011, 09:39 AM Since when does a "city" have to entertain teenagers?
If you mean city as in the governmental body, they don't. But if you mean businesses - certainly in Edmond there are a lot of teenagers whose parents give them a lot of spending cash, so I would certainly not fault a business for catering to them.
I was somewhat surprised to see the Starbucks at 15th and Santa Fe be one of the ones that closed because I used to notice regularly the HS students stopping in there on the way to school. Apparently they didn't really consider if it was doing well or not, just that it was a new location. Consequently, someone else saw the potential, and there is now and independent Coffee shop there. I hope he does well!
RadicalModerate 07-25-2011, 11:25 AM I think there was resistance on the part of the local police union to having to set their watches ahead an hour in order to bust non-adult movie goers leaving a Mega-Plex for virtual curfew violations. Not to mention the costs involved in building a "Crisis Center" and/or driving the scofflaws all the way to OKC so that their parents could be hassled by staff when they drove downtown to pick them up.
But that could simply be hearsay.
Or worse.
LowRyter 11-02-2011, 05:38 PM I'd rather go to Tinseltown than to a mall theater, any day.
agree
and don't have to hassle with parking bricktown or driving to more.
tinsletown is best deal around. good price, stadium seating, good sound system, easy parking and close drive.
why go anywhere else?
