When you growup eating certain foods at different places that's how a food should taste.

For mexican it was El Charrito.

But Christmas, Good Friday and Easter are not JUST catholic holidays.

1) The whole point in making the observation that I did was the fact Christmas and Easter have lost their religious/spiritual meanings.

2) That too many kids do not appreciate presents of any kind because the mentality has become one where they feel these are things they are entitled too. Things they should get, not earn or miss out on. And this is every day things not just holidays or birthdays.......

I guess I should have worded the original posting differently to have avoided the religious implications. The "Good Friday" story was to show how far things have slipped. Not that it was "Good Friday!!" It's probably true about the July 4Th holiday..
Memorial Day!!! It's just a three-day weekend for most. And another sale item (wreathes) for corporate America. How many remember it as Decoration Day and was to honor the war dead.

Forget the religion............

These are things that are passing us by now and soon will have no significance......

I'm sorry!! I forget how many of you are grant-grads and need things spelled out and a picture drawn...

Agree, most kids have no idea what the 4th of July , Memorial Day, Columbus day,l Veterans Day are really all about, much less Christmas and Thanksgiving. Some stores are even open on Christmas Day. It was a long time ago , but I do remember learning about something of these days in public school........

Yup. El Charrito. Hmm.

Oh yeah, El Charrito (not El Chico, thank you very much). Over time I was privileged to get to know some of the people from El Charrito. Phil Renteria grew up working there and became a leader in the local graphic arts business. Great guy, he passed away in the '90's way too young. Lupe, one of the waitresses there, I last saw waiting tables at Nino's on NW Expy a few years ago. She was an awesome waitress and approached her job with good humor and seemed to really enjoy it.

Funny story, I went with a business associate, let's call him "Hoss", to Nino's a few years ago. He is a big blowhard of a guy who tries to impress people with his sense of humor. He made a fool of himself using bad Spanish, telling Lupe that if she didn't give us excellent service he would see that she was sent back where she came from. She said "Detroit?" She had a strong Mexican accent but was actually born in Detroit to a Mexican family. One of the best laughs I ever had.

We ought to vote on that one. That's something I never did, probably
because there weren't any melon patches where we lived.

My kids or grandkids will never know about having to (or being able) picking up Pop bottles and selling them because you wanted to to earn some money. Not picking up cans because you needed to. The days of worry a free childhood are gone. There have always been
kooks who were deranged enough to harm kids on Trick or Treat. Now
they've multiplied exponentially.

Shooting off fireworks on the driveway or in the street was a way of life for
2 weeks. Getting burned was one of those rites of passage.

I sold cinnamon toothpicks at school! I'd get a vial of the extract from the

Since we were young and brave (translation;should have known better) we would lick or tip the bottle. It is easy to tell from the school photos who was messing with the oil. Ooooooooooooooooo that's a good one! Prunette and I almost always tip BUT
if the service is exceptional they get a better tip.

The thing I absolutely abhor is when the waitress or waiter keeps the change
because they assume we don't want it, or worse, that they think they
deserve it. It doesn't matter if it's 3 cents, bring ALL of the change back. The
manager will get an earful every time it happens. It's bad business.
