Steve 08-19-2008, 10:46 PM The poll at okc central is over now - and almost 50 percent predict the tower will be 45 to 55 stories high. I say these folks are a pretty savy bunch....
mheaton76 08-19-2008, 10:53 PM Steve...thanks for the heads up. Very cool. Is the information embargo on the renderings going to be over after 11am??

woops, answered my own question by reading your blog - 9:30 then!
Kerry 08-19-2008, 11:04 PM 55 stories huh. Lets see, the Bank of America building in Atlanta is 55 stories and is 1023'. Could an 800' tower be possible? I guess we will know in about 12 hours.

Just as I had expected and heard!
I hope this means everything else I have heard is true as well. If so, this is all going to be very exciting.
Thunder 08-20-2008, 02:43 AM What if they announce the building will have 100 floors with nonstop water flowing down on all sides from top to bottom?

What to Expect
The Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority is set to hear a presentation for the proposed Devon Energy tower and then could vote to name the company developer of city-owned land along Sheridan Avenue across from the Myriad Gardens. The presentation will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include renderings and a model of the project.
Oklahoman Business Writer Steve Lackmeyer will provide live coverage of the design presentation and will post renderings first on his blog at OKC Central — All about downtown OKC (http://www.okccentral.com).

Advance unveiling of Devon tower plans at today's Urban Renewal meeting.
"It's the most anticipated announcement in the last couple of decades.”
Brett Hamm
"What has been fun is that the design we ended up with was not everyone's first choice at all,” Nichols said in an interview with The Oklahoman. "Some of the more traditional designs people were naturally attracted to as opposed to the shape we ended up with.”
Nichols, chairman and chief executive officer of Devon, admitted he's just as excited about seeing public reaction to the tower designs as the public is about seeing them. Nichols first announced plans to build a new downtown corporate headquarters in March and predicted the building will be at least 37 stories high and would cost more than $350 million. Construction could begin by late 2009.
Details being kept secret
Nichols isn't changing his predictions, but he's keeping further specifics secret until they are unveiled at 9:30 a.m. today at the board meeting of the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority. The meeting was relocated from Urban Renewal's offices to the auditorium of the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library to accommodate an expected crowd of dignitaries and the simply curious wanting to get a first look.
"It's the most anticipated announcement in the last couple of decades,” said Brett Hamm, president of Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. "We haven't seen a corporate tower built downtown for some time and this is a significant symbol of growth for Oklahoma City.”
Several ideas studied
The presentation is set to be led by Dallas developer Gerald Hines and Connecticut architects William Chilton and Jon Pickard.
Nichols said he was intrigued by the design process, where engineers, space planners and architects picked apart about eight different design concepts. Heating and air experts looked at how different building shapes either repelled or attracted heat or cold and at which ones might be most energy efficient, for example. Other experts focused on how the building designs might stand up to Oklahoma wind, while another team looked how to create a safe workplace.
Nichols said many of the design experts didn't care about the building's exterior. Yet, "they all ended up with the same building,” Nichols said. "And it is not a traditional design.”
An evolving downtown
Nichols hinted the building may not be a simple, rectangular box as is prevalent with most of the high-rises built downtown the past 40 years. He said the interior designers find a rectangular design with long straight hallways an easy task for office layouts.
"When they studied the design we ended up with, they discovered it was just as efficient, in terms of using the greatest number of net feet as the traditional design,” Nichols said. "So it was quite fun.”
Nichols is curious about how downtown might evolve with the new tower — and he's realized after looking at cities like Charlotte, N.C., that a "new, interesting building” didn't just change the skyline, but made its downtown a more exciting place to work.
"The trend we have going on here ... where we are doing things outside of our historic mold — getting an NBA team here, all the success we have had with Bricktown — this city has been fighting to get outside of its stereotype for a long time,” Nichols said. "The city has been doing an awful lot of positive things to get out of that stereotype. We are growing a new one that says we are growing, dynamic, exciting place to be.”
"It's the most anticipated announcement in the last couple of decades.”

Jesseda 08-20-2008, 07:25 AM i heard from the news its going to be 37 stories plus extra space on top , what does that mean a needle, or a design, but only truely 37 stories for working space?
sroberts24 08-20-2008, 08:48 AM the news said at least 37 stories
I don't think Metro is going to like this thread.
OKCMallen 08-20-2008, 09:11 AM I think OKCMallen likes it. I'm pretty pumped to see this sucker.
ourulz2000 08-20-2008, 09:11 AM My final guess, 40 stories. 630 feet.
jbrown84 08-20-2008, 09:16 AM 55 stories. 900 feet.
PLANSIT 08-20-2008, 09:18 AM 48 Floors, 767 ft

metro 08-20-2008, 09:32 AM BDP, I don't know why you say that. Anyhow, to the people saying 37 stories. Yes we know that, that is the minimum Devon has said it would be on the record. Keep in mind their is no real investigative journalism in this town, and even if there was, they wouldn't know more than Devon has publicly disclosed already. They are just reading the press release on the "news". Anyhow, I guess we'll know exacts here in a few minutes.
From Steve's blog (which is getting overwhelmed with traffic) -- here's the model about to be unveiled:
http://blog.newsok.com/okccentral/files/2008/08/model.jpg
jbrown84 08-20-2008, 09:34 AM Look how tall the box has to be to hide it, compared to Chase on the right.
sroberts24 08-20-2008, 09:35 AM AHHHH!!!! hurry!!!!
metro 08-20-2008, 09:36 AM Could be for dramatic effect though, or so people walking by won't see over the top of it, BUT I hope I'm wrong and it is crazy tall.
Jesseda 08-20-2008, 09:36 AM wow the building is as wide as the entired downtown, it takes up almost all of downtown and is as twice as tall as the current largest building wow ...... Just kidding I know itsa unveiling box..
autoMATTic 08-20-2008, 09:38 AM HAHAHA... I dont think it is actually that tall. Would be cool though.
BDP, I don't know why you say that.
I was just kidding. Duplicate thread mainly to pimp a blog. You usually call posters out on these things.

I love it! That thing is massive!
Jesseda 08-20-2008, 09:38 AM also on the news thism orning they said it will be the tallest building in okc, but they didnt say state? I thought it was going to be the biggest in the state
betts 08-20-2008, 09:39 AM 54 stories. Nice.
Insider 08-20-2008, 09:40 AM WOW...54 story glass building...that building looks great
PLANSIT 08-20-2008, 09:40 AM I'm disappointed, it's a box.

HOLY HECK!!!
Gorgeous, tall & striking!
JACKPOT!!!!!
FritterGirl 08-20-2008, 09:41 AM Color rendering up on Steve's blog. From that perspective, it looks twice as tall as Chase. Not sure exact floors yet.
Edit: Pete beat me to the punch.
Amazing structure. Love it!!! Can't wait to see more details.
ourulz2000 08-20-2008, 09:41 AM Amazing! :congrats:
jbrown84 08-20-2008, 09:41 AM 55 stories. 900 feet.
55 stories 750 ft
53 floors, 810 feet
Now we just need the height to see who wins! ;)
Kerry 08-20-2008, 09:42 AM I'm disappointed, it's a box.
It is actually a hexagon - 6 sides
Insider 08-20-2008, 09:42 AM How exactly do you call that a box? The Chase building is a box...
CCOKC 08-20-2008, 09:42 AM I was definitely not disappointed. It's lovely.
More from Steve's blog:
Plans are being unveiled now at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library. A packed auditorium of business and civic leaders were in attendance as architects showed off plans for a 54-story glass tower. Devon Energy submitted the only response to a request for development proposals for the city-owned parcel across from the Myriad Gardens. Devon hopes to start construction by the third quarter of 2008.
The building floors will range from 25,000 to 28,000 square feet. The tower will appear to float in the reflecting pool that rings its base. Several glass enclosed atria spaces will be incorporated within the development. THe focal point of the space is a six-story glass rotunda, located in line with the Harvey Avenue access drive, which will serve as the primary pedestrian entrance for both Devon employees and the general public.
betts 08-20-2008, 09:42 AM I think it looks great. It's a very sophisticated look.
Insider 08-20-2008, 09:44 AM I think there is a typo...I think the construction start date is third quarter 2009, not 2008.
54 floors with a huge atrium and some architectural elements at the top...
This may be close to 900 feet as opposed to Chase's 500.
jbrown84 08-20-2008, 09:46 AM Well I think they plan to start this year. Maybe he meant 4th Q 2008.
OKCMallen 08-20-2008, 09:46 AM I hope no one is disappointed. Looks incredible.
FritterGirl 08-20-2008, 09:46 AM I hope the glass from the rendering actually has that color palette, and that is not just reflection from the sun. Would be really cool to have some kind of subtle "design" element in the glass.
warreng88 08-20-2008, 09:47 AM Gerald Hine is talking now:
The developer flew in from London to make this presentation
“Over the last 50 years our firm has had the privledge of designing signature office buildings throughout the land.”
Such projects, he says, can enrich a the lives and cultural fabric of a community.
“Devon has assembled a world class team to assemble this project.”
“Pickard Chilton Architecture has redefined and enhanced skylines throughout the world.”
soonerguru 08-20-2008, 09:50 AM That is indeed a sophisticated look. Very proud of Devon for getting this right. This will provide such a beautiful and powerful focal point in our skyline. Stunning.
OKC74 08-20-2008, 09:51 AM I am absolutely impressed! I think it's striking, gorgeous, and will enhance our skyline tremendously! Way to go!!! Now...just to find out the exact height AND be able to see some different angles!!! :)
