View Full Version : Dairy Queen ever coming back to OKC?
SoonerDave 06-18-2009, 09:42 PM When I was growing up, there used to be a slew of Dunn's Brazier Dairy Queen stands around Oklahoma City, and over time they deteriorated and went out of business.
When they closed, I lost my Oreo Blizzards, and on that day, I mourned. There's simply nothing as good as an Oreo Blizzard nowhere, no how, no time.
I kinda thought the DQ chain had dried up until I went on a vacation trip a few years back and discovered the chain is alive and well in other states, including Texas, Florda, and a chunk of the southeast.
Given that I've seen DQ start up what appears to be national advertising in the last year or so, I was wondering if anyone might know if the chain might start up again here in OKC.

the brand is alive and well, its just a matter of who wants to invest in the franchise to bring it wherever they want it to exist.
youd think dairy queen would still somewhat exist in metro okc, i was shocked when the one in mwc closed. guess more okies prefer braums over dairy queen.
by the way, is there still any baskin robbins left in the metro area? i recall one being off of nw expresswy and rockwell for a while. did it go dry too?
SoonerDave 06-18-2009, 10:33 PM The last DQ I knew of was on Main street in Norman, and it closed and was torn down about a year ago, maybe a little longer.
I believe I saw a new Baskin Robbins somewhere in town just recently, but darned if I can remember where :(
The thing I liked about DQ was their soft-serve ice cream was a nice alternative to conventional ice cream. Not as rich as "gelato," but not as frothy or "melty" as the stuff they pump out at McDonald's. And that's what made the Blizzards so DARNED good.
I wonder if I whine long enough someone will open a DQ for me....I had an Oreo Blizzard at a DQ just south of Atlanta about eight years ago, and it was SWEEEEEET
onthestrip 06-18-2009, 10:57 PM Yea, its too bad that the DQs dont have much presence in our state anymore. If you have driven to dallas in the last decade youll find that DQ hasnt gone away.
About Baskin Robbins. I know there is one on N. May and one in Edmond at Spring Creek Plaza. I would think there are a couple more in the metro area.
kmf563 06-19-2009, 08:22 AM I too miss the DQ. I treat myself to a drive to Chickasha occasionally just for a cone and a blizzard. Yes I have both, it's a long drive! haha.
Every time we go to Kansas or Texas we stop and have DQ at the first one we see. They are alive and well everywhere but here. Braum's drove them out. I think Braum's is gross.
SoonerDave 06-19-2009, 08:41 AM Although I like Braum's, I must admit they don't extend the quality control they exercise over their Tuttle plant to their stores. And their stores are very inconsistently managed.
As an example, the Braum's on SW 89th just east of Penn is so poorly kept that I simply refuse to go there anymore. It just looks perpetually dirty. On the other hand, the Braum's just north of SW 119th on Western is comparatively pretty nice - not spotless, but much better than the other. And I've heard other people express similar sentiments.
But Braum's isn't DQ. No one has DQ's ice cream...and I may just have to treat myself to a trip to Chickasha.... :D
kevinpate 06-19-2009, 08:54 AM > I may just have to treat myself to a trip to Chickasha...
Make an old style night of it,. some Jake's Ribs, hit the DQ, enjoy their drive-in
amylynn5656 06-19-2009, 09:16 AM I lived in Boulder, CO recently and DQ is alive and well in Colorado - I miss it!
metro 06-19-2009, 09:35 AM DQ is and has been a Texas staple for decades. They have always done regional or national advertising for many years. Part of that is probably their ad stategy and also Chickasha and other towns with DQ's are still within our TV MARKET.
As far as Baskin Robbins, they've definitely closed many stores in the last 2 years, but I've seen a few new stores open up as well. Here are 2 metro locations:
Baskin-Robbins Store Finder (http://www.baskinrobbins.com/StoreLocator/PrxResults.aspx?hdnLatitude=35.4894&hdnLongitude=-97.519&hdnType=ByLocation&rdoUnit=Mi&txtPostalCode=73103&txtAddress=&txtCity=&selStateProvince=&txtDistance=15&txtMatchesperPage=5)
kmf563 06-19-2009, 11:03 AM People always say it's a Texas staple...I don't know why they think that. DQ began in Illinois and their headquarters for the US is in Minnesota. They have over 5900 US locations and are in 20 foreign countries. Why China gets one on every corner and we get one in Chickasha Oklahoma just doesn't make sense. Maybe with Oklahoma getting all this new attention as being a great place during these economic times they will reconsider and open one back up.
Karried 06-19-2009, 11:24 AM What's coming in on Penn between Memorial and 122nd? Across the street from Taco Bell.. North of KFC ? Looks like an ice cream shop for sure.. has two giant cones on the exterior. Anyone know?

Freddy's Frozen Custard.

Despite it's HQ, it's still a Texas' staple, just like Whataburger (which is a Texas' company).

Why? It doesn't have anything to do with Texas. Just because they have stores there? I seriously want to understand, not trying to be ugly about it.
mireaux 06-19-2009, 02:06 PM And that's what made the Blizzards so DARNED good.

Yeah, the "Mix" at Braums just doesnt stack up to a Blizzard. When you put candy into ice cream..it should blend well with it..like the perfection that a Blizzard is.
...not these huge ginormous chunks of candy stacked high on top like how Braums does with their Mix.

Its not a Texas staple at all, but its largely believed that a single franchisee owns many, if not all of the ones in Texas.
the stupid advertising motto of a DQ sign being a "Texas stop sign" is probably what burned that false imagery into the minds of those who think its a "Texas thing".
metro 06-19-2009, 02:47 PM Nope. From everyone I know in Texas it's always just been a "right of passage" type thing, despite it being based out of MN. Never have I heard anyone in Texas refer to the "Texas stop sign." Same goes with Whataburger. Just a Texas staple. No different than eating a "chicken fried steak" in Oklahoma, heck those might not have been invented in Oklahoma, but it's still like a right of passage to most.

This is very hypocritical because the chickashaDQ is the dirtiest nastiest fast food resturaunt in oklahoma

The 89th Street Store is under renovation. So the unclean should be going away in the coming week(s).

Ohhhh...that makes total sense. Texans started it!! haha. Boomer. :ou2
metro 06-19-2009, 04:47 PM Maybe it's also because DQ and Whataburger also tended to be the first and often ONLY chains in rural Texas towns?
SoonerDave 06-19-2009, 05:21 PM This is very hypocritical because the chickashaDQ is the dirtiest nastiest fast food resturaunt in oklahoma
Hypocritical? How?
I've never BEEN to the Chickasha DQ.
Try again.
knightunder 06-19-2009, 06:43 PM braums in my opinion will win the award for the most inconsistent run down stores ever, what happen to braums? where are coorporate managers, the need to go check their stores. one word ...........FILTHY
bluedogok 06-19-2009, 07:18 PM The Texas DQ's do have their own marketing group and a slightly different menu but they are still franchises of corporate based in Minneapolis. They were the first chain in many smaller Texas towns and in many of them hold a special place for the locals. Sonic has moved into many of the small towns as well and some of the DQ's have closed.
Now Whataburger is a Texas institution, started in Corpus Christi and was still based there until last year when the corporate HQ was moved to San Antonio.
SoonerDave 06-19-2009, 10:17 PM One thing I've noticed, which I'm sure is a consequence of the variability of franchisee implementations, is that a DQ store in one county may be a borderline dive, but one down the street may be really, really nice. I recall one store I visited in a suburb of Atlanta, and it was spit-and-polish clean and sharp looking, while one I has gone into in Gainesville, Florida was a pit.
I know folks have varied opinions of McDonald's, but one thing I remember from a relative that used to work in one was that one thing that "corporate" McDonald's wouldn't tolerate from a franchisee were reports of dirty stores. They sent out "undercover" corporate monitors to franchisee stores periodically to assess their compliance with corporate rules, including cleanliness right down to the bathroom toilets. Now I'm not saying there aren't dirty McDonalds stores, but there is at least an intent to keep the places clean with an awareness of corporate consequence....don't think Braum's does anything like that.
OKCDrummer77 06-19-2009, 10:32 PM Never have I heard anyone in Texas refer to the "Texas stop sign."
I've seen that phrase on billboards in Texas.
easternobserver 06-19-2009, 11:47 PM There are very good Dairy Queen stores in Anadarko, Clinton and Okmulgee, as well as in Chickasha. Also a good one in Blackwell and one just off I-35 around Tonkawa.

Since when was there one that opened in Okmulgee?
Doug Loudenback 06-20-2009, 02:48 AM > I may just have to treat myself to a trip to Chickasha...

About the Chickasha trip, I'd also be compelled to have me a smashed onion burger at JW (or J&W) Grill nearby. Best ever.

actually no...try going to the mcdonalds off of I-35 and 10th street.

DQ corporate has pushed through a renovation package which has upset some of the old line DQ franchisees. Most of the stores around here have been redone but I know many of the small town ones have lagged behind. McDonald's has been going through the same thing with the McCafe concept.
I know folks have varied opinions of McDonald's, but one thing I remember from a relative that used to work in one was that one thing that "corporate" McDonald's wouldn't tolerate from a franchisee were reports of dirty stores. Now I'm not saying there aren't dirty McDonalds stores, but there is at least an intent to keep the places clean with an awareness of corporate consequence....don't think Braum's does anything like that.A McDonald's franchise is much more expensive than a DQ franchise and their franchise agreements are much stronger and the requirements to obtain a franchise are much higher.
Braum's are all corporate owned, and yes, they need to have a better plan in place to deal with both the service and cleanliness of their stores. That has always been a disappointment in what is otherwise a quality place.
Peanut Buster Parfait > Blizzard
I like both, although I usually get the PBP 2to1 against the Strawberry Cheesecake Blizzard. We alternate going between DQ, Amy's Ice Cream or Culver's or Freddy's if we are up in North Austin. We have been finishing up some that I brought back from Braum's in my trip to Altus.
easternobserver 06-20-2009, 02:46 PM It appears to have been there for 30 years or more.

from what ive heard, working at braums compared to other fast food chains in quite rigorous. next time you go to braums, feel free to ask them how hard their job is.
Thunder 06-20-2009, 03:15 PM I've lived in Okmulgee for nearly 2 years and had taken trips thru it since then. I don't remember one being there and definately have not been inside the resturant. The next time I drive thru, I will try to remember and find this place.

jsibelius 06-20-2009, 10:55 PM DQ is a Texas staple, or has been in the past, because it has long been the only fast food chain the small towns. (Whataburger? Ha! Maybe in the small towns down near the coast, but nowhere I've ever been. In Corpus Christi, they're on every corner, though. No mistaking where headquarters is for that company.) What makes it a "staple" is that it's something that's always there, like milk in your fridge, not that its headquarters is there.
And the "Texas stop sign" thing definitely was an advertising campaign on the part of DQ. It was on TV commercials and on roadside billboards.
I certainly wouldn't argue with bringing the Blizzard back to town. I don't buy lookalikes at other chains. I just wait until I go somewhere and buy the real thing.
kevinpate 06-21-2009, 06:17 AM When I was little, a local family ran a DQ up the street from the house, right next to a fam style diner they owned. Later in my youth it became a Daisy Queen. What caused the split, I dunno. To even ask was way beyond my interest level at that age. Everything still tasted delicious so daisy v dairy meant nada to a kid.
But fab ice cream, a cinder block wall to sit and eat it on, then back on the bike again. I do miss those simple days.
mireaux 06-21-2009, 06:27 AM Burger King married Dairy Queen and they lived together at the White Castle where they raised a son who grew up and left: a Jack, who lived in a box.
kevinpate 06-21-2009, 08:11 AM They sometimes hopped on a Subway to go visit uncle Peppe Roni of the Pizza clan. A little Quizno for you. Did Peppe live in a hut, a shack, or an Inn?
Answer - all three, peppi, he really got around
SoonerDave 06-23-2009, 12:29 PM from what ive heard, working at braums compared to other fast food chains in quite rigorous. next time you go to braums, feel free to ask them how hard their job is.
I have no doubt their jobs are hard.
They still need to extend their QC efforts to their stores, because I believe there are more than a handful of people who would echo the sentiments about the inconsistent cleanliness of their stores. To me, its counterintutive that exclusively corporated-owned stores would exhibit such inconsistency.
icecold 06-24-2009, 11:01 AM I know the DQ in grove has been going strong for at least 20 years. Its ran really well. I remember the times when I was "good" during the grocery shopping at IGA my mom would stop thru DQ on the way home and I would get a sundae in a mini MLB batting helmet. Also my mom wasnt a very good cook so I always asked for an ice cream cake for my bday. Good memories. Plus its just tough to beat that steak finger basket.
This is very hypocritical because the chickashaDQ is the dirtiest nastiest fast food resturaunt in oklahoma
Yeah, but only because the Country Cottage in Locust Grove is closed.
For the time being.
Someday it'll reopen and regain it's rightful title. I miss that place. They had the best e-coli burgers I've ever tasted.
aintaokie 06-24-2009, 01:33 PM FYI...if you're heading down to Dallas on I-35 and you want to do the DQ thang...there's one in Valley View 13 miles south Gainesville @ Exit 455 and one in Denton @ the hwy 380 exit. Both are right off of I-35. Gainesville had 4 DQ's in the 70's but now they're all gone.
Heyuri 06-24-2009, 02:59 PM I remember while growing up, there was a DQ within walking distance of my house. That was a treat in the summer. Eventually the land lord decided he wanted to open up an ice cream shop so he booted them out... Of course, this wasn't in Oklahoma, so it doesn't have much to do with the conversation apart from it being a DQ.
My local favorite right now is Rusty's.

theres also a DQ going northbound towards wichita on I-35..i think its in a town called Billings..in Kay County, inside of a gas station..its was three years ago at least when i was there last in summer 06.

That was there the last time I went that way, about a year ago. It's the Billings/Marland exit. I think the exit number is 203.
RealJimbo 07-14-2009, 04:20 PM My mother worked at a DQ near N. May and Britton Rd. in the '60's. It was a fantastically managed store, very clean and all the food was awesome. They cleaned the store from top to bottom every day and most of the surfaces in the kitchen were stainless steel. It was one of Mr. Dunn's DQs and he was a real taskmaster. To this day, there is just nothing I enjoy better than a Peanut Buster Parfait. I guess it's the combination of salted redskin peanuts, fudge and ice cream. Nothing else like it!
Thunder 07-14-2009, 04:43 PM RealJimbo, that is an awful avatar!!! You need to crop out that pix to remove all that white blank space.

Just because a business isn't doing business in Oklahoma doesn't mean its out of business. Keep in mind Chipotle didn't come to Oklahoma until last year and it has been around since the late 90's. And there are still many chains yet to wander in to this strange time warp of a dirty state.
I am a transplanted Minnesotan on a temporary basis and DQ is one of the things I have to forgo until I am done with school.
Even better then DQ is Culvers....Try it if you can!
COLEKTR 08-25-2009, 12:08 AM AHHHHHHHHH DQ !!! how can you beat 2 feet walking exra"o" big tots & a big choke(cherry coke) ???? for a 4dollar bill.
decepticobra 08-25-2009, 07:08 AM the real question is: whatever happened with the timeless association of DQ and Charles Schulz' Peanuts?
