Thunder 02-07-2011, 12:10 AM Very nice, earlywinegareth!
Yesterday (since its passed midnight already), I was driving westbound and the tower seem to have dropped in height and Chase growing. LOL! Just seem weird. Maybe it was the cloudy weather. Then going eastbound, the tower seem to have went back up to Chase level. :-O
earlywinegareth 02-07-2011, 09:05 AM I think my favorite vantage point of downtown will be from the SW with DT front and center.
Took this from the OK River. http://www.flickr.com/photos/earlywinegareth/5423502601/in/photostream/
This from the new Western Ave bridge over the new I-40. http://www.flickr.com/photos/earlywinegareth/5424076068/in/set-72157625993986908/
CaseyCornett 02-07-2011, 02:44 PM So, when does this officially become the tallest building in the city? Any day, right?
Dulahey 02-08-2011, 08:39 AM So, when does this officially become the tallest building in the city? Any day, right?
Pretty much. On Sunday I was looking at them from highway 9 in Newcastle and they're pretty dead even right now.
Btw, this vantage point is great. You can look down on the entire metro area. Somebody with a really good camera and tele lens could probably get a cool picture of downtown from here. It's exactly 20 miles away.
earlywinegareth 02-08-2011, 09:24 AM So the thread has been renamed "Devon Energy Center". Did I miss the name change from Devon Tower? Emporis calls it "Devon Energy Tower". There's already a "Devon Energy Center" skyscraper in Houston. Anyone have Larry Nichols' cell?

I know. I disagree with the name change. Whoever did it, I'd like the discussion topic changed back to Devon Tower: Officially Under Construction as that is what we are talking about here.
Kerry 02-08-2011, 09:54 AM Not sure if it is the intention, but I do like a "place" driven form. So threads, when possible are about places. I could get used to the change.
I actually like the change as well. It creates longer threads about the same topic and not a bunch of short threads that get created everytime the paper comes out with a new story.
So the thread has been renamed "Devon Energy Center". Did I miss the name change from Devon Tower?
Yes, you must have because it is officially known as Devon Energy Center and has been for a while.
FYI, that is term for the entire complex which is what is being discussed on this thread.
earlywinegareth 02-08-2011, 12:43 PM Has been for a while? I googled/found only one reference to "Devon Energy Center" in a Jan 16 '11 column by Steve on NewsOk.com. I guess 3 weeks constitutes "a while". News to me...but makes sense.
The official name was mentioned in earlier articles several months ago.

euphjay 02-09-2011, 10:29 AM Speaking of the Devon Tower's wiki page...
Other than billion being spelled wrong, I thought this project was significantly less expensive than this.
Cost $1.75 bilion (est.)
Devon Tower wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Tower)
Cost is $.75 billion not $1.75 billion.

It's had that on its own garage for a while now.
Steve 02-11-2011, 08:21 PM BDP, Pete's right - it's been out for a while - I just didn't get around to using the name until recently.

UnFrSaKn 02-14-2011, 04:05 PM I'm ready to get back out there for video updates. Were it not for the weather delay, they probably would have topped Chase in time for this week. I don't suppose anyone knows an exact update on this?
By the way, could anyone tell me exactly what window and floor the construction web cam points out of? Perhaps Pete? Just curious so I know where to look next time. It's very hard to spot from the ground.

If your were south of the building looking north it seems that the camera location is slightly west and a few floors up from the building that lines up with the tower. You can see it in the tower cam, the east side of tower and west side of the building line up like a gun sight. Not sure what building that is. Might help a bit.

The building is Corporate Tower. Yeah, I know those details, but you still can't spot it unless you know exactly.
Dustin 02-15-2011, 04:14 AM On News9, Garry England showed a picture of the tower from the Chase that was just jaw dropping! The sun was going down and the tower really stood out. I hope someone can find it, because I had no luck...

I just asked Gary. We'll see what he says.
Certainly Devon is now taller than Chase.
31 completed levels puts it right at 497 feet (Chase is 500) plus the elevator cores are at least one full level higher and they have already started on level 32.
Two months from now, it should pass the BOK Tower to become tallest in the state.
soonerwilliam 02-15-2011, 10:49 AM Where's our monthly update from Bryanosaurus? I always look forward to seeing it.
plmccordj 02-15-2011, 01:51 PM Can you refresh me on how tall each level is? I could have sworn that I read on here that the first six floors were 21 feet and the remaining 25 levels were 15 feet. That would put it at 501. I cannot find that post which makes me think that I misread it or forgot the actual numbers.
Thanks
I have the first 6 floors at 20 feet and the others at just over 15.
The top 4 floors will be about 20 feet each and the crown a total of 60 feet.
plmccordj 02-15-2011, 01:55 PM Thank you sir. I will have to write that down.

It should top out in August at this rate. Not sure how much the tapering at the top will slow things down though.

Floors 7 thru 46(?) are 14'-8" floor to floor...
The taper begins at the 37th floor, approx. 5-6 weeks away...
Currently working on 32nd floor, throw in the core height and it's close to 500'...
Should surpass BOK in 12 weeks at 1 floor per week...

Mid-Continent is only 516 feet. Devon Tower can move up to third tallest in Oklahoma in about two weeks.
Dulahey 02-16-2011, 06:51 AM I have to say it's kind of a shame to me that the Lunch Box is raking in so much business.
I used to love that place until me and my co-workers got *attacked* by cockroaches one day....
Never going back.

Wow! My home town is really growing up. Didn't realize until now WHAT an impact the Devon tower would make on the overall 'feeling' of downtown. This shot looks like a busy section of Toronto, NYC or Chicago. Impressive.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Devon Energy world headquarters tower will officially be the tallest building in the city when workers pour the foundation for the 33rd floor in the next few weeks.
The project is set to reach its peak employment level at about the same time, with approximately 1,000 workers on-site each day. Building crews recently started doing interior construction and electrical work on the lower floors of the 50-story tower.
“The tower almost becomes a timeline of construction, with the completed construction at the bottom and as you look up, you almost go back in time,” said John Wood, vice president at Hines, the developer for the Devon tower.
The building gains about one story every five days. Columns of reinforced steel on the structure stretch up to the 32nd floor this week and workers have just laid the foundation for the 31st floor.
An average of 900 workers are employed at the $750 million construction site each day.
Construction on the tower was briefly held up by the recent snowstorms, but weather over the past several months has been mostly fair and work on the tower is still running a little ahead of schedule, Wood said.
Wood said construction will be completed sometime during the third quarter of 2012. Devon will begin moving employees into the new building during the first quarter of 2012, while interior construction of the building is still ongoing, said Devon spokeswoman Alesha Leemaster.
“As completed floors are released to us we’ll fill those until the building is full, but it will take six to nine months,” Leemaster said.
"Devon will begin moving employees into the new building during the first quarter of 2012"
Hard to believe people will be working in that building in just a year's time.
soonerwilliam 02-16-2011, 11:07 AM Devon Tower will be the same height as the GE Building in NYC and Chase Building in Chicago. They will all be 850 ft. tall and the 31st tallest buildings in the U.S.
