Spartan 12-15-2012, 12:20 PM I'm not sure if anyone has linked this, but Automobile Alley has a GREAT looking website now... Welcome to Automobilealley.org | Automobilealley.org (http://automobilealley.org)

Because there are very few, if any, legitimately on Broadway. I think, maybe 5 private residences total.

This needs to change. Surprised the building owners haven't already moved to increase the number of residents in the area. It's a big miss so far.
You've got to think housing projects will start popping up on AA.
But in a way, it's a good thing almost all the buildings to date have been for business, retail and restaurants. That's provided a fantastic base and housing should be the easy part.
The streetcar will be a massive catalyst for residential development.
wschnitt 12-17-2012, 11:47 AM I hope CD Warehouse stays there. People might consider a record store the ultimate underutilized space (that and maybe a pizza parlor) but it is still decent retail that's built up proven longevity in downtown.
How right you were.

Please note that their website doesn't consider Autombile Alley to be just Broadway. Here is their definition:
It covers a prime section of Downtown Oklahoma City from NE 13th Street to NE 4th Street, just west of Broadway and east to I-235.
Urban Pioneer 12-18-2012, 07:42 AM Ok. Lol. There still isn't any housing unless you count "just west of Broadway" to include the Garage Lofts, which are technically north of 13th.
So still no housing short of a few private residences unless I'm forgetting something.

It's not like that is something new. Those have always been the boundaries of the AA DISTRICT. Those boundaries have been consistent since the Automobile Alley Main Street Program days, are described in the Downtown BID, and are also reflected on the official Downtown OKC maps (http://www.downtownokc.com/DowntownInDetail/DowntownMapsandDirections.aspx).
Automobile Alley is not a street; it's a district.

5th Avenue Lofts. Not sure how many units there are there. There are also a couple of units above the scuba shop, and also above Broadway Wine Merchants is The Caliber (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Caliber/341192352613566), a private loft that is rentable for events.
The owner of Plenty Mercantile at 807 N. Broadway, Traci Walton, just filed a building permit to convert the roof deck of that building into a restaurant.
The building is owned by Meg Salyer:

Did it say for how much? Sounds expensive to add a rooftop restaurant.
ljbab728 01-09-2013, 10:13 PM Does that mean that an entire second floor will be added or will it be a totally outdoor restaurant?
betts 01-16-2013, 12:24 PM I wish they would buy the Century Apartment building on 9th St. That's another great old building that could use their touch. This garage should mean that they'll now start thinking about the Marion too, which would be excellent news.
metro 01-16-2013, 02:00 PM betts, I've always wanted to buy and renovate the Century building myself, but I don't have the funds so hopefully they will!
HangryHippo 01-16-2013, 03:02 PM Which building is the Century building? I can't think of it and Google Maps isn't jogging my memory.
This is the Century at 512 NW 9th; it's directly south of St. Anthony:

betts 02-18-2013, 05:58 PM I'm not sure what's going on at 12th and Broadway, but I would guess it's related to the City Arts Center. There is a series of metal bars in the ground, which they have painted, at to which they have attached colored material. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a sculpture. Regardless, there is also a tent structure adjacent to it. I can't imagine there's a ground breaking, since we haven't seen plans. Anyone know what's going on there?

There was an application for a sign permit a couple of weeks ago.
But there have been no other plans submitted, and they would have to go through the design committee before they could do anything.

Absolutely great store. I met one of the partners, and she's extremely nice and very optimistic about the future. They're open good hours, and I hope they are very successful! I guess they're getting ready to open a rooftop space too.

BNSF is performing normal track maintenance - they are replacing ties. They have been working their way southward for a while now. One huge improvement is the 10th Street crossing. It is vastly improved.

Down the street, the Plenty Mercantile store is starting work on its rooftop garden, where it
plans to offer gardening classes, outdoor yoga and other events.
Co-owner Traci Walton said a rooftop space has always been planned to further implement
the theme of the store.
“When we came up with our concept and our branding, we knew we wanted green space of
some sort,” Walton said. “It was an integral part of our initial planning. We looked for
buildings for more than a year, looking for that perfect spot.”
That spot is now at 807 N. Broadway Ave.
She said the garden fits perfectly with the developments in Automotive Alley, which is taking
existing buildings and reusing them for creative spaces and stores.
. . .
The rooftop space measures 2,000 square feet and will feature a vegetable garden as well as
a place for events. Berryman Enterprises of Oklahoma City is overseeing the project, which is
expected to take eight weeks.

catch22 05-02-2013, 01:22 PM Good to see more retail
Spartan 05-02-2013, 10:22 PM So... at this point, how much further along is N. Broadway toward creating a retail destination/critical mass than anything else has come in the last 25 or so years since FAO Schwartz was a flash in the pan?
My guess.. this is at least four times the critical retail mass than we've had in recent memory. The next best was when Firefly and LiT and a few others existed in Bricktown and mostly all fizzed out. Automobile Alley is really beginning to look like the pre-eminent urban retail district.

I agree, I never understood establishments not making use of rooftops. Even residential is lacking immensely when it comes to rooftop commons.

It is great....but it will even be better once there is one dedicated to a bar/restaurant and not just some special event space above offices/retail. If there is a nice evening, no matter the day of the week, itd be nice to go sit on the roof and get a drink.
