Hardigree's Donuts on Main and Western next to the Vocational School building....You didn't know that that building was an old Vocational School did you?????Also, Dan's Donuts they were located next door to Bob Poole's Grocery Store on the North East Corner of 44th and S. May.....Did you remember Bob Poole's????They (the donuts) were 50 cents a dozen or three dozen for a Dollar......Fresh, and hot to your front door....."I always said when the people came to the door when they would ask how much????I'd say 3 Dozen for a dollar......most of the people were still sound asleep and would dish out a dollar to get rid of that "Pesky" little kid.....I would make about $3.00 a day and all the donuts I could eat.....Then I'd bring home the ones we didn't sell for my Mom and Sisters......Miss those days....$3.00 would equal a NEW Model car and Glue... sometimes new Model Paint.....a dollar or so left over for the movies at the Chieftain Theater......You can tell I was a money saver.....I knew what my budget was.....
In the early fifties that grocery store on the N.E. corner of 44th and May was Rhoads Grocery, also on the N.E. corner of 44th and Walker. Kay Rhoad's (married to deceased Bobby Murcer) Dad!! That was probably before you moved into that neighborhood?

Just east of Ernie's DX and Burl Higgins' Barbershop (I think he called it the Knob Hill Barber.) Burl was studying to be a lawyer; does anyone know if he made it?

Do you remember the huge box he'd carry in?
How about when he'd use a mirror, propped
against his tool box, to adjust the set from
the back?

And Dad's reaction to the bill!

How about some the rigging that needed to be done since the sets were not cheap. Our set got to where the tuner/station dial (For you youngsters there were no remotes. Besides, I think we only had stations 4, 5, 9, 13 & maybe 14) would not "hold" on its own so we had to wedge a butter knife in the thing to watch programs.

Let's add that our kids will never know a life where all the t.v. stations went off the air late at night. Anybody know what time?
So no all night t.v.

I am originally from Ardmore.....and when my cousins were growing up their mother would come home after work and spank them unmercifully. The reason???? her best was was THE operator and what you did was just give her the number ( i.e. 199) and she would plug you in to that number. She would also listen to their calls and whenever something was wrong, here came the belt...One time, one of them was bragging to a friend about "Stealing" certain items from the Drug Store.....The operator called the store and had them charge the items to my aunts account....Man, you want to talk about a whipping exercise ....she execute it....however, he still had the goods and she still had to pay....

I think you got 'em all PP! Whoa! I just got a Time Tunnel rush seeing all those names again. Everyone I called was either JA or VI, but I remember all of 'em!

Sad side note on OK literacy: Back in the days before the internet & DVDs, when there were only 4 TV stations, including KETA, when you could only get KOCO if you lived within 3 miles of the station or had one hellacious roof antenna, my friends and I would amuse ourselves by looking up goofy names in the phone book. (DISCLAIMER! I am NOT making this next part up!) One day, in the "f"s in the white pages, we found "Fone Company". In the column where the address and number would normally be listed it read, "See 'Southwestern Bell Telephone Company'" We laughed for hours about that. If anyone has an OKC phone book from circa 1966-67, please corroborate this for me!

These "exchange" numbers are still used by the phone company. Had a problem with my phone and a SW Bell tech came out on a Saturday morning to fix it. I said something to the effect that it must suck to have to spend a Saturday working especially in this area because all the homes are so old. Told me she loved working the "melrose" exchange and went one to explain that the bldg. on South Shartel contained the exchange.

You mean the Poem High Filght, I remember them doing a reading
of this when one of the stations went off the air. Here is the Poem:

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Too funny! I had a neighbor in the late 70s-early 80s (The calendar, not the neighbor) who worked for SWBT as an information operator. She told me that at least once a week they would get a call asking for the number for 911.

Loading a roll of film into a camera.

And I don't mean dropping a 35mm cartridge into a point & shoot, or a 110 instamatic, or a disc. I have and use 4 cameras older than I am, and it's always like a birthday or Christmas to open one of these up, take the roll out and spool another one on. "Ooh! Did I use the right aperture and meter my exposures well on this roll?"

Instant gratification is overrated.

In addition to that, places that only take cash. I know many younger ones who are raised in the city are shocked that places exist that don't take debit/credit cards. We still find many of these places out on our motorcycle rides because we purposely go to those small mom-n-pop type places out in rural areas. I use the card more than I used to but still always try to have some cash, I know all to well having worked retail back in the days when electronic card transactions were just starting (over 20 years ago) and worked about 25% of the time...so i still don't trust them to be fail safe.

I was getting some dental work done when the dentist asked me about my wife (ex wife now) was doing. She had perfect teeth. Flossing fanatic. Told him she was in the lobby waiting for me when he told his assistant to bring her back to where we were. He gave her $5.00 and told her to go to the 7/11, get a giant cup of ice and a couple of bags of corn nuts.
