View Full Version : TIESTO coming to OKC

The out of town promoters who brought PVD thru were so impressed that they are interested in round two... Dj Tiesto!
John Bourke, shiny toy guns and myself have put our heads together, but cannot think of anyplace that would hold the size crowd he would bring...
Coca cola is too big and bar set up sucks, a parking lot in bricktown has to stop at 10, citywalk is too small and bobby wouldn't give the dj's a bartab...
Any suggestions?

Maybe Cox center? I know people there. He usually brings out a huge crowd, but not sure he'd fill the Cox in OK...

There is the crown jewel of all concert venues................The Diamond

Wonder what percentage of the bands that pull up there for the first time say this out loud:

"You booked me for this piece of sh**"

I'd put it at about 90

i was thinking the diamond too. just saw a concert there the other day, and although i agree that its not the premier venue it seems theyve taken some steps and cleaned it up a bit.
easy, you are probably right that the bands think that, but they arent the big bands. big bands, nicer venues. oh well, every city has one.

That's great. I saw him a few years ago in Dallas... hope he comes to OKC and I hope this is just the beginning of a long list of great DJs to hit our city.

What capacity range are you looking at? Some of the exhibit halls at the Cox Center have horrible acoustics, I worked car auctions there and it didn't matter much but one concert in them was just excruciating. If you could get one of the refurbished rooms or do something with the acoustics in the larger ones (maybe drapes in front of the block walls) then the larger of those might be a good option.

I am so stoked Tiesto is coming here. That's like U2 coming here, but most won't realize it unfortunately! Please don't have it at the Diamond Ballroom, that place is a joke and an insult to big names. Any chance you can work with Banta and see if you can rent out the Tower Theatre on 23rd for one night? What about on OCU campus? ehhh Maybe not since they are a private Methodist university. Outdoors at TAFT stadium would be cool. Please not at Diamond or Coca-Cola though. Civic Center would have some awesome acoustics, but I doubt they'd trust a bunch of ravers to come in and treat the place with respect. I do agree with CCOKC that it should be an all ages show, unfortunately not enough Oklahomans are into the electronic scene. Promote this well and hopefully we'll get people driving from KC, Dallas, Tulsa, Little Rock, Fayetteville, etc.

Can someone explain to me what the draw of a dj is? Isn't it just a guy playing cds and records? I mean, its not like they are musicians or anything, right? Correct me if I am wrong, I just don't get it.

I was a club DJ in a previous life and it's really tough. Mixing songs together at the right tempo takes a lot of practice and skill. Guys like Tiesto do this but with their own music and effects. It's def not for everyone - but being an old DJ I can appreciate it.

I was thinking the arena. Probably too big unless we promoted the crap out of it...

Just saw Sasha & John Digweed at Red Rocks Ampitheatre this past Saturday and it was unbelievable. That venue is simply amazing. I'll definately try to go see Tiesto.

Does Will Rogers host concerts anymore? I kind of liked that place. That might be a good spot to consider.

Definitely awesome to hear this! I have "In Search of Sunrise" volumes 4-7 & "Elements of Life". The first song of his that ever hooked me was "Carpe Noctum".

I don't see how the Coca Cola Events Center can be too big. I think that's perfect for a DJ that is this caliber of talent. You'd be surprised of the size of crowd this guy will bring in. His work is amazing.

OKC, we're not "surprised" the size of crowd he'd bring in, he'd bring in tens of thousands elsewhere.

Oh dear god that's funny...and sadly true. We so badly need a better venue for the indie bands to play. I guess the b-town events center is too pricey?

Lol...I know you're not "surprised" as you are "stoked" because you know what kind of artist he is. But other people on here who don't know his work or who he is are basically clueless.

I just saw on his Myspace page that it is planned for Monday, October 26th, as of now at City Walk. I do hope that changes! You can buy tickets through his Myspace page as of now. Of course, the link is to a website called inthebooth.com and you have to join to obtain the presale tickets. So if you don't want to spend $50 or $80 depending on the package you choose plus the price of tickets, then I'd just wait...which is what I'm going to do!

This is AWESOME, AWESOME news.... I would definitely like to see a bigger venue...

Just off the top of my head I would look at the Rose State venue.... I know Bryan Adams just played there.... and also what about the Fair Grounds Arena? Or even the Zoo.... Outdoors in late October for Tiesto would be awesome.

I think the Zoo would be a good locale, even moderately attended shows look good and there is room to spread out and enjoy the show and you can still get a large crowd in there like when I saw Huey Lewis & The News on the Sports tour (1984) that had almost 14,000 at the show...they also had an opening act by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble but he just starting to hit it big at that time. Plus that time of year it is starting to get dark earlier and the weather is usually nice.

I do know of one DJ, he is the nephew of a friend of mine here, he won the 2007 DMC World DJ Championship (http://www.dmcdjchamps.com/worldchamps.asp).

That's why I'm saying it needs to be in a different venue. They just want to have it there because that's where PVD performed. IF it has to be there then I WILL go there. I mean, when's the next opportunity that he'll be coming back? Probably Dallas. I just hope we make such an impression on him that he'll include us in future tours!

It wasn't bad when PVD performed there. They shut the whole place down and the only people allowed in were folks who had tickets and were there to see van Dyk.

Yeah, but it's 7 clubs in one. What did they do? Raise the walls so everybody could see him? There's not room enough in CityWalk to support the fans that will want to see Tiesto. Still need a bigger venue. If I were promoting him I'd find a larger place.

Why not rent an empty warehouse or building for a day to host this. Kind of like the underground parties of the late 90's.

PVD is good...Tiesto is next to BT in claiming the title of GOD. There's no comparison...Tiesto will pull a much larger crowd.

Renting an old warehouse is a great idea and one that I'd wholeheartedly endorse if the promoters managed to find one that was already wired properly and up to fire code, those would be two very large hurdles.

You know the one really large club that typically plays top 40 and hip hop that has a second-level up above it where there are windows overlooking the lower dance floor? That whole area is where they had the PVD show. The other clubs were shut down and they had them sealed off. The number of people who were there and the size of that venue was just right.

I agree, I would much rather see him somewhere besides CityWalk or a Bricktown Club, that's not my thing. Not to mention he can fill a better place than any Bricktown Club.

I wouldn't call or treat him like God, but he is a HUGE name around the globe. I'd compare Tiesto to U2 for all those non electronic fans. A warehouse show with his full light show would be ridiculously awesome. I still think a warehouse or zoo amphiteatre at night would be the best! Here he is at the 02 in London last year.

I know we're not Glasgow (city pop ~581k; metro pop ~1.2mil) but...

again, not Copenhagen (city pop ~1.2 mil; metro pop 1.9 mil) but...

Some dj's do produce music and play live keyboards on top of the tracks they are playing, but the duty of a dj is to make people dance. A good dj is able to look at the crowd he is playing to and tap into what will appeal to the spectrum of people he is performing for and allow them to get the funk down. The artistry comes into play with his track selections and the ability to seamlessly weave songs together. And yes, it takes just as much skills as anyone playing the guitar or any other instrument.

And zoo amp is too large, I already suggested it.

kevinpate
07-26-2009, 04:42 AM
I don't get why zooamp would be too large. Seems like a simple roll or three of orange construction mesh could mark off an area and funnel folks to the lower bowl down by the stage. Based on the Y Tubes, attendees seem to prefer to be elbow to elbow anyway so herding them into a tighter area shouldn't be much of an issue, so long as no one shoots the cattle which escape.

My tastes don't generally lean to techno, but the sounds in those clips weren't displeasing.

Seems to me the biggest negative of zooamp would be their early shut it down time. I suspect most who would attend wouldn't care for the party to end well before 11 pm.

No offense was meant by my post. Tiesto coming to OKC is a big thing. He played at one of the Olympic ceremonies last time around and has headlined huge events on pretty much every continent. That speaks volumes. The ones you mentioned are almost casino showroom material now.

I'm new to this board, but some 6 or 7 years ago, when I was really into the whole "rave" thing, it seemed like there weren't many big names of that genre coming to OKC. I kept track of them via...okcraves.com. I was staying with family near Ardmore for a little mini vacation every 4-6 months. I wante dto get out of the house for a coupla hours, but OKC...I dunno. Perhaps being an hour from the State Palace in New Orleans spoiled me, but when a city that was actually bigger than NOLA population-wise had a near dead scene, it made no sense to me. I guess it is comparing apples to oranges, two totally different cities.

I'm surprised I'm the first to bring this back up from 6 feet down! Then again, in my deafened state, it wouldn't surprise me if the other 'ravers' last night were still crashed out!!

THIS SHOW WAS INTENSE!!!

He played a lot of new stuff from his new album and about half of it I didn't recognize because I'm all about his older stuff. It was a lot of dance vs. trance, which is more of what I like--of his discography.

The place was jumping all night and it really got to going when he played 'Adagio For Strings'!

I hadn't been to City Walk in a long time and I like how they reconfigured that corner where I knew he'd be set up, but I still say if he comes back, they need to set that show up in a bigger venue.

Oh, and one of the guys working at City Walk told me in response to me asking how ticket sales were for this show, "we presold more for this than we sold outright for the PVD show". Believe that!!

Yeah, the show was ridiculous… I went to PVD, ATB, and this Tiesto show.

As for pure excitement I was looking forward to Tiesto the most. After it’s all said and done I think I liked the ATB show the most… It was the least busy and so that was probably why. I guess I’m getting old. :-(

The Tiesto show last night was WAY TOO FULL. They desperately need to have any more shows of this magnitude at a larger venue. You couldn’t even dance it was so packed. And there were even a couple of fights starting up, which frankly, is very rare for this type of show. I am the biggest Tiesto fan out there and I even escaped down to the lower bar. I did make one trip to the front of the inner pit for some pics and the experience, and it was absolutely insane… I barely got out without at least my sensibilities bruised. lol

As for the show, both ATB and Tiesto are master entertainers. They absolutely love what they are doing, whether it’s in front of 20,000 in Copenhagen or 500 in a club in OKC. They totally played to the crowd and hammed it up. ATB even had technical issues all night with the left monitor going out repeatedly AND a complete sound failure, which he absolutely played off and somehow used to get the crowd even more into it… he is good at what he does!

PVD was awesome too, but he is a bit more of a “technician.” Not real animated and a little bit in his own world in the booth, but his sounds were flawless and he is, like the other two, a consummate professional.

All in all, I absolutely loved seeing all of these guys and can’t express how awesome it was to get to do it right here in OKC… Hopefully we can keep getting these guys through here… gotta get a better venue though if we want to keep getting the best through here…. My opinion….
