grantgeneral78 01-16-2010, 06:17 AM That is a great video you can see exactly now where the track set by the speedway
bluedogok 01-16-2010, 09:57 AM My dad raced some out there when I was little. The dragstrip is where he taught me how to drive a car.
skyrick 01-16-2010, 03:11 PM Thanks Frisky.
I well remember when the motor was in front of the driver. Am I wrong in remembering that the reason they started mounting them behind the driver (69-71?) was some nasty incidents involving the flywheel when motors blew?
The rails were so short! Do you remember what year they established the AA/FD class? I believe I remember that Funny Cars came out of the FX, Factory Experimental class of the mid '60s. (The Ramchargers!) My favorite class besides the AA/FD was AA/FA, the Altereds, old Ford Anglias with monster motors!
Thanks for bringing back the memories!
Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, "Grumpy" Jenkins, Sox & Martin, Mickey Thompson, Connie Kalitta. Sorry, I had to get that out of my system!
USG '60 01-16-2010, 03:24 PM Thanks Frisky.

gen70 01-16-2010, 04:48 PM Would anyone know about what age Ciff Armstrong is? Was he the owner of the gas station in Capitol Hill close to Shipman's?

Cliff passed away years ago, his wife and my Mother are good friends. If he were alive he would be late seventies at least! He owned Armstrong Automotive on S Robinson at about 22nd or 23rd on the West side of the St. I went to Church with him when I was a kid and used him to tune up my Hot Rods!! Kenny Castor and his Dad had a Sinclair station on S.E.15th a few blocks east of Central!!
gen70 01-16-2010, 05:38 PM Hey..Thanks CK! I have probably met you before because I ran around with Cillf's son Neal and we hung out at Cliff's bus. alot. I also knew Neal's sister. (Don't remember her name) Sad to hear of Cliff's passing, he was a super nice guy and so is his wife. I was told one time that Cliff built the engine for Jimmy Nix that he did so well in that one season. Also, I was told that he would "hop up" a lawn mower engine on occasion.
Oh GAWD the Smell! 01-18-2010, 03:47 PM MAN...I wish I could race at The Fairgrounds!
Noble is a loooooong drive from Choctaw.
Great video!

village idiot 01-18-2010, 08:33 PM Grotheer was sponsored by Gale Cable. He called his car "The Cable Car". I talked to Don last june at the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green. He is displaying one of his old cars at the Reunion gigs. I drove to Indy in 1969 for the Nationals. I saw Don Grotheer, Jimmy Nix, Bennie Osborn and Glenn Self run that year, all OKIES. Self won his class with a six banger camaro. A lot of good footage is around from the good old days of drags. That still remains one of my best trips ever. Who needed Woodstock when you could go see AA fuelers!

Prunepicker 01-24-2010, 11:31 PM Does anyone know what the name of the motel is that's in Frisky's video?
Is it what's currently the women's prison that's west of N.W. 39th and N.
May?
village idiot 01-25-2010, 09:02 PM P-Picker, the car is looking great. Nothing like a Mean-Green-Chick-Getting-Machine.
Okcbld 02-09-2010, 05:31 PM I think the motel was just west of Lincoln on Route 66 north side. The give away is the double overpass just as they leave the motel.
gen70 02-11-2010, 01:04 PM Yep, number 10 Carl Ferguson.
Was Carl Ferguson related to Gene Ferguson?
CarltonsKeeper 02-11-2010, 01:10 PM Was Carl Ferguson related to Gene Ferguson?

Gene's sister "Fergy" actually I think her real name is Sherry, lives around the corner from a friend mine and he see's Gene there quite a bit!! "Fergy" being short for Ferguson of course. I know you grew up on 43rd just East of Rancho drive; did you know that Jo Ann Street West of you was named after Gene's mother who has since past!! James Dr. was named after one of Lawrence Redings brothers years ago who died at an early age. Kind of interesting...

Ruth or (Ruthie) lived right behind me on Magdalena, North side of sreet just east of Rancho Dr. about the 1st or second house. She lived next door to the kid Buzzy Waters (forgot his first name, Walter???) Lawrence was divorced from her but I remember going over there and her and Lawrence would be drunk! Not to be disrespectfull, but she was a bigger drunk than Lawrence!! Her maiden name or middle name may be the name of one of those streets? Kincaid, Magdalena, James, Johnston Dr. and Reding Drive are the only ones I can remember... P.S. I heard your commercial on KOMA the other morning just for FYI........Good time slot!!
gen70 04-13-2010, 07:46 PM Buzzy Waters...That'a a name I haven't thought about for a long, long time.
corpsman 04-13-2010, 10:16 PM Right after I was released from active duty, I worked at a local hospital with a southside guy named Buzz Waters. His given name was Brent. Became a doctor and the last time I saw anything about him, he was a trauma doc at South Community, giving a TV interview in regards to a baby who had been severely abused. Lost all contact with him '73 or '74. If I'm not mistaken he was a Grant grad.
