As it does me. Of course these people have no regard for human life, much less unattended property. We are becoming a minority it seems because in many cities this is considered "art." Yeah! Like the pictures and sayings on toilet walls!! %@#$&

frank zappa's 200 motels

Just kidding (I think). There are so many to chose from. Only problem is several "complete" films are only partially good. Such as the "Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc." The best of the film is after she has been taken prisoner.

I am unable to choose between 2.

"A Man for All Seasons"
"Beckett"

Those are great movies....
I think Thomas More was a great example of a real government official trying to live in both the temporal and a spiritual mindedness. With true intention of serving both "God and Ceasar".
Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?, though it was wrong in historical account, I speak it often enough in my own dealings...winks

Ben Hur, The 10 Commandments and other "religious" films are much better when viewing the original silent version. At least I think so.

But I enjoy silents.

Doug Loudenback

Agnes of God wasn't about Baptists, so, as a recovering Baptist, you have no worries, gmwise ... you get a free pass from/on/about this movie.

It has been a long time (years) since I've seen it, but I do have a general impression that it was an exceptional move. But, then, I'm one who is of the view that if Anne Bancroft is a main actor (and she was the principal actor in this movie, if memory serves), you know it's got to be a good flick.

I SAY THIS knowing full well that, while you may be in a "recovering Baptist," I tend to personally align myself with Dustin Hoffman's point of view when he said, in Little Big Man,

"... and that was the end of my religious period."
No recovering for him, just moving on. Perhaps you remember the scene and line in that classic movie that I have in mind.

papaOU

Being raised as a baptist you are allowed to "avoid it like the plague."

It deals with Catholicism.

This may get me excommunicated from OKCTalk and the monthly Coit's meeting, but I find the "Last Temptation of Christ" a very good film. I read the book back in the 1970's and found it a good read as well.

The movie is played regularly on cable. Was just on the other night.

I can't remember the last drive-in movie I saw much less the first!

The movie I probably attended the most was "Woodstock". Played at the Airline often. Two or three carloads of us would go and since the place was dying we almost always sat on the ground.

Since we were young long haired youth (at least I was) taking an enhancement before going added to the film. Other times we took different forms of mind altering substances with us. Those smokable and drinkable (wine or beer), Yes alcohol is a mind altering substance.

Per my 1951 Polk's Directory there is no theater in the 1000-1400 block. The May was located at 1515 N May.
At 1212 N Pennsylvania shows to be Penn theater. If you ha
ve other theater's and can't remember the name I will glad to check for you. Just remember it's a 1951 directory.

More interesting stuff. The Continental was one of three. The one in Denver is still around, but now a part of a multiplex. The exterior was changed and the lobby is gone, but the original auditorium still exists. This seems like a great move to me. I hate to see the lobby gutted, but it's better than tearing down the whole thing. CinemaTour - Cinemas Around the World - Continental 10, Denver CO (http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/2838.html)

Oooh, that last link looks so cool! I'll have to take a closer look later.

Since you like movies (as I do) I guess you've seen my older article on downtown movies (still more to be done ... sometimes I'm slow to finish things!) ... but just in case you missed it, here's the link: Doug Dawgz Blog: Let's Go Downtown To The Movies (http://dougdawg.blogspot.com/2006/07/lets-go-downtown-to-movies.html)

ON EDIT: I started looking through that www.scridb.com link ...spot checking, took a look at the Circle Theater. This is the page it shows:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/capitolhill/circle_scribd_com.jpg

Note that it shows the theater's date of ending operation as 1950.

In 1941 or 1942, the Circle's name changed to the Capitol.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/capitolhill/circle_1942_04_12.jpg

It was still using name as late as 1962 ... here's a 1961 [edit note: I originally said 1968 instead of 1961] ad:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/capitolhill/circle_1961_08_25.jpg

At some point, the theater became the Capri:

Yes, I've been through that site. Great job.

Prunepicker, the Continental was sadly torn down at least 3 years ago. It was in a terrible state of shape, and probably had to go, but still it's sad. I was able to get into the lobby at one point, as were many others. It was basically empty and very, very dark. Lots of graffiti and I would guess some squaters at some point.

Here's how you post a photo.
1. Select "Reply" or "Quote"
2. On the tool bar there is a yellow square with mountains and a sun. It the
14th image on the 2nd line of the tool bar. Select it
3. Enter the URL to your photo and select OK.
4. If the photo is extremely huge you'll have to reduce the size of it with
an editor.

Saw the Bible at the Continental. Circa '66? One of those "coat and tie" evenings. Didn't get to wear my little suit often outside Sunday church.

I seem to remember that Continental didn't even allow refreshments inside the auditorium. That may or not be true, but I wasn't quite 10 and it's darn near 50 years later ;)

A theater south of 13th and May Ave? Do you mean north of 13th? The May was at 1515 North May. It was an antique mall up until fairly recently. It's now vacant. That was a great old theater. It was simply The May in its heyday and then "May Avenue Theater" as a dollar house in the 80's.

I found a picture on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/25726169@N03/3173397343/in/pool-59846932@N00) and here's the Cinema Treasures listing (http://cinematreasures.org/theater/15757/).

Wow, this is worth the edit, I found an old picture of The May theater in that CT thread - http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q12/kencmcintyre/may.jpg

Hey, I saw the Bible during that time, too. We may have seen each other!
Who was your parole officer?

I'm not sure about when it first opened, but in the late 60's you could take
refreshments into the theater. The big thing was the "Intermission". Even
if the movie didn't have one built in, they'd stop the show for 15 minutes.
Theaters relied upon concession sales.

No. It's south of N.W. 13th and it's not the May Theater, which is at 1515
N. May. The building is still there and, like the May, it's an antique store.
You can throw a rock and hit it from Reed Park, which is on N.W. 13th and
N. May. You can't throw a rock from Reed Park and hit the May Theater.
The area where they had the seating and screen is still there and so are
the curtains.

Jack Hwang had his Tae Kwon Do school there in the 60's. He had "Judo"
written (vertically) where the name of the theater was. I'm surprised the
the older members of this thread don't remember where Hwang's was before
he moved. It's where everybody in the 60's said the took Judo and got a
brown belt. LOL!

The May Theater was still showing movies at that time.

Prune, I can't figure out what the url is of my pictures so I can't put them up. There is a big ol' yellow sigh with red letters saying ANTIQUES over the finial but if you get to the south end of the building and look up at the sign you can see the old green, yellow-gold and red vitrolite. I used to be POed that it was always covered up until I saw it uncovered. The bottom portion was all gone and looked terrible. When there today, ask them if they know anything about the bldg's history.

Doug,
How do we upload photos and show them?

HELP!
Well, there may be different ways to do it ... I don't recall whether there is a place in THIS forum to upload pics to (and then link to them in a post) but Martin or another administrator could answer that.

What I do (and what PapaOU did) was to create a Photobucket account ... you can do that for free ... it is a part of Google ... other internet places do the same thing but their names are out of my head right now.

With a Photobucket (for example) account set up, you can create folders in that account (or not, but organization is good). Anyway, you then follow the instructions in the on-line Photobucket (or other) account for uploading your images into your on-line account.

Once you've done that, you can then "link" to a particular Photobucket address so that the image shows up in a message here.

You would insert the exact internet address for the image inside a pair of "IMG" codes here ... and opening and a closing, thusly: internet picture address ... case isn't important for the "img" parts but it is for the internet address.

Photobucket also has code options which speed up the posting ... in this case, inserting the IMG codes for you ... below, I've selected an example and with the item selected, pressed Ctrl+C to copy.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/movies/photobucketexample.jpg

Then, here, I'm pasting that code which includes the address ... Ctrl+V ...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/movies/tower_movies_1969_12_17.jpg

Does that help? I'll be away from the computer the rest of the afternoon but I'll check back I return if you have more questions.

By the way, it's best that you resize your images to the size you want before uploading. Most digital cameras produce an image that is much to large for internet posting ... 800 px wide is a nice size but you'll have to be the judge of that.

Here's what I found out today. It's on N.W. 12th and N. May, thanx
ddavidson8. Much to my chagrin, it wasn't a movie theater. The people in
the store didn't know much about the history of the building but were
helpful.

The large room I talked about, that looked very much like a theater, was a
lodge of some type. Maybe a Moose, IOOF or Masonic. I believe the
entrance to it was where the antique shop's sign is, or where Jack Hwang
had his studio. The far north part was a drugstore. Next to it, or down
one door, was a Singer Sewing Shop. On the far south end was a Sheet
metal business and later a bar. There was a small grocery. The very back
large room was a wood working shop. The owner of the antique store said
they still have sawdust falling from the ceiling.

There must be some photos of that corner.

I was beginning to think it was a silent movie house that closed in the 40's.
The curtains are no longer there.

This corner is going to be my project.

area... I saw it today when I went to check about the theater...
There... Doug, you can be on the celebration of this one... Steve... good
article also... Prunepicker, you can bring the Hot dogs...

I cruised Sandtown last week while getting my coffee beans at Coffee Dan's.
When is the celebration? I'll definitely bring the hotdogs! Last Monday I
bought 50lbs of them for $5 and they're in the garage as we speak. I wish I
could find a way to refrigerate them.

Oh yeah, I ate at Cattlemen's today....Hmmmmm...How did you like the nice Entrance Sign that someone had put up at Sandtown????

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------O.K., I also went by there and found out that it used to be a swimming pool with a three story high dive but was later converted to a go-cart track.....Just kidding....you have my interest up and I remember (vaguely) going out to eat at the same place where the antique store is located now. You would probably find out the name if you could get behind the antique store sign....Speaking of which one or more of us needs to go and try to save the Glen's Parking sign. Someone is building a small strip center there....Now, if you go further North (about 13th) you'll see a white store front that has Sporting Goods still on the front of the building. That was Fay Horaney's Boat shop many years ago.....The parking lot to the south was where he had his boats that were for sell. The May Theater is owned by Bill and Judy Howard. Judy and my wife are friends...It is as I just noticed for Sale/Lease. If you then go around the corner on 16th st. to the West about a block (now a Super Mercado) there is an old Safeway store that has been everything you can imagine. Used to be a wonderful neighborhood there....

Nope, there is nothing behind the ANTIQUES sign. I have a very clear picture of the whole thing with nothing over it. Just vitrolite and broken bricks there.

And I was reminded that when that back area was a woodworkers shop, it was my wife's ex-husbands shop. He mostly restored antique furniture. That was 20 or 25 years ago. For many years (at least the 80s) most of the building was Oklahoma Scenic (Stage props, curtains, etc).

I'm not to worried about the hotdogs. The flies are keeping the heat of of
them.

Since that shoplifting incident, I'm not allowed in Jim's. I swear, I never
stole nuthin'! There was this South East Cheerleader who...

Why do you tell me Cattlemen's AFTER you eat there? Foul! C'mon, I can
only eat one Presidential Porterhouse. I'm a cheap date, unlike soonergi...

Never mind...

I hate to bring this up, but multiplexes can have some nostalgic value to me. I especially like the ones like Almonte 6 and Northpark 4. Anyone have memories or photos of these? I know Northpark is still opened as a 7 screener I think, but I'm more nostalgic about the 4-plex. I have vague memories of the Continental (Savannah Smiles and The Aristocats), but every other movie going experience for me was in the 2 screen plus cinemas.

There's a place across the street from Langstons on Exchange that looks like it could have been a theater, anybody know anything about it?

I remember when Almonte Theater was not. In fact it wasn't even part of
the Almonte shopping center. We lived a few blocks from it and NEVER
went to a movie there. The only time I ever went to a movie at the Amonte
was for "Platoon", a lousy movie. Correction, make that an unbelievably BAD
movie. It was almost as bad as "End of the Spear", which was very possibly
the most awful mover ever made. I never went back.

Rudy's Red Bud was a regular stop for the baseball crowd until Billie's
Tastee Freez opened. Mom wouldn't shop there because it was too
expensive. We'd go to Jim's IGA on S.W. 44th and S. May.

As for North Park, I went to every movie from 1978 until 1980. I have no
idea why. It didn't matter how lousy the movie was, and there were a lot of
lousy movies, I'd go. The concessions were awful at North Park. They were
probably the most awful of any theater I ever attended.

I still have no idea why I went to movies at the North Park.
