Boy, when you're dead, they really fix you up. I hope to hell when i do die somebody has sense enough to just dump me in the river or something. Anything except sticking me in a goddam cemetery. People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on sunday, and all that crap. Who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody. ~j.d. Salinger, the catcher in the rye

It is especially weird to me in that I reread a couple of weeks ago 50 years after the first time as a colege freshman. To be honest, I was a bit let down. I felt guilty for not stil really loving it. I wondered then if JD had croaked and no one noticed. I hope ol' God didn't smite him because of my lack of esteem bestowing at this late date. I'll reread all the Glass family stuff now and I suspect it will all hold up better for me. And I suspect new stuff will be released before a croak. My brother did an oil painting of him for me from the portrait that was on the cover of Time. Still hangs in my studio.
