Thunder 01-30-2010, 02:24 PM I had to work yesterday. I kept scraping off the ice on the windshield and driver's side when I went out 3 times before the snow. It wasn't that bad to clear out the snow and scrap what was left of the ice. I didn't clear the passenger's side and the back, cuz it's a frickin thick sheet of ice. lol

Bunty 01-30-2010, 03:00 PM I usually try to remember to spread a big old sheet across the windshield and front windows to prevent the above when frozen weather is in the forecast. I don't care how stupid and ridiculous it looks before the snow and ice comes.
westsidesooner 01-30-2010, 03:25 PM Nice pictures. I love that area.
Thanks, we love it too. The mature Oaks and rolling hills are the main reason we bought a home in this part of town. You can see why I'm so excited that the ice wasn't as bad here as we were expecting. If we'd had freezing rain for another hour or two rather than the change over to sleet it would have been devestating. I feel for thise further south and west. It's hard to replace mature trees. Lets hope thats the last of the ice for this season.
And Bunty...I meant to put plastic on my truck windows too, but got busy doing other things.....I had to park in the street to avoid leaving it under a tree.....and spent nearly 45 minutes trying to dig through the layers of ice this morning. Next time I'll remember the plastic.
sacolton 01-31-2010, 07:08 PM Every major school is closed Monday.
bandnerd 01-31-2010, 07:16 PM And a lot of the minor schools, as well ;)
I wouldn't want to drive a school bus at 6am tomorrow morning.

Hmm, can never get a picture to take.
MadMonk 01-31-2010, 08:32 PM Don't understand why the schools are closed. The roads aren't that bad in most areas. Hasn't anyone ever heard of tire chains?
bandnerd 01-31-2010, 08:58 PM More of a bus issue than anything, I would imagine. I know at my school, we don't have buses, so the kids have to get themselves there. We might have so many absent that we couldn't count the day, anyway. And I know that parking lot isn't cleared and you have to drive up a hill to get to it!
westsidesooner 01-31-2010, 08:59 PM Interesting phenomenon on the westside today.....
It snowed lighty this morning and then again moderately this afternoon...enough to cover the cars and streets. I assumed it was like that everywhere so it didn't seem odd then I saw something about it on news9 at 5:30. Apperently the mustang power plant is putting out enough steam to cause snow near lake overholser. It's still showing snow on radar at 9pm

bandnerd 01-31-2010, 09:25 PM We had snow here on NW Expressway and MacArthur late morning/early afternoon all the way over to Penn Square mall. That's really interesting. Hope it wasn't toxic or anything!

lol...I've got a craving for brains this evening. http://www.feebleminds-gifs.com/1zombiegif.gif
Thunder 01-31-2010, 10:33 PM I thought that I noticed a lil more snow on the trees.

Be nice!!

Most of the neighborhood streets are still horrible. There's no way buses would make it thru them without getting stuck.

This is a big one. Down here in Norman, the city crews must be sitting on their hands or something. Main streets should be clean and they should be on the residential streets now. Unfortunately, I think they just gave up and are going to wait for things to melt.
adaniel 02-01-2010, 11:48 AM Must have been the thought process of ODOT as well. NW Expressway was a disaster this morning. Hardly 2 lanes were clear in each direction. Coming off Council this morning (which was a city snow route and was very clear) it was like night and day.
Fortunately tommorow will be sunny and above freezing so at least the matted down snow will break up a little.
BrettL 02-01-2010, 11:49 AM My street in Coffee Creek in Edmond is literally PURE ICE. I almost got stuck with my 4WD. A bus doesn't stand a chance.
PennyQuilts 02-01-2010, 12:17 PM Stuff is melting on its own but we don't get any help on this street, anyway. I haven't seen too many cars going down S. Council. I need to run some errands as soon as the mail gets here. Anyone know how the streets are looking in Mustang?

I don't understand this at all. NW Expressway was fine up until about 63rd yesterday and then it just went to crap. It seems like the plowed half of it! MacArthur is clear, and was in December, as well. Seems to me that being a highway, NW Expressway would actually be, oh, I don't know, a priority???

Main roads in NOKC/Edmond are passable, but the neighborhood roads? Forget it. My road has about 3" of solid ice on it. Could get skates out and it would be easier than driving. Just take it slow and hope no other bozos are out there to
Nothing like an @$$#*!& in his/her 4-wheel drive pickup truck who thinks they can get away with driving like an @$$#*!& because of what they drive. Had someone tailgating me on the B'Way extension Friday morning. I would normally tap my brakes in such a scenario, but was not about to in those conditions. I couldn't get over at that time, either, becausae there was someone in the other lane. No excuses for driving like a bat out of hades in that stuff.
I actually got rear-ended this morning downtown when I had to stop on a downslope and the person behind me slid right into me. No damage to my car (at least on the outside), but we'll still need to take care of it.
I remember when we had a storm about two weeks ago, several schools were closed for just over a week and it was largely due to the accumulated amount of ice on roads. Parents could barely get out and buses certainly couldn't get in.
venture 02-01-2010, 01:08 PM Maybe eventually, the local street crew will learn how to properly clean streets and the way they should attack them. Snow has been done for awhile now, no reason for there to still be anything on any roads.
MadMonk 02-01-2010, 01:15 PM Most of the neighborhood streets are still horrible. There's no way buses would make it thru them without getting stuck.
Tire. Chains. My neighborhood is mostly ice too, but that's what chains are for! But maybe there's no budget for those for as little as they'd need to use them.

I sure wouldn't hold my breath. This must be a funding issue - in Edmond at least - because I'll been driving around doing errands most of the day all around Edmond and I haven't seen one plow truck.
BrettL 02-01-2010, 01:18 PM Tire. Chains. But maybe the budget for those isn't there for as little as they'd need to use them.
Yeah prob. And it prob would take forever to get chains on hundreds of buses.

There's no budget for anything...the schools are lucky to still have running buses.

Probably hit it on the head. They aren't going to be used that often, and I wouldn't be shocked if some cities restrict their use. Of course they are legal by the state, but not sure if the cities can go further. They are horrible for the streets and cause quite a bit of wear. Where I grew up, we got on over 40-50 inches of snow per year, but tire chains were illegal for use on any public street.
venture 02-01-2010, 11:00 PM Oh i forgot, so I double checked. Chains are illegal on vehicles over 2 tons, so I would image that could rule out school buses.
OUman 02-02-2010, 09:16 AM On the east side of Norman, it was still very bad yesterday in the residential areas (it took me 15-20 minutes to get to the CART bus stop trying as best as I could to walk two blocks and avoid falling). Norman never plows the residential streets or even salts/sands them, it's probably not included in the budget.
It is however, much better this morning, with the temperature having risen above freezing. Unfortunately it looks like the southern branch of the jet will be active the next week or so...
