I think that's actually an "Auger Pressure Grouted" rig.

Pics from Sunday March 28.

Note: Construction crews have replaced the architectural trim/element on the top of the East Garage and it blocks the site line from the garage into the tower site. So no pics from that familiar perspective.

A friend and I went to the site for the first time on Friday and wondered how y'all were getting those pictures. We went down to the 4th level and could see. The Oklahoman cam is nice but not close enough to see details and the close up is too grainy to see much more than movement going on.

Great pics! DelCamino, one thing I've done to avoid that "architectural element" you speak of, is go down to one of the lower floors and take pics, there is nothing obstructing your views on the lower level. Sure they've put netting up, but people have already punched lots of holes in it. I'm curious though, how did you get those west view shots, did you stand in the Colcord rear parking lot? I shot some pics last night too and believe I got some good angles that haven't been posted yet, I haven't looked at them on the computer yet though.

Yeah, I was disappointed when I went up there Saturday and saw the new trim. It takes away a cool onsite view.

Another thing I've been really curious about is how they add extensions to those tower cranes. I've never actually seen it done and I can't figure out how they do it.

Thanks.

I went to the lower floors of the garage, but didn't see any holes in the netting. I know they are there but didn't go seeking them out.

Yes...the west views are from the Colcord property.

It looks like they are starting to set the forms for the basement walls! Woohoo! I can't wait to start seeing walls go up. I haven't been to the site in almost a week. I'll have to get over there at lunch tomorrow. I also heard more Devon employees are supposed to start parking in the new garage in April. I wonder if there are any better views from the Devon garage? (hint, hint)

From what I understand, Devon employees have been parking in the new garage for weeks, if not over a month or so now.

I call next weekend on crane three and and three weeks out on crane four.

How about taking bets on the date that Devon Tower officially becomes surpasses Chase Tower, and the date that it surpasses the BOK Tower in Tulsa.

That's an interesting post, from a historical perspective. During the "great skyscraper race" in the early '30s, people openly wagered on whether Ramsey Tower (City Place) or First National would top out first.

Also, I was hoping nobody on here would betray my favorite site-watching spot, behind the Colcord. Now it surely will be overrun with lookieloos. Thanks guys.

Those are the forms for the concrete shear walls that will end up becoming the elevator shaft walls. Those shear walls will become the core of the building. they are a predecesor to the forming of the next levels floor slab.

Also behind 55 N Robinson (just north of Colcord) is pretty good view.

I'm putting my camera in my bag now, so I can get some from office tomorrow. I can't believe how different it looks from being gone a week!

Super good news that no one was hurt! That is again quite amazing considering how much activity and how congested the site really is. Tons of workers in an around the vacinity when the accident occured. What a blessing.

With the fact that no one was hurt, does anyone know if that will shut down the job site for saftey investigation by OSHA or on this one do they simply have to clear the damged crane while unaffected areas of the site move forward? The people in the mobile office bldg are lucky it didn't list over to the side. It looks precariously close to that mobile building and they will have to be extremely careful in the removal of the crane to prevent further damage to both the crane and the building. Crazy!

I just walked over to the site and the collapse is taped off but everyone else is still working. I'm guessing they won't upright the crane until OSHA and their safety guys get there.

03-30-2010, 11:31 AM
Glad no one was hurt, but sounds more like media hype when they say "crane collapsed" versus "machine overturned" or whatever that machine is called. They hyped it up as if one of the main tower cranes collapsed.

OKC@heart
03-30-2010, 11:37 AM
Well you know it isn't news if it doesn't let the viewer jump to the worst conclusion so that they will watch to then find out that it was a crane indeed but one of the smaller mobile ones. To be clear it was a serious accident and could have been much worse, but of course the media is going to blow it out of proportion, to grab ratings where they can.

A coworker of mine spoke with one of the construction workers who was nearby the scene at the time. He said that the crane operator simply tried to lift too much weight for the angle of the boom at the time. The operator felt it tipping and braced himself with his feet against the glass and was unharmed.

I have seen or heard nothing that indicated that the dirt played any role in the accident and further from the look of it, the dirt is the one thing that remained in place.

As is typical of most crane accidents (with few exceptions) it boils down to operator error, usually in the area of judgement.

dedndcrusr
03-30-2010, 01:45 PM
One thing that could have been a factor is today's high wind. The form that was being lifted at the time had a lot of surface area and could have acted as a sail.

jn1780
03-30-2010, 01:58 PM
I was watching the skyline cam a minute or two before the crane fell over before I started doing something else. The crane was lifting the panel into the air at that time. Shows how little time it takes to miss something.

I hope this doesn't delay the project too long. Looks like form installation is halted for today.

Devon March 30 incident - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lauri101/sets/72157623612464901/)

Here are pictures taken right after incident.
It was rather interesting - immediately after the topple, there was a lot of stuff on the ground - mostly trash/scraps.
An hour later, that area was clean. My picture 100-3094 shows the pre-clean-up area. I didn't take any afterwards.

Great Shots, thanks to both of you for taking the time to capture and post the images. It will be interesting to see when and how they decide to right the toppled crane. I would imagine it takes a fairly large one or two to make it happen, 60 tons is a lot of crane to pull over, while trying to avoid flatening the buildings around it.

I don't even know how they'd start, unless it would be to perhaps dismantle the crane?

Thank God it wasn't one of the tower cranes. I could see some of the faces after it happened and you could tell the workers were visibly shaken.
