Tower looked awesome from the dam at lake hefner tonight. Water was somewhat calm and the reflection was awesome!

So is a bull whip. The higher you get from the ground the worse it would be unless the building is equipped with a damping system.

Its not really that tall to need a damping system. Only the tallest buildings in the world have them. Plus, Devon towers shape works somwhat as a wind dampener.

I know the U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles (1,018 ft) is designed to withstand an 8.3 earthquake.

But I'd imagine the wind was WAY more of a concern when the Devon Tower was initially being designed than an earthquake; for any, if any, buildings being designed currently for Oklahoma City (700 ft+) they may start considering to design the building(s) to withstand strong winds AND strong earthquakes at the rate we're going.

Atleast we know Devon can withstand a(n) 5.6 earthquake...

I worked on the 30th floor of a building in downtown L.A. and you could feel the whole place sway on a windy day.

I only experienced minor earthquakes while working there, but you could definitely feel the building move.

Channel 9 had a neat shot from their HD tower cam this morning, looking toward downtown. The Devon tower and cranes were rising up above the low cloud layer; pretty impressive.

I was curious as to what the Rotunda and Garden Wing looked like now from the original vantage point.

As you can see, the rotunda still has protective covering on the top due to the construction above.

I bet once they pull that off and natural light comes in from above, that structure will look a lot more transparent and really stand out.

Driving back from Ardmore today I saw the Devon tower just two miles North of Purcell!There is a clearing to the Right on I-35 North,you can see the OU skyline and just barely make out the devon tower!

I drove by the tower during lunch and saw that they have the first angled piece of glass on the crown on the SW corner.

I mentioned this a while ago but it looks like they are starting construction on the connection to the skywalk/Underground system.

The poduim building will have a walkway into the east City Center parking garage (owned by the Oklahoma / Corporate Tower group) and then there will be an enclosed walkway on the third floor of the garage that will connect to the skywalk on the north side of the garage.

It looks like they matched the glass pattern on the connector from the Oklahoma tower to the East garage to what the podium buildings have. Coincidence or pre-planning ?

I worked in a 40 story building in Downtown Dallas (our office was on the 27th floor) and when it was windy you could here the structure creaking in our conference room. We did a space on the 39th floor and there was a large chandelier over the board room table that would sway when it was windy. We always joked that you could tell it was windy outside when there were whitecaps in the toilet/urinal.

Structually, the building is done anyway so that shouldn't make a difference. I think it would take an earthquake that is ridiculously big even by California standards for something bad to happen to Devon tower.

Remember that even when L.A. had a 6.7 quake in '94 where freeways collapsed and there was $20 billion in damage, none of the tall buildings downtown were affected in a serious way.

For years there were limits on tall buildings in L.A. but once modern engineering got a handle on how to build in safeguards, dozens of buildings taller than 40 stories were built and none have ever been seriously impacted.

Generally speaking, skyscrapers are so over-engineered they fare better than smaller and older buildings when it comes to earthquakes and severe weather.

I'm sure of that building no longer being safe. Not now, not ever. Look at how much it swayed. Its done. Are they still keeping the tower and using it? I wouldn't trust it. Not now, not ever. If I ever see Devon Tower sway that much in that way, I will never...ever...not now, not ever...walk within dangerous distance of it.

Does anyone know the max millimeter or centimeter the Devon Tower can sway?

I don't know why developers and builders even allow these towers to sway. They all need to be tightly stiff.
