View Full Version : The Great State Fair:....what do you remember???
NativeOkie 09-20-2009, 02:41 AM The bread loaves were great.
The thing that freaked me a bit was that guys voice "He's Real, He's alive see him for one dollar."
kevinpate 09-20-2009, 05:47 AM > "He's Real, He's alive see him for one dollar."
That type of phrase would only bother me if there wasn't a fair going on

The thing that freaked me a bit was that guys voice "He's Real, He's alive see

That's great! I remember when it was something like this...
He's Real! He's alive! He's HERE! For one thin dime, that's 10 pennies, 1/10
of a dollar you can see him now!
Thanks for the memory!
papaOU 09-21-2009, 01:00 AM How about the woman who changed into a gorilla (no! not my ex. but it could have been)
All done with mirrors of course.
3 of us ran for our lives when we were found watching what was going on on the back of the stage after crawling under the tent............
Prunepicker 09-21-2009, 01:34 AM How about the woman who changed into a gorilla (no! not my ex. but it could have been)
All done with mirrors of course.
I never saw the woman change into a gorilla. Well, sometimes Prunette
can...
NEVER MIND!
3 of us ran for our lives when we were found watching what was going on on
the back of the stage after crawling under the tent...
I didn't realize the livestock barn was under a tent...
Prunepicker 09-21-2009, 01:38 AM Does anyone besides Gen64 remember the "Club Lido"? I used to think those
ladies were beautiful...
then one night they were all outside posing whilst the barker did his spiel.
I ran to the front to get a good look at the dames. Well... I got a good look
and they all looked like the prostitutes described in Orwell's "1984".
GAG CITY!
I never wanted to go to the Club Lido after that. Not even for free!

Now I remember, you were the one making fun of the Man behind the curtains....In 2005 there was a "Man-Eating Chicken" trailer out there....And, it was a Guy sitting there eating Chicken......They were excused from the Fair on opening night.....but not until they had gotten plenty of money from fair-goers...
papaOU 09-21-2009, 10:20 AM Bonnie and Clyde death car........
Correct make, model and color..........
The bullet-hole decals raised some doubts.............
RealJimbo 09-21-2009, 11:00 AM OK, you guys, I have to chime in here. Me any my buds always went, mostly to tour the midway, eat the food and visit the WKY/OPUBCO area.
We always went to see the "Wall of Death" where they rode vintage motorcycles around and round a vertical wall, defying gravity. It was noisy, smoky and great fun. Then there were the side shows...two-headed calf, alligator man (just a guy with a bad case of psoriasis), monkey woman (really hairy woman in a bikini - GROSS!), exotic snake woman (a middle-aged woman in overalls, high boots and a hat, sitting on a folding chair in a walled booth with rattle snakes all over the floor around her, doing nothing), and the ever-present "little egypt" who danced around in a bikini, supposed driving all the men wild.
It was great fun. One year I happened upon the booth where you try to throw a football through a tire. I threw 12 in a row through the tires and they gave me the biggest stuffed bear and told me I had to leave. There was the swinging ball that you were supposed to make swing back and knock over a bowling pin, except it was impossible, the position the pin was in. The 22 rifles where you were supposed to shoot out a little bitty red letter...I never quite made it. And the baseball toss where you were supposed to knock all three wooded milk bottles off the stand? I never was able to do that either, because - I found out later - the bases of the milk bottles were so heavily weighted that it was almost impossible to do.
All the same, I remember all of this fondly. Now I'm so hungry I want to burn my tongue on a really hot corndog, with lots of mustard.
RealJimbo 09-21-2009, 11:07 AM Well, the little wife won a Blue Ribbon for her quilt....That's First Place PapaOU...
There was a crowd out there at 10:00 a.m. this morning...They were already selling Corn Dogs...you know, the Pronto Pup....30 minutes after you eat that much grease it's Pronto to the Men's room or Ladies room which ever is your preference...there is one cool new attraction...Petting Zoo from Afar...you know, baby Camels, Lamas etc....and for only $5.00 you get to rid a big camel for about 45 seconds...let's see, that about $3,000.00 per day for 14 days...going to buy a camel this week end...anyone got one for sell????
I have a friend up in Bixby, Don Carmichael, who has at least two camels. They are not real friendly critters, but maybe you could rent one.
Generals64 09-21-2009, 03:42 PM I'm probably going to get in trouble for this one but, I remember when the midway was always SOoooooo crowded a friend of mine and I would get in the crowd behind some older men and grabbed the women (backside) behind the men. Lot's of slaps and we had lots of laughs....plus we were the grabber not the slapped.....
grantgeneral78 09-22-2009, 09:18 AM There is a video out showing HOHO t the fair it is a classic. He is asking if anyone has found any ooooo`s and ahhh`s......miss that man!
Jesseda 09-22-2009, 09:25 AM about the women that changed into a gorilla at the fair , my boss tells me the story a lot, she said she and her sister went to it and was at the very front of the scene, and the lady started to change and the cage dropped inches from hitting my boss in the nose, she said she doesnt no what happened next, she was trampling over little kids to escape to the exit she was so scared.
kmf563 09-22-2009, 09:44 AM Thought I would add my two cents worth of info.
First - It hasn't changed much over my time. I like the Toyota stage and free concerts rather than the planes. You can see planes at Tinker. The monorail was awful - it smelled and was stuffy. Glad it's gone. The great people of Oklahoma took care of the side shows - Tiny Tina, the two headed man, giant snake...etc. The fair had nothing to do with that - it became immoral and politically incorrect to host them.
The maps are really easy to read, if you have any questions ask the info people in the red booths all over the place. We'd be happy to help you find anything. If you are looking for a certain vendor, it might take us a minute but we'll find it. We have a listing of every single place in the fair by alphabet and category. It just takes a while to look through all of it. The booklets are free, they include a map and a daily event listing as well as additional info such as specials and vendors.
The agtropolis exhibit in the Oklahoma Expo Building is a huge hit and request. We have more people wanting to go there than any other place on that end of the fair.
Tim O'toole and Clay Bennett have both stated the state fair is a question mark in Maps3. The problem with most of what you guys miss is that inspections no longer deem them safe (monorail is a fire hazard) and per state law, when you remodel or upgrade something in a park, the entire thing has to be up to code and remodeled. It's a bunch of political hurdles that you wouldn't think about when changing one small thing at the fair park.
The home & garden building is now the Administration building. They wanted to bring the staff into the park full time and this is also where first aid and security is housed.
There are always specials online and an event schedule to help you decide when to go. It starts on a Thursday and ends on the following Sunday as always. Tonight is $2 to get in. It's also armed forces day. Thursday if you bring a Dr. Pepper can the ride armbands are only $16.
Our state fair is the only one that provides hospitality rooms for our vendors. They love it. If you get to talk to any of the vendors or car salesmen, they will tell you that by far in their fair travels our fair is the cleanest, cheapest, and friendliest fair. They enjoy it and look forward to coming here every year.
I volunteer every year and love it.

Hey, if you read through this thread you'll see that most of us have enjoyed the fair ALL of our Lives...we all have quirks that bug us but all in all we are very appreciative of the Great Stat Fair of Oklahoma. Granted, there are some gripes but most of us are remembering the past. I agree that the Horse barns need to be kept to perfection as that industry brings in mega bucks for OKC. And yes, the fair this year seemed to be quite clean against other years......But, the question all in all is where did our child hood days go....Answer :......In the past and boy do we have a pass to remember....Has the fair committe every think about an historic preservation??? they had one in Hutchinson< kansas just three weeks ago....People were all laughing and enjoying being a kid again...How about you????
oneforone 09-22-2009, 02:05 PM Overall... I had fun their this past Saturday. My only complaint was the traffic situation. They need to find a better way to manage the traffic flow in and out of the fairgrounds.
A good start would be desingated entrances and exits to keep the back up from happening on the outer streets. Reno, May and 10th all need to be redesigned for high traffic flow into the fairgrounds.
Other than that, I had a great time. The booths that bring heavy traffic had mulitple locations and there was plenty of stuff to see. I think they are still in transition from the Skip Wagner disaster. I like the cleanliness and the visablity of police. Not to mention the people watching was just a barrel of laughs. I am going to go back before the end of the week. I have to grab a turkey leg and another pork chop sandwich before it's over.
Thunder 09-22-2009, 07:26 PM About the traffic issue, I'm disappointed in OKC for not opening the May's onramp to the I-40. It's still closed. Thankfully, the offramp opened in time.
Thunder 09-22-2009, 07:33 PM The great people of Oklahoma took care of the side shows - Tiny Tina, the two headed man, giant snake...etc. The fair had nothing to do with that - it became immoral and politically incorrect to host them.
I think I know who you are talking about. Two years ago, mom and I was walking by a booth. I saw a sign, which I thought said 2" (inches), but when we entered, it was actually a 2' (feet) lady. I felt bad, because I did not want her to think we were making fun of her. We shook hands and talk, then left. I think she was fine with making money (thousands each day), because people will naturally be curious what will be in the booth.
Another booth, was a half lady half snake. I knew it was fake, but I went in just to see the snake primarly. Huge snake, but I wonder how they treated the snake. Probably knocked him out cold, since the head was hidden under the hole.
I've never seen a 2-headed man/men, so if there was one, then I know it is fake. 2 guys in one huge wrap around costumes to make it look like they was conjoined. Or was they actually conjoined? Never seen it.
papaOU 09-22-2009, 11:58 PM about the women that changed into a gorilla at the fair , my boss tells me the story a lot, she said she and her sister went to it and was at the very front of the scene, and the lady started to change and the cage dropped inches from hitting my boss in the nose, she said she doesnt no what happened next, she was trampling over little kids to escape to the exit she was so scared.
That always happened. Men, women and children out like a flash.
That way maybe you would forget it was a fraud and complain...
Do they still have it?
Prunepicker 09-23-2009, 12:50 AM We go to the Fair for 2 exhibits. Whatever is in the Oklahoma building, but
not the boring agtropolis. Then we go to the Modern Home building to see
the baking, canning, etc. The food is okay but not great and certainly not
anything to get excited about. The corn dogs are still good. It's way over
priced for what you get.
As I said before, if it wasn't for the $1 and/or senior days we wouldn't go to
the fair at all. Too much cost for too little. Make that way too little.

When dealing with a subject from the past and comparing it to today, were things that great or is that how our minds want to remember them.
Not that I say that is true it's just a question that I wonder about at times.
But then again, never question the Prunepicker

Even 10 years ago it was better. More exhibitors, more MADE IN OKLAHOMA!
Good grief! It was packed.
Why wasn't the monorail upgraded instead of destroyed?

I agree they have made so many mistakes out at the fair it is rediculous, something is to be said for tradition. Some people are to short sighted, and they are fair executives.
RealJimbo 09-24-2009, 02:23 PM @KMF563 - Thanks for the positive input, but reading the complete thread, I'd say you are outvoted. The things that made the fair memorable to me (born 1948) are now gone, including my youth and energy.
That giants, dwarfs and "freaks" are no longer exhibited due to political correctness never crossed my mind. It always struck me as poor taste and/or bad judgement to show them and charge admission.
But give me corn dogs and funnel cakes, cars and motorcycles, horses, cows, chickens, and pigs, quilts, jelly, prize vegetables, and big crowds in the rain and I'll be happy.

It's ok. I'm usually outvoted on everything. haha. I'm used to it.
I think I'm the only person in the world who embraces change. I'm one of those people who gets rid of everything at home too. If I don't use it in 6 months, I throw it out. My mind holds my memories, not objects. But I understand how people think the fair has changed so much over a 50 year period. I mean wow, I'm sure it has changed quite a bit. I bet the trip to get to the fair has changed as well. And the music they hear while there. Many many things must be different.
I'm curious if anyone knows the last year the fair was held on Douglas Blvd before it was moved to the current location?
Thunder 09-24-2009, 05:00 PM I'm curious if anyone knows the last year the fair was held on Douglas Blvd before it was moved to the current location?

It has always been at the same location, the fairgrounds, off of May all my life, including last year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was held behind the old Douglas High School off Eastern (Now M.L. King Blvd). The 1957 Semi-Centennial was the first time they had anything out there during the Summer time.... and then the fair was in the Fall of '57. I remember the Semi-centennial pretty well....

There are many sites you can go online and find stories, post cards, pictures....
all at the location on Eastern.
papaOU 09-24-2009, 10:24 PM Here it is another fall beginning. Lacking and yearned for is the days of old.......
No roaring crowds and bands from Capitol Hill or St. Mary's.......
No searchlights in the sky from the fair. No glow over the fairgrounds from the dust being stirred from the parking lot and the ground as a result of the crowd....
Less dust because there are no car races, stock, midget or whatever. From my house you could hear the roar of the cars as if they were racing somewhere around the Canadian or the Downtown Air park.
Are you sure fall has begun???????

Change is fine so long as it's good. I'm all for it being cleaner but as far as
going there for a good time, it stinks. They should have fixed (read changed)
the parking problem and left the fair alone.
1953 was the last year the fair was on N.E. 10th and N. Eastern.
The current location started in 1954. There was a lawsuit against the
construction company for not having it ready in time for the Fair.
Prunepicker 09-25-2009, 02:37 PM Prunepicker, what do you expect from the state fair? How much more do
you want?
More "Made in Oklahoma" products and venders in what was once the
"Made in Oklahoma" building. There were 3 times as many before the new
regime. Put "Made In" back on the Oklahoma sign and fill it to the brim with
Oklahoma venders and products!
The same goes for the other buildings. They don't have nearly as many
either. That was one of the best things about going to the fair.
More food venders.
The AGtropolis should be in the Livestock barn. If it's so great nobody will
mind going there.
grantgeneral78 09-27-2009, 09:34 PM that had to be the best 4.00 root beer I- have ever had!
papaOU 09-28-2009, 12:25 AM One of the things I always did was to grab a foot long and jug of root beer from the A&W stand.
I would also take a tour through the food-row that ran north from the entrance to the midway. Always checked what local organizations were there and were serving. At the north end was the original sausage, pepper and onion stand. Had to get one for sure.
always at least one corn-dog and a caramel or candied apple. At least one ham sandwich for the Jr. Hospitality stand. A Dan's Indian Taco was a must.
After that it was hit or miss. Pork chop sandwich. Maybe some alligator. Some taffy to take home. Cinnamon rolls were not too high on my list. Still don't know why people rave about them.
Did not play very many games. When I did it was for cigarettes.
The Made in Oklahoma Bldg, the OPUBCO, the International Bldg and maybe a couple of others were great. Some of those booths in the "Kitchens Bldg" were great for buying spices and such.
Where I usually spent most money was the International Bldg. They had some great vendors there.
Lots of great memories of old. I just have not been drawn to the fair in years. You used to know where everything was going to be because little changed from one year to the next. Is it still that way.
I have 2 13yearold granddaughters and neither cared about going to the fair. With something like that if you can't keep the kids interested you are on your way out.

Generals64 09-09-2010, 03:20 PM Well, once again "The Great State Fair" of Oklahoma is coming around the corner....Drove by there yesterday and it sure looked strange without the Fairgrounds Raceway. I also noticed that the PRCA Rodeo (not the finals) is coming back to OKC. The guy in charge even apologized to OKC for leaving to begin with.
I guess Prunepicker is getting for the Knifes that "slice and Dice" and the Corn Dogs....PapaOU...the beer hut is going to be there also. You and Prunepicker could get together and sing a Karaoke duet at O'Briens. I'm sure all of the crowd will show if you guys let us know the date....
Prunepicker 09-09-2010, 08:19 PM I don't do croaky. It's too dangerous. Never been inside O'briens.
However, the Corn Dog exhibits will be hit hard.
To bad we've have all that wasted space for that agrapolis. It

a side room of the MADE IN OKLAHOMA building where the
venders are hidden.
Achilleslastand 09-09-2010, 10:20 PM I recall once in the mid70s i went into one of the places on the midway where right before your eyes a chick turns into a gorilla then busts out of the cage scaring everyone half to death. Good times......

Are you being funny? I honestly can't tell since I've not detected
a sense of humor from you. I continually examine the State Fair
artifacts I've collected over the years. Maybe you think I'm
kidding.
At any rate, the photos of the Blue Angels, the UAW yard sticks,
silly political doo dads, taste samples, lizards, goldfish, hanging

of as junk. I know why I took every single piece and remember
it like it was yesterday.

ljbab728 09-10-2010, 01:04 AM Are you being funny? I honestly can't tell since I've not detected
a sense of humor from you. I continually examine the State Fair
artifacts I've collected over the years. Maybe you think I'm
kidding.
At any rate, the photos of the Blue Angels, the UAW yard sticks,
silly political doo dads, taste samples, lizards, goldfish, hanging
out with girls I'll never see again, etc... can hardly be thought
of as junk. I know why I took every single piece and remember
it like it was yesterday.
I have know idea what you're talking about. I really don't.
LOL. Obviously you're the one without a sense of humor. I always get home with stuff that someone handed me and I wonder why I ever took it except to just be polite. Most of it goes in the trash. If you are a hoarder and want to save everything you get, more power to you.

I don't. Period.
Prunepicker 09-10-2010, 01:12 AM Well, once again "The Great State Fair" of Oklahoma is coming
around the corner... Drove by there yesterday and it sure looked
strange without the Fairgrounds Raceway. I also noticed that the
PRCA Rodeo (not the finals) is coming back to OKC. The guy in
charge even apologized to OKC for leaving to begin with.
I guess Prunepicker is getting for the Knifes that "slice and Dice"
and the Corn Dogs... PapaOU... the beer hut is going to be there
also. You and Prunepicker could get together and sing a Karaoke
duet at O'Briens. I'm sure all of the crowd will show if you guys
let us know the date...
Let's get the southside together for a day at the fair. That'll
be fun. I'm tasting Dan's Indian Tacos and the Corn Dogs
right now.
Tell Mom, Frisky and Tall Girl. We'll have a blast.
Thunder 09-10-2010, 02:33 AM Mom just love Dan's Indian Tacos. I wonder if we're going... Her foot is hurting again. :-(
jmarkross 09-10-2010, 03:20 AM Can you still find anyone there who gives away those flat plastic things with a round ball on the end that you use to dial the telephone with? They usually come with advertising burnished in...and--do they still have con-men who hawk various types of vegetable choppers/slicers at a awning-draped kiosk with an enraptured crowd of folks who listen to their pitch?
RealJimbo 09-10-2010, 06:46 AM One year, after many years of being gullible and playing all the midway games and losing, I happened onto the game where you throw footballs through tires and win progressively bigger stuffed animals. For whatever reason, I couldn't miss. One after another I threw football after football right through the middle of the tires. Of course I ended up spending about $20 on a giant $5 bear, but it was fun while it lasted and seemed to impress the girl I met there.
