View Full Version : The Great State Fair:....what do you remember???
MadMonk 09-10-2010, 08:22 AM The only major prize I won at the fair was a giant, 15-foot long stuffed animal snake. I won it by tossing a ring on a coke bottle. We happened to have come to the fair in my girlfriend's little two-seater Pontiac Fiero. It was a memorable drive home with parts of that snake hanging out the window. If you want to win a prize, do yourself a favor and play the games right before you leave so you don't get stuck carrying a giant stuffed animal around the fair all day.
Jesseda 09-10-2010, 09:11 AM My boss told me the story about the caged women changing into a monkey at the fair, she said she was in front row and when the cage door broke open, she took off running and screaming slapping, stepping on shoving kids and adults left and right to escape, lol she said she never been so scared in her life she ran out of that place and ran a little further when she got out, people where laughing at her when it was all said and done.. I wish the fair had things like that there still.
jmarkross 09-10-2010, 10:42 AM One year, after many years of being gullible and playing all the midway games and losing, I happened onto the game where you throw footballs through tires and win progressively bigger stuffed animals. For whatever reason, I couldn't miss. One after another I threw football after football right through the middle of the tires. Of course I ended up spending about $20 on a giant $5 bear, but it was fun while it lasted and seemed to impress the girl I met there.
You should contact an agent and go to the NFL!
papaOU 09-10-2010, 01:20 PM Mom just love Dan's Indian Tacos. I wonder if we're going... Her foot is hurting again. :-(
Is it a gout?
TeriOKC 09-11-2010, 07:36 AM I remember...
....the smell of the midway, both good and bad;
....the "hootchie kootchie" shows, and being rushed past them by my parents on the midway. I imagine is was some type of extremely tame burlesque. Anyone else remember that?
....feeling somewhat nauseous at some of the painted art that marketed some of the sideshow acts. "Zorva the Depraved!" was one that sticks in my mind. Zorva was hyped as some kind of animal hybrid jungle woman. The depiction I remember was one of her eating a severed arm.
....feeling incredibly panicked at age 10 after my older sisters lured me on to the double ferris wheel and it stalled for what seemed like an eternity at the top one evening.
....being fascinated and a little afraid of the bikers that have always frequented the fair. I remember one group in particular. I was about 8 or 9. A biker moll came up to this big biker dude that she hadn't seen in a long time and not only hugged him, but pretty much started humping around on him. I was shocked, a little scared, and mesmerized!
...seeing a teenage girl bringing what seemed to be her 9 or 10 year old brother and friend to the fair and sending them on their way, after first lighting a cigarette for each of them.

Those big painted canvas signs that signified the tents of freak shows are worth a small fortune now. They often depicted a rather fantasized portrayal of the people who were inside...it is from a bygone era...those of us who were alive and lived in the transition from this world into the sanitized and bland and simpleton world of today...have a rich amount of experiences to bolster our vision of the real world...now on TV the Real World is that God-awful show on MTV that has such revolting semi-humans you keep hoping bad things will happen to them...
papaOU 09-11-2010, 11:16 PM I was around 13 when I spent the afternoon at the "teen area" which had a large tent over a dancing area. Don't remember if they had live music or not. There were a couple of "building" that were showing "underground" films for those 18 and older. Had been dancing with this one female all day and we were getting pretty chummy. Until her boyfriend came along. Cops separated us and I went my way.
Later that year, during the CHHS Homecoming Parade through Capitol Hill, who shows? Yep! He did. Separated by adults and went our separate ways.
That night at the football game he makes a third appearance. Our scuffle lasted longer this time because it was a football game. This was the last time I saw him.
1) what the heck was that girls name? 2) What was his name? 3) Think he worked her over as well? 4)This time of year I become very paranoid! he might still be out there........
Generals64 09-15-2010, 03:01 PM well, I guess since the Race Track is gone the only thing left to do is eat corn on the cob and corn dogs...Right Prunepicker???
PennyQuilts 09-15-2010, 03:53 PM My best friend and I always used to go, alone, starting when we were about 12. I guess our folks figured we would keep each other out of trouble or somehow ward off bad guys. More likely, back in the day they just didn't think of such things.
I recall one year some guy insisted he knew me, called me by my name and claimed we'd met at some party. He was considerably older than me (maybe 18 and I was about 13). He kept following us around, insisting he had met me, before. It was freaky because I'd never met him but he knew my name. When I got home, I realized that my name was monogramed on my purse. Never made that mistake, again.
The barkers always made me nervous. I loved the livestock exhibits, the mobile homes and all that. I once saw a drawf with no legs scooting around on a wheeled board back behind some of the rides. That was freaky. So to speak. Every year we would go to the haunted house - can't remember what it was called but you walked in through a turning cylinder and everything was on the ceiling on on the wall, throughout.
Prunepicker 09-16-2010, 01:24 AM well, I guess since the Race Track is gone the only thing left to

Right-eee-oh! Two of my favorite exhibits!

Was it call the "Fun House"? I remember it, too. There was a
"Haunted House" but I think you road a car through it.
papaOU 09-16-2010, 02:34 AM How about the hall of mirrors? Was not called that I am sure but you know the concept.
In the mid70's my wife and I went with another couple. We were walking along and the friend turned around fast and decked a guy. Seems it was a barker for one of the games. He could not get my buddies attention hollering, so he came on the outside and put his hand on Boyd's shoulder and my bud reacted. Good reason the cops said and just sent us on our way. :fighting3

skyrick 09-17-2010, 07:29 PM Circa 1968-69: Ronnie Kaye had some local bands playing in The Scene, first time I ever saw strobe lights with music. i thought it was pretty cool at the time (14-15 yrs old).
Also, on freak show row, there was a man or woman who would change into a gorilla in front of your eyes, then bust out of the cage. The barker or showman would fire a blank pistol and everyone would scream and run out the tent. David Hodge and I watched a couple of crowds go into the tent and run out screaming, so we decided to go in and dared each other not to run out. The illusion was kind of cheesy, but sort of cool. When the "gorilla" busted out and the guy fired the blanks, we were the only ones left in the tent. "Get outta here, punks!" the guy yelled at us.
Circa 1974-75, 20-21 yrs old. There was an attraction called "Hemisvision", obviously a forerunner of IMAX. There were no seats inside, you had to stand. Before the feature started the guy warned everyone that if they got dizzy or nauseous to just look down at the floor and shield your eyes from the screen. Coolest thing I ever saw at the time! I was with Dave (again) and his pregnant wife, Laura. Poor Laura had to turn her back to the screen she was getting so green.

one less corn dog. We'll see.

Generals64 09-17-2010, 09:30 PM I really hate to admit this one.....When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast I was to go down (for I don't know how long) and work insurance claims. Well, the Fair had just started and it was my wife's birthday so she wanted to go to the fair before I left. Going down the midway there was a big sign and a true Carney "Barker"...See the Man eating chicken only 4 tickets hurry, hurry...I ask my wife what were they talking about....we gave the guy 8 tickets walked the cat walk and sure enough, there was a man .....eating.....CHICKEN from a KFC box.....DUH..................That was only 5 years ago and I was 60 at the time. I just prayed that no one saw me as we scrambled to get out of there....Lmao...........

papaOU 09-19-2010, 11:53 PM I did not notice until this evening and looking to the northwest. Searchlights. The fair has always been aglow with searchlights. No search lights and the great glow the reflection of all the lights on the grounds. I am unable to remember the last trip I took to the fair. I suspect near 10 years. My oldest grandchild ( by the way, my 10th was born Friday afternoon. Another flippin' girl) is the last taken than I can remember. I would wager that our memories are so much better than reality.

We passed by tonight after church and made the same

papaOU 09-20-2010, 01:45 AM Are you Safe? Watching people at the fair. Spot a man with a shaved head, wearing a set of Round House overalls cutoff at the knees. Cowboy boots and knee high-socks. Hold one of those giant beers, to get a refill you must present a permission slip from your substance abuse consular. He's buying something from one of the tables. It's a brand-new set of eight custom made gensui carving knives.
Prunepicker 09-20-2010, 02:49 PM We've decided not to go to the Fair. Can't tell you how much
we'll gripe about how much better it used to be and how we

lt14life 09-21-2010, 03:37 PM Ok I have great memories of the Oklahoma State Fair from the 70's and thats all I have are memories due to Skip Wegner coming in from Texas and ruining it. Seems to be more concerned about how many Restrooms they can cram into the area and just picking up trash Oh and lets not offend anyone with attractions . Its really sad that everything that was fun is now gone, no more dunk the clown . no more freak show row. no more dancing girls, and all of the other great attractions that make a fair are gone forever , its Sad because now all thats their is overpriced food & drinks , so the heart of our great State Fair is lost.
jmarkross 09-21-2010, 03:42 PM Does anyone remember an anti-drug exhibit from around 1970...it was a trailer that had a catwalk along the side to look in through the windows at a man who had abused drugs (so they said anyway--amphetamines, as I recall) and because of it--his body was like silly putty and he was spread out all over the bed he was laying in...it was shocking and very strange. It was more intense than any freak show they ever showed at the Fair...and this was a sort-of "public service" exhibit...

How about the dancers performing atop the Roadrunner Club?
papaOU 09-23-2010, 02:15 PM I found out that the large home that was on the fairgrounds was removed because the maintenance and upkeep was too expensive (sound like urban renewal). Now I have two stories as to the home itself. I always thought it was the "Shepard's" home. From the area where Shepard's Mall is and the surrounding area. Were the last survivors two sisters, twins?
The other building was moved from N.E.4 and Walnut. I remember it being moved but not sure where to.
The building, whichever is located out on N.E. 23 in Nicoma Park. It sits upon the north side of 23 on top of a very large hill.
I am speculating about which building is which.
jmarkross 09-23-2010, 04:06 PM Was there once a "night club" years ago on 10th near the fairgrounds named the Krazy Kat?

Thanks for the info Ray...it was a...shall we say...interesting place in the late 60's-early 70's. Prepared me well for the Condor Club and Miss Carol Doda, when I found myself living in San Francisco some years later...but NOT for the Condorettes...for which there is probably no adequate preparation...

A booth space that used to be $500.00 is now $5,000.00. I will never understand the strategic thinking of some people. You sell more if people can afford it. Also, there is a contract for everything out there. If you are a vendor, you have to buy from those people only....Make Sense????

It used to be a FAIR--a conglomeration of things thrown together willy-nilly, and THAT was the beauty of it. Fortune tellers reminiscent of Maria Ouspenskaya to marvel at. Now, it is all paved, sanitized and politically correct. It is the classic example of things being reduced to the lowest common denominator...then washed clean and prices raised to prohibitive levels. I suspect it will not long endure...it has nothing to offer anymore but rides. Maybe it will become the Traveling Ride-A-Thon with loud discordant truck horns blaring constantly...no more Bobby Vee concerts....
papaOU 10-03-2010, 09:01 PM I went top the Texas State Fair for the Cotton Bowl, something I have done often. Two of the things I look forward to is the Dr. Pepper and brats. Don't think I'll be going there anytime soon. D.P. in the stadium, same at OU. No dang D.P. found anywhere. Realized that D.P. is no longer a "sponsor" of the game or the fair.
What has happened to "tradition"?

Reminds me of being in NYC one dreadfully hot August night (MUCH more oppressive than OK, in my opinion) and wandering into a Bleecker Street Italian-American Festival and getting sausage and peppers there from vendors--a culinary orgy it was--needed near-fatal doses of antacids after midnight, but worth the anguish... :P

whorton 08-29-2016, 01:35 PM Dave spells it out below. . HOWEVER, I am still dismayed about it. Thinking seriously about putting a bug in a few state senators and representatives ears to MOVE THE STATE FAIR TO TULSA. . .
Maybe that would wake up the OKC bunch about what they are loosing.
OK State Fair attendance used to near 1 million every year back in the day.
I could go on a SERIOUS rant here, but I'll condense it to say that the powers-that-be all but destroyed the fair about five or six years ago when someone decided they had to "upscale" it away from its "funnel cake and corndog" image. They brought in a guy from Texas named Skip Wegner to run it, and he just tore the heart out of it - really trying to re-image the fair in the vein of the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Since then, they stopped reporting attendance figures because they're down.
They raised booth rents across the board, chased out a bunch of traditional vendors, and we lost some gems like the Junior Hospitality Sub Sandwich booth years ago. When I asked one vendor where all the traditional "stuff" was, she was nearly in tears, saying "they're wanting to redo the fair, and they're ruining it. Please tell someone. They won't listen to us."
They ruined the Made in Oklahoma bulding with this "Agtropolis" nonsense, ripped out the cannas and the 14 Flags plaza, just tore the place apart. Wegner left several years ago, but the damage has been done. I'm not sure it will ever be the same. We had a chance to implement some necessary improvements, but ripped out vital organs in the process.
Our family used to go to the fair at least twice a year, but now we're doing well to get there once due to the ticket and parking price increases, the elimination of discount tickets once the fair starts...alas...
Understand there may have been some administrative issues that needed to be fixed, but what it was compared to what it is represents a great deal more than an "administrative fix."
Rant off.
Tulsa already has a state fair and draws about the same attendance as OKC.
Bill Robertson 08-29-2016, 01:40 PM Dave spells it out below. . HOWEVER, I am still dismayed about it. Thinking seriously about putting a bug in a few state senators and representatives ears to MOVE THE STATE FAIR TO TULSA. . .
Maybe that would wake up the OKC bunch about what they are loosing.Tulsa already has a fair that's probably as much "The State Fair" as ours is.
Tritone 09-17-2016, 02:44 PM Grandstand, cottonwood fort, monorail (even the last of it) , lights from the NY worlds fair, the metal FFA and 4H buildings (blue and green), B-52 (etc), cannas, BSA headquarters, doughnut-shaped art institute, steam locomotive, planetarium, ride operators with slicked-back hair and the cigs rolled up in their t-shirt sleeves, 89ers ballpark, old mansion. Where are the fair grounds of my youth? Is the "space tower," circa 1967 still there?
rezman 09-17-2016, 06:26 PM In the late 70's early 80's, I worked for Liebman Ice Co and we had an Ice dock just south of the speedway grandstands. We used Craftsman lawn tractors to pull trailer loads of ice, and deliver to vendors all over the fair. I miss trying to fish my way through the crowded rows with the Sears & Roebuck powered rig and getting spit on and slapped in the head. One time, I was trying to get past some people and drove right in front of a carney's booth when he jumped over the counter of his booth and grabbed me, and tried to pull me off the tractor, all the while cussing me for driving in front of his booth and threatening to kick my ass.
....... Ahhh the good old days.
Trisha 09-18-2016, 06:15 PM I found out that the large home that was on the fairgrounds was removed because the maintenance and upkeep was too expensive (sound like urban renewal).
The Building which was at The fairgrounds & now sits vacant in the Harris House moving lt on NE 23rd is The Goodholm Mansion https://caddopubusa.wordpress.com/2012/01/21/forgotten-landmark-goodholm-house-oklahoma-city-ok/

rezman 09-18-2016, 07:33 PM The Goodholm mansion, that now sits on the property out on NE 23rd was moved by there by a house moving company who now owns the house and the property where it sits. They litterally saved the house from being demolished at the fairgrounds.
