bowtieguy 04-20-2009, 10:30 PM Hey, ya'll forgot about Alvin Crow's stint with the Sir Douglas Quintet. He and Doug Sahm were great friends. He has also performed with some of the greatest fiddle players in the country.
SoonerGirl26 04-21-2009, 11:40 AM OMGOSH have we forgotten Jude and Jody?
I see Jude Northcutt on stage at the Rodeo Opry almost every month! He is the sponsor of the Rodeo Opry band and performs the 'Momma Don't Allow No Guitar Pickin' Here" song on stage when he is there.
You all need to come to the Rodeo Opry in the Stockyards....what a pleasant surprise for an evening of entertainment for only $10. My friend Darlin' Darla MC's and hosts the show once a month....her shows are always sell-outs!

Prunepicker 05-06-2009, 10:25 PM I'm thinking of other musicians I would have loved to have seen.
Arturo Toscanini
Leopold Stokowski (those were 2 of the greatest conductors)
Gregor Piatigorsky (cellist)
Jascha Heifetz (the greatest violinist ever)
Serge Koussevitsky(great bassist and conductor of the Boston Symphony)
Bo Diddly
Chuck Berry
Little Richard (three great classical musicians)

Would you consider Zappa a classical musician and conductor. Since you did see some of his concerts you know the other musicians watched him constantly. Dweezil does the same touring now with a concert "Zappa plays Zappa" I have seen the video performance on PBS!
Many of Frank's band members at one time or another were trained in the classics. I heard once that Zappa himself was a percussionist of classical training.
Ruth Underwood as well

Talk about those you wish you had seen in live performances...How about these?:
WOODY GUTHRIE: Most of his original music was played on the roadside until the depression began to ease up
JIMMIE RODGERS:....the original Freight Train performer....People like Merle Haggard copied his way of vocalism.
JANIS JOPLIN:...Oh My gosh...The Queen of today's Rock 'n Roll.
BUDDY HOLLY:....I'm sure someone out there saw one of his concerts. Such a waste to go down in an airplane.....the Beatles tried to mimmick him in performances...they even admitted it to Ed Sullivan on T.V.
Jimmi Hendrix:....Such a stupid Waste of Talent...No one can play the guitar like he did.....Not even Jim Morrision.....Oh well I'll quit dreaming and turn Glen Miller back on...I feel like I'm "In the Mood" to try and find the "Little Brown Jug...."Before answering Pennsylvania 6-5000..

You mean Lord Buckley wasn't "the" frieght train performer?
Prunepicker 05-08-2009, 06:13 PM Prune, I don't remember any of those guys. Were they northsiders or
what?
Yes, they were. A little north and east.
Prunepicker 05-08-2009, 09:33 PM I was looking through some 45's in my music closet. I haven't gone through
all of them, but I just noticed 'This is Dedicated to the One I Love' by the
Mama's and the Papa's. There was another called '24 hours'. My favorite
uncle was a DJ in OKC (KOCY) Tulsa, Witchita, and Akron. He used to grab a
handful of 45's and hand them to us. They'd already been played a million
times. Somewhere there's an autographed copy of the Buckingham's. I
couldn't stand them so it's probably in mint condition.
My brain hurts.
Later I'm going through my baseball cards. Don't even ask...

Going back and seeing some of these old threads reminds me of many things we have all discussed. Yes, Jimmie Rodgers went by the "singing Brakeman" and then there Came "Boxcar Willie"....Oklahoma Music is really phenomonal.
poisonokie 10-20-2009, 10:41 AM One of my favorite "Okie" songs is "the Okie Boogie" Sometimes (mis)spelled Oakie Boogie, I've heard several version but what I believe to be the original recording and version is by Jack Guthrie, Woody's cousin
poisonokie 10-20-2009, 10:46 AM Tulsa Turnaround by Three Dog Night,
Livin' On Tulsa Time, Don Williams/Eric Clapton
Bigrayok 10-23-2009, 02:31 PM One of the best songs about Oklahoma in my opinion is called Oklahoma by Van Zant. A lot of Oklahomans have never heard the song by brothers Johnny (Lynyrd Skynrd) and Donnie (.38 Special) Van Zant. It is a tribute to the people and state of Oklahoma written after some of the tornadoes we experienced in the late 90's and early 00's and the Murrah Building bombing. Not bad for a couple of guys from Jacksonville, Florida.

RealJimbo 10-23-2009, 03:41 PM Back to Oklahoma Music. This Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm is a rare opportunity to hear a legendary Okie expat (US Grant, Class of '62) who performs under the name of Rev Otis Moon. He will play at the Chouse in Norman (717 W Boyd). An incredible talent, now living in Santa Fe. The admission is either a live chicken or 5 bucks. The event is kid friendly. Joining him will be Mary Reynolds, Louise Goldberg, Margie Shadid, Doug Matthews, Buffalo Ware, Greg Standridge, Dennis Angelo, Jim Hoke and Scott Ardis. It will be an incredible experience. For a taste go to THE REV. OTIS MOON on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads (http://www.myspace.com/revotismoon).
See All of you there on Sunday
Oh man, I just read this thread and realized that I missed seeing/hearing Jim Hoke again. He used to play the old Sword in the Stone back in the '60's and '70's. Real name Jim Hochanadel (spelling?). He was a music major at OCU back then and an awesome musician. He's a Nashville resident now and makes a good living as a session musician.

I first became aware of Hoke when he played with the Lienke Brothers Band in the late 70's and early 80's. We are still good friends and I got to see him a few months ago when he came to town to play a gig with my brother (stage name Rev Otis Moon.) His whole family is inCREDibly talented and they are all wonderful human beings. Glad you brought him up. Oh... and he makes a VERY good living as a studio musician. One of the worlds TOP sessions players in dozens of instuments. He legally changed his name when he moved there because, like you, no one could spell his name.

Twitty was NOT a "Drinker"....he did however (before going on stage) take a shot of Vodka to clear his throat.....He was a "Great" guy though. I met him through TG&Y and our friendship was still going strong until he passed away.
