Didn't know where else to ask this, but what do restaurants [especially buffets/cafeterias], grocery stores' delis, etc. do with any leftover prepared food?
I remember there used to be something called "Second Harvest" [or maybe "Second Helping"] where the food establishments donated the food remaining at the end of the day to the various food shelters, etc. But then, it seems that there was some controversy about it, and it stopped.
In these times with so many in need, does anyone or group do this....or is all the leftover, good, edible food just wasted???
Anyone know?

Most if not all is trashed, because of health department regulations, the risk of giving away prepared food for consumption is too risky.

Pity. I think I do remember something [whenever they were doing that before] about someone being afraid someone would sue if the food wasn't good...even though the fault might have been w/some source other than the original provider.
What a sad situation. :whiteflag So much good "could" be done, but can't be done because of a fear of a problem. I see all that food and think of the senior centers & shelters that could utilize it, but it just goes into the trash.
Thanks for answering the question.

I know this sounds bad but what if these places just set it out by the trash and if somebody wanted to pick it up they could?

So many things have been regulated to death in our good old USA. Friends were house parents at Boys Ranch Town in Edmond and told us that regulations forced them to throw out pretty much all leftovers. If one serving was taken out of a pan of lasagna the whole pan had to be dumped. This really defies common sense and truly is wasteful.
