At the last Coit's meeting a question was brought up about the radio station broadcasting from Capitol Hill. My sources (Mom & Dad) tell me it was KLPR but are unsure the exact location. They seem to think it was 134 Commerce or 2600 S. Robinson. Mom said they would allow people in to listen to live guests: Wanda Jackson, Jude & Jody and so on.

Anybody know the true location?

It's still there. It is being updated and repaired to be used/leased for office's. I think Doug has a few photos.

Hey Doug:...I remember as a very small boy having my tonsils removed in that hospital and my two younger sisters were born there....the Mrs. was also born in that Hospital....A small twist of fate in that the day my wife was born in Capitol Hill Hospital there was another baby born ( a boy) thirty some years later my wife's sister and the boy baby were married.....Strange huh....The marriage didn't take though...Oh well, I'm working on forty-four years with the same old gal.....

My brother and I had our tonsils removed there at the same time as well.

My first wife was born there..........

Think that's why they closed it.......

one of her is enough......

You're a very bad boy, John. Very very bad. :LolLolLol

There are some interior shots of the hospital in OHS's Star Archives. If anyone wants them, I'll be glad to retrieve and post. One may have been of John's 1st wife being born, who knows?

ON EDIT: I went to the Star Archives real quick and did find 2 pics of nurses aides ... same lady ... and in fact I was amazed to read that the OHS caption said that the lady was attending to "The First Wife of papaOU." How could they have known to write such a caption, way back when? God only knows. It's a mystery.Twilight zone. Something like that.

By the way, that patch on the nurses aide's sleeve looks rather like a Civil Defense Bomb Shelter design, doesn't it. What's up about that? :dizzy:

went by TG&Y on Capitol Hill. The area where the original sign would be is painted over very heavily. Probably will never be seen again.

The "original" Capitol Hill Baptist Church which has had a flourishing Hispanic attendance, is now for sale.

I found out from Southside Girl, whose Mother has been a Christmas Connection volunteer that Christmas Connections is moving to a new location. They have been in the former Katz building for years. I'm not sure if they used the Langston's side as well since I have never been there. Southside Girl says they are moving because the roof is caving-in and they have had no heat for years. Seems the current owners would never make any form of repairs. OCCC is going to make it a satellite location there. At least the buildings from Walker to near Harvey have tenants. Hopefully this can continue to Robinson and beyond.
For several years the display windows of the J.C. Penny's building had window size pictures of a CHHS homecoming parade.

Doug,

This might be the answer to the building boom of Capitol Hill in 1928.

Yeah. It's one of the articles in my Capitol Hill photobucket album:

Hey Gen/64 - Myself, my brother and my sister were all 3 born at Capitol Hill General!! My dad's best friend was Dr. Alvin R. Jackson who owned the hospital! I remember taking (now deceased) Mike Schroeder over there in about 64 or 65 to get his head sewn up from a small dispute he had. In 1971 being in the type of business we were Dr. Jackson gave my Dad everything in hospital. He was opening a small business and needed typewriters, desks etc. etc. I remember getting some of those steel mesh mask that they put over your face to gas you with. I used them as strainers in the sand filled cannister type ash trays to clean the cigarette butts out!! LOL The surgery room a few stories up had a closet full of nothing but men's bloody shoes. No big deal, just a memory!

Doug, it took a few times to see it all, but the information about Historic Capitol Hill was very interesting. When I was growing up, Capitol Hill was the place to shop, even after I had my own kids. I miss it. Seems like Malls replaced shopping at Capitol Hill. One of my first jobs was at JCPenneys at Shepherd Mall, I helped stock shelves before the grand opening I guess it was in 1965.

I find it funny that indoor malls caused the closing of strip malls and now indoor malls are losing businesses and customers to new strip malls
