View Full Version : Laredo's Finally Open
keving 09-17-2009, 10:53 AM Laredo's is located on Classen next to IHOP was open for yesterday.
Lunch was really good and it is beautiful inside. As you can see from the outside, it's a lot bigger. I'll add a better review when I have time.
ddavidson8 09-17-2009, 11:27 AM Was the food the same? Please tell me it hasn't changed.
Froyocraze 09-17-2009, 08:57 PM I will definitely give a try next time I am near by there.
kevinpate 09-18-2009, 07:54 AM hmmm, I wasn't planning on going to okc today, but now .....
Midtowner 09-18-2009, 09:24 AM Went yesterday. Same food. Very limited menu. It's all very basic right now. Building is beautiful though.
PennyQuilts 09-18-2009, 09:40 AM Great!

Would you mind expanding on your review? It would be appreciated.
SoonerQueen 09-20-2009, 02:01 AM We ate there Thursday night. It opened Wednesday. Thursday they had just the lunch menu available and the food was the same as I remembered. We went late in the evening and there was plenty of wait staff there and the service was pretty good. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, and there is more seating than in the old place. I'll be interested to know if they will have specials like Pepe's or the old Laredo's.

Sure. I'm pretty familiar with the menu at the old Laredo's and current Pepe's (in Edmond) as I've been dining at each location regularly for 20+ years. I was eating with my father and a friend.
First, the pre-game goodies. What a lot of folks don't know about the Edmond Pepe's location is that out back is a tortilla/chip making facility. All of the tortillas and chips for these restaurants are locally made and excellent. I think their chips are the perfect texture for corn tortilla chips. I'm a big fan. But back to the service itself -- what a lot of folks probably don't know about local Mexican food is that usually, queso, relish and tortillas are gratis upon request. I do recommend you request all of the above as they're all good free appetizers.
On to the entrees. First as to the basics, the rice and beans, they are no frills, just plain 'ol good. The default is refried beans, but I believe you can also get barracho (sp?) beans upon request (I don't do this). The spanish rice is what it is, a good staple side dish.
As to the entrees themselves, the menu at this point (a few days ago) was pretty limited. Just the old Laredo's lunch specials were available. I decided to try something new, so I ordered a Chimichanga (again, sp?) -- a flour tortilla packed with ground beef and deep fried. It was decent. Remember, we're not talking about the Iguana here, these Mexican restaurants are traditional tex-mex, so don't expect any frills. Just simple, good food.
The folks next to me ordered enchiladas. Their meals appeared to be fine and exactly the same as what they would have had at either the Edmond Pepe's or the old Laredos.
I'm very much looking forward to the new full menu as I understand it will be greatly expanded.
As for the decor? Fantastic. The restaurant, while being pretty cavernous is broken up into a lot of smaller spaces, so noise isn't a big deal unless you (like us) happen to be next to a table full of cackling harpies. The floors had hand-laid mosaic tile. Lots of fine details as to the furniture and even the doors. The structure itself is truly a one-of-a-kind. It's definitely the Taj-mahal of Mexican restaurants we've come to expect after all these years.
The service was great and the food was out to us in less than five minutes.
JohnDenver 09-20-2009, 01:00 PM I went last night with my wife. I won't say we won't go back, but I can't imagine a situation where we will. I got the "Numero 2" and it had three enchiladas and only three enchiladas. No Beans. No Rice. No flavor. Way over priced and under-flavored. On Urbanspoon.com they have a low "like" rating, I should have heeded the warning.
SoonerQueen 09-20-2009, 11:34 PM I thought all the lunches had rice and beans. I think they just forgot to give you yours. I agree that the food wasn't all that great. I wasn't impressed. I like Ted's a lot better. I even like On the Border now. After all the time we waited for Laredo's to finally get open, I was hoping for better food. I'll go again in a few weeks and see if it's better.
ddavidson8 09-21-2009, 10:29 AM So, is the food the same just not what you like in comparison to Ted's and On the Border? Or has the quality of the food actually deteriorated?
JerzeeGrlinOKC 09-21-2009, 10:54 AM <JerzeeGrl turns up nose>
I dunno...how comparatively good can Mexican food really be? Its like a mix-and-match of the same 5 dishes, over and over again. Ted's tastes decent, and yes the service is great, but it bores me to death. Guess we'll go to Laredo's just out of principle, to look at the inside mostly and see if all the hoopla about the new building was worth it. Sounds like from these posts that it is. I do think restaurant ambiance (and service) is half the experience.
Now on the other hand, I do loves me some Zarate's - they serve Peruvian dishes (and other South American cuisine that's hard to find), which are amazingly tasty and something totally different.:chef:
JerzeeGrlinOKC 09-21-2009, 10:55 AM Let me qualify...I don't really like "Tex-mex". I can't say I know what real Mexican food tastes like, I don't even know what it is.

Ah don't thank Jerzigirl is from around here.... Ah luv me some Ted's...
JohnDenver 09-21-2009, 12:29 PM I figured that such an experienced restaurateur would be able to throw out more dishes than just their piddly lunch menu. Also, lunch prices are in line with what I would pay for the same EXACT dinner dish. Normally, lunch portions are smaller and the price is lower. Laredos just charges more for the dinner portion. It is *way* overpriced. The quality is no better than some buffet that would charge $6 for unlimited portions (see Panchos in Dallas).
I am from Dallas and grew up with "Tex-Mex" (people here put that in quotes, so I will too ;) ). This, is Tex-Mex for sure, but the price is the main tipping point. You end up paying what you would at a place that actually cooks your meal, versus what Laredos does, which is scoops up from mass offerings and onto your plate.
I can make their menu with a simple permutation, combination program.
I just made 24 dishes at Laredos!

*high five*
Tex-Mex sucks. When people around here get into pissing matches about which local Tex-Mex place is the best it just blows my mind. Every one of them tastes exactly the same.
soonerguru 09-21-2009, 02:18 PM Ted's blows, and has for some time.

Oh Caboose. Take that back!
SoonerQueen 09-21-2009, 11:16 PM I'm thinking once they are open for a few days the food will be better. I'm not saying it was bad, but what I got wasn't hot at all, and the wait staff while there were plenty of people working, my ice tea glass was empty most of the time.I am hoping they have an enchilada dinner night or a fajitas night like Pepe's does. I'll be going back again in a few weeks and I'll report back again.

metro 09-22-2009, 12:58 PM Ate there at lunch. Reviews seem to be spot on. Food okay, nothing bad, nothing spectacular. I too had the Numero Dos. Food temperate was warm, but not hot like most places bring it out. Queso was average and salsa, less than impressed. I was impressed with the flour tortillas, however I'm on a big authentic Mexican kick here lately and prefer corn. My wife's chicken burrito was excellent, she thought it was just okay. Service started off good, but became lacking. We went at 11am to avoid the main lunch rush. Didn't bring my food out correct and several orders came about 10 minutes after the rest of our party. Building was fantastic. We'll be back, but will wait a month or two.
ddavidson8 09-22-2009, 04:24 PM I too had the Numero Dos.
Was that before or after eating?

Nice.
I live very close to the new Laredo's, but given the reviews in this thread, I'm in no hurry.
Prunepicker 12-04-2009, 06:57 PM Accck! It sounds like Laredo's isn't worth the time of day.
I like Tex-Mex. I also like New Mexico-Mex, my favorite. Cali-Mex and
Arizona-Mex also rate high with me.
I don't give a hoot about traditional Mexican. I'll give it an okay but that's
all it gets. Don't give me that tripe that it uses fresher ingredients. That's
bunk. Mexicans, like Americans, use whatever is in their refrigerator and
pantry. I know, I have a bunch of Mexican friends.
At any rate, I'm sorry that Laredo's ranked so low.
How does Laredo's compare to Los Amigos? I like Los Amigos a lot.
Dustin 12-05-2009, 11:42 PM I tried Laredo's the other day and was very dissapointed.. The cheese sauce tastes like it comes from a can! The enchiladas weren't bad but when I asked for shredded beef and no chili sauce on top, they brought me ground beef enchiladas with the chili. Its too bad because the inside is AMAZING! I just wish I could say the same for the food! 2 out of 5 stars. If you want excellent Mexican (Okla-Mex) food, try Casa Pericos!

Casa Perico is a great Okla-mex pick. | Oklahoma City Restaurants (http://www.eataroundokc.com/2006/casaperico/)
Agreed...Have eaten there nearly every Friday for the past 2 yrs
Prunepicker 12-06-2009, 08:42 PM Is Casa Pericos on N.W. 63rd & west of Meridian?
Easy180 12-06-2009, 09:39 PM That's it...Aint much to look at but the food is excellent and hot every single time we eat there
Dustin 12-08-2009, 01:01 AM Agreed...Have eaten there nearly every Friday for the past 2 yrs
I have been eating there for years as well. I used to eat there when they occupied that area at N. Penn and Memorial where Bravo and PF Changs stands now... mmmMMMM!!! Good memories!
liirogue 01-04-2010, 05:15 PM Is Laredo's closed already? I drove by today at lunch and I thought I saw another name on the sign.
metro 01-04-2010, 07:03 PM Yeah, saw the name change the other day as well
kevinpate 01-04-2010, 07:23 PM Yeah, saw the name change the other day as well
Not been by there. What is the new name? New owners as well?
SoonerQueen 01-05-2010, 03:09 AM I'm sorry they are closed already, but the food wasn't really all that good there. The building is awesome though. Maybe new owners will make it a better place to eat.
jeffery581 01-05-2010, 06:59 AM I don't think it's called Laredo's. I saw a plastic sign covering up the old one with a different name the other day.
ddavidson8 01-05-2010, 07:12 AM That's too bad.
kevinpate 01-05-2010, 08:17 AM Hopefully it won't become a Wal-rrito or Taco-Mart
tburn 01-05-2010, 09:42 AM The new name is Milagros I think.
Menu says "same owners, same menu, new name".
I went with a group of 10 last weekend and we all enjoyed it.
Average Salsa, better than average queso - is not the yellow/orange stuff from a can, tastes like actual mexican cheese.
I had a chile rellano - was tasty, not canned poblano but fresh and stuffed (I chose shredded chicken) ... boraccho beans (w/beer, cilantro, peppers) were great.
others commented the rice was top notch.
They have "mexican tacos" on the menu - soft corn tortillas, onion, cilantro and choice of either asada (steak fajita) or pollo (shredded chicken) ... I only wish they had al pastor (red chile pork)!
They have a mexican coffee - can't think of the name but it includes cinammon and other spices, 2 girls had it and said it was awesome and worth another trip!
We had great service and everyone enjoyed their meal.
The place is gorgeous inside, lots of nooks and great places for small parties to sit.
ddavidson8 01-05-2010, 11:35 AM Looking up then. Nice to hear.
ddavidson8 01-05-2010, 11:36 AM Is Milagros open yet?
flintysooner 01-06-2010, 07:25 AM Oklahoma City restaurant story takes years to tell
By Dave Cathey The Oklahoman
Published: January 6, 2010
My first impulse for writing a column welcoming the 20-teens was to do a retrospective on the 20-aughts.
But rather than a list of trends, restaurants and chefs that made that decade interesting, I decided to discuss a single story that took almost the entire decade to come together. That’s the story of Laredo’s Mexican Restaurant, which now is the story of Casa De Los Milagros Mexican Restaurant.
After five years and two contractors, the enormous hacienda on N Classen Boulevard is open for business but with a new name. But after all he’s been through, owner Julian Gonzalez doesn’t care what the place is called as long as people come in for a visual and flavorful tour of Mexico.
Halfway through the aughts, Laredo’s co-owner and general manager, Julian Gonzalez, whose bloodlines connect him to the city’s first Mexican restaurant chain, El Charro, and its spinoff, El Charrito, thought he’d hit the jackpot.
Chesapeake was in the midst of buying up property around its campus, and Laredo’s was in the target area. Though the transaction meant the end of the old location on NW 63 and its lovely patio, it did leave Gonzalez and his father, Pepe, with significant cash.
After careful consideration, the family decided to reopen its second restaurant. The first restaurant was Pepe’s in Edmond, which opened in 1986.
Early estimates in 2005 were for the new doors to open in six to eight months. Those estimates were a little off. Laredo’s wouldn’t open at 5111 N Classen Blvd. until fall 2009.
That’s not a typo: five years. For most of those years, the gigantic blue sphere that sits atop the restaurant peered over the Interstate 44 railing, causing passers-by to wonder whether it was going to serve cheap enchiladas on Wednesdays or launch toward Mars to search for signs of life.
Though countless restaurants opened and closed during Laredo’s hiatus and many people wondered whether it ever would open, open it did in September.
And just as quickly as it breathed the sweet air of life again, Laredo’s was gone forever.
That’s because just a few months after Laredo’s shuttered in 2005, Cantina Laredo opened in the Penn Square Mall space previously occupied by Garcia’s and Kamber’s before that.
While the name isn’t exactly the same, Cantina Laredo does have corporate money and thinking behind it. It’s an upscale concept owned by Consolidated Restaurant Operations, which also runs El Chico. Gonzalez said he was threatened with a lawsuit if he didn’t change the name of his restaurant.
"We probably would’ve won in court, but it’s cheaper for us to just change the name.”
The new name, Casa De Los Milagros, not only is better but better suited for the space and backstory.
"It means house of miracles,” Gonzalez said.
A walk through the enormous hacienda-style building shows it is an architectural wonder.
"Mexico is an enormous country,” Gonzalez said. "I wanted this place to be like a walking tour of the different regions.”
While construction mostly is finished, the signature patio is being tweaked before spring. The menu is the next major undertaking.
An already large menu with standard Okie-Mex offerings and a smattering of traditional Mexican dishes, such as mole and Caldo de Res, is due additional entrees from the interior of Mexico.
"We’re working on Cochinita Pibil from the Yucatan and Camarones Diablo from the coast,” Gonzalez said. "I want this place to not only tell a story with its interiors but also with what’s on the plate.”
With a more ambitious menu in the works, it’ll be a miracle if it doesn’t succeed.
