View Full Version : Iron Star
king183 11-26-2010, 03:42 PM I like Iron Starr--I used to go there once a week. Recently, however, the food has not been too hot (literally) and the service is lacking. I've been in there 3 times in the past month. Each time, it took about 10 minutes for a waitress to come take our drink orders, and then 10 minutes to actually get the drinks and order. I see the wait staff hanging around the bar just talking to each other and playing on their phones while we wait. It's ridiculous. The food is still pretty good, but sometimes the meat tastes dry, as if it's been sitting out waiting for someone to order or like it's the last batch of the night they're going to cook. Pretty disappointed. I'll go back and see if the past 3 times were just an odd aberration, but I'm not hopeful.
king183 12-05-2010, 07:26 PM Update: I went back to the Iron Starr location on Campus Corner and the service was noticeably better. The food was very good, though the meat was still a little dry. I will return again soon and see if it continues to improve.
I expect it will because someone from the Good Egg Group contacted me directly after seeing my complaint and wanted to see what he could do to make the situation better. That shows me these guys take their customers seriously and are serious about creating a good dining experience. That's highly encouraging-- and, in my opinion, rare in today's dining industry. Having visited some of their other restaurants and enjoying the food and atmosphere immensely, I'm confident the campus corner location will continue to improve.
FlounderinDC 01-11-2011, 12:57 PM Iron Starr is closed in Norman. Just couldn't make it. I enjoyed it and hate to see it go. I'll just have to go to OKC now.
okclee 01-11-2011, 01:01 PM This is a surprise, I thought they were doing very well.
kevinpate 01-11-2011, 02:18 PM Campus Corner can be a cruel mistress.
blangtang 01-11-2011, 02:25 PM If memory serves, they recently had a groupon for the norman location only. Glad i didnt buy any!
Andrew4OU 01-11-2011, 02:29 PM Wow, that's a bummer.
Bigrayok 01-11-2011, 03:12 PM Probably too expensive for college students, plus I am not sure how popular BBQ is with college students, especially upscale BBQ like Iron Starr. I have seen a lot of restaurants come and go on Campus Corner. During breaks and even in the summer it can be a ghost town. I like Campus Corner. I have been going to Othello's, Toto's, and Victoria's since the 1980's.
Bigray in Ok
MyJRNY 01-11-2011, 03:13 PM The Wimgo Deal will still be good at the OKC location. No worries on that.
dankrutka 01-11-2011, 07:00 PM Really sad. It was a great place to go...
jbkrems 01-11-2011, 10:38 PM Yeah, this is sad. I had many good visits there. Too bad.
soonerfan_in_okc 01-11-2011, 11:18 PM damn. I go to OU, and me and my roommates love that place. Their ribs are top notch. This pisses me off, now my only choices are burritos or sandwiches on campus corner.
kevinpate 01-12-2011, 06:54 AM Or, ditch CC and keep the Q ....
Ribs, etc. at Van's on N. Porter (less than 1.0 miles from campus corner
Ribs, etc. at Sooner Legends at SW 24th and W. Lindsey (less than 2.0 miles from CC)
Ribs, etc. at Ray's on W. Lindsey(even closer to CC than Sooner Legends)
There are other spots around town as well, but these three are close to campus and you can't go wrong at them.
BG918 01-13-2011, 11:09 AM That's surprising. I wonder what restaurant will fill that space? BBQ was something I thought could do really well in Campus Corner. Tuck - what happened??
John1744 04-18-2015, 05:06 PM What's the story with the slight name change from Iron Starr to Iron Star? They had a website update and the whole nine yards with it. Home - Iron Star (http://ironstarokc.com/)
Urbanized 04-18-2015, 07:54 PM Just a guess: they probably got tired of folks mistakenly assuming that Wade Starr was involved, especially in light of his recent bad press. Easy change, and actually feels more authentic and less gimmicky, anyway.
Canoe 04-18-2015, 09:46 PM I wishthey would bring back the watermelon sweet ice tea.
BBatesokc 04-18-2015, 10:15 PM wish they would have chosen a real bbq place for the ford center
with iron star in there, they might as well change it to the saab or audi center
Personally, I'm thrilled Iron Star will be there! Consistently excellent food.

We have been going through a slight rebrand of the concept. More urban/industrial and less country. Pop in and take a look...new ceiling tile, bar redo, new tables, new chairs on their way and several other upgrades. The sign will be last. Glad someone noticed!

Ha! Not the case, but good guess. If we ever get tired of something, hopefully we don't wait 12 years to make a change. We try to upgrade our restaurants and make small changes to the interior every 8-9 years.
Urbanized 04-19-2015, 08:37 AM Cool. Glad you weighed in. Also, I've been in a number of times recently, and I agree that the place looks/tastes better than ever.

Interesting. I've been there a couple of times and it already felt less "country" than the typical BBQ restaurant. I should get back there soon to check out the changes.

Great to hear! Iron Star is always a favorite of mine, will have to check it out soon.

Did you add an iron star? I always found the lack thereof to be strange.
I'll have to come in to find out!
Mr. Cotter 04-21-2015, 04:39 PM Started noticing some changes a few months ago: good looking new logo on the menus and shirts, and noticed the new tables last Sunday. I didn't notice the spelling changed (I never noticed it was "Starr").
The food has always been consistently good. I usually stick to the chicken and pork, but even the brisket has been good the last few times my wife has ordered it.
TheTravellers 04-22-2015, 04:58 PM Ah, that explains it, we went there to use a gift card that they sent to us after a bad experience, and were a bit less than thrilled (and no, not posting this to get another gift card :p ). Quail breast apps didn't have enough glaze or "salad" with them, didn't get served cornbread with our entrees, and maybe a couple of other minor things, but service was better than it had been and the food still *tasted* good, just seemed like it had started to "cheap out" with less portions, less quality, etc. Glad the Coop Gran Sport Porter was back on tap, though. We'll still go back, but not for a while...
Anonymous. 12-11-2015, 09:38 AM Finally had this since the 'remodel' and it was fantastic. Went with a group of 8 without a reservation and they were very accommodating.
Service was great, had a younger server too - he knew what he was doing. Food was good, sampled all the meats on platter, then chose the smoked turkey and the sausage trio. Meats were all very flavorful. Baked beans and Mac and Cheese were my sides. I must say the mac and cheese is pretty lackluster, but not bad.
Overall good experience and will be returning more often.

The mac & cheese tastes like it's gotten greasier over the years... used to be a go-to, now we usually don't order it. Only complaint I have.

Hate to hear that.... I haven't been there in several years but I remember the mac and cheese being one thing I really enjoyed.
dankrutka 04-30-2016, 10:35 AM I went last Sunday for dinner after the Marathon and it had been a couple years since I'd been... It was so good. One of the best meals I've had recently. I had a brisket sandwich with fancy mac. It's back in rotation for me.
2Lanez 05-02-2016, 10:26 PM Was there that night too. Consistently one of the best meals in town. Still wish they didn't drop the second R...
sooner88 05-02-2016, 10:44 PM Saw there's $12 rack of ribs M-Tr with your keep it local card this month
Went last night and the brisket was like eating rubber. Perhaps I've had too much good brisket and know what it should taste like. I couldn't pull the brisket apart at all.
The drinks were great but this is no longer a good BBQ restaurant
