tburn 04-01-2009, 12:15 PM The Wild's steakhouse north of Yukon
I hadn't heard that!
I went to a company party there years ago.
Johnnies Charcoal Broiler on Britton Road is still open and very busy at lunch.
I don't know of a Pancake place at May & Grand
I miss: HONG KONG STATION at May & Grand
very nice family and good, cheap, chinese food.
FFLady 04-01-2009, 12:39 PM How about Fire Mountain? I know the one at Penn & Memorial closed, I think there was another - anyone know if they are still around?
Prunepicker 04-01-2009, 02:23 PM I don't know of a Pancake place at May & Grand
It's been gone for quite a while.

The one just west of I-40 and MacArthur is still open.
Lin's, the Chinese Restaurant next door, is kicking Fire Mountain's %$&*@.
Fire Mountain had better step it up a couple of notches.
SoonerQueen 04-01-2009, 03:09 PM All the Village Inn's in the OKC area have closed, but the ones in Tulsa are still open. I also forgot to mention Shoney's. The ones in Oklahoma have closed, but they are open other places. I've lived in the area all my life and can't recall a breakfast place at Grand and N May Avenue.
bluedogok 04-01-2009, 07:29 PM I don't know of a Pancake place at May & Grand
The Girlie Pancake House
We're stacked better was their slogan.
I worked at the Sound Warehouse next door, it was across Country Club Drive where Starbucks is. It closed in the mid-to-late 80's and was several other restaurants over the years.
jbrown84 04-01-2009, 10:25 PM How about Fire Mountain? I know the one at Penn & Memorial closed,
Not surprising. I ate at the other one recently and it's nowhere near as good as Golden Corral or Hometown Buffet.
Boomerang
Boomerang is still open at SW 89th and Western and in Norman.
Prunepicker 04-01-2009, 10:42 PM I've lived in the area all my life and can't recall a breakfast place at Grand
and N May Avenue.
It was directly north of Sound Warehouse. There was a big clock on the
front of the restaurant.

Did Girlies have the putting green inside? I know one version of a restaurant at that building had a putting green right in the middle but not sure which. Anyone remember?
bluedogok 04-04-2009, 09:33 PM That was the one right after Girlie I believe, Wall Street.
Prunepicker 04-04-2009, 09:57 PM That was the one right after Girlie I believe, Wall Street.
I remember the Girlie Pancake House in Tulsa.

You are so right, I had forgotten about The Girlie Pancake House.A buffet place went in there later. I just live a few blocks south of the old Sound Warehouse. I used to go there when it was The Lakeside Theatre way back when. Dr Newcomb, a local dentist owned the theatre, and had his practice in the same building. Those were the days.
OKC4me 04-06-2009, 11:44 PM Boomerang on May closed??
Thunder 04-07-2009, 04:07 AM I'm sure all the Boomerang resturants closed.

boomerang on sw 89th & western is NOT closed. -M
rondvu 04-07-2009, 03:32 PM As a child we would often go to the Adairs cafeterias. Tropicana on NW 23rd it was lined with the aquariums. The Uptown in Midwest City had a round glass room, I thought that was so cool to eat in a glass room. I know there was one on N Lincoln and NE 23rd as well. I also enjoyed the salad lady at the Boulevard. "Would you like a salad today?" I hope she is doing well.
JamesAyers 04-07-2009, 09:53 PM Neptune Submarine Sandwich's had the best roast beef sub I've ever eaten. Crystal's Pizza was truly a one of a kind place. It was a great first job for me. I'll never forget the long lines of people waiting to get in and eat and the fun that people were having. But the one thing I'll always remember is a Sunday night in July when I told my parents that I was working, but instead, I was just hanging out at work. That was the night of the Sirloin Stockade murders. That's one night of my life that I will never forget.
metro 04-08-2009, 09:45 AM I thought Neptune's was still open......?

Norman is open too.
twinkles 04-11-2009, 12:21 AM The Neptune's on Classen is like the chain. Same bread, same sandwich names, same mayo and oil dressing on the sandwiches. Just ate there tonight, as a matter of fact.
Prunepicker 04-11-2009, 10:43 AM Monterey House was a favorite of mine. Does anyone remember it?
Charlie40 04-13-2009, 11:53 AM Monterey House was a favorite of mine. Does anyone remember it?
Yes the one on SW 59th between Walker and Western. Loved the little candy things they gave you instead of mints.
bluedogok 04-13-2009, 02:34 PM Praline candy
Monterey House was the first "real" Mexican food (other than tacos) that I tried, it was the one on May near Wilshire, I think where Sophabella's is. We ate at the 39th Street location quite a bit, along with the El Chico's at Shepherd Mall and North May where Zorba's is now.
tburn 04-13-2009, 03:59 PM Monterey Jacks?
I remember the location on N May where new Zorba's is now.
pretty straight forward Tex-Mex if I remember.
Reasonably priced and easy for quick lunch.
bluedogok 04-13-2009, 06:02 PM The old Zorba's location was originally an El Chico until the early to mid 80's. The owner or manager of the franchise then reopened as Cafe Ole. It closed in the early 90's and Monterey Jack's opened in its place. Zorba's opened after I moved to Austin in 2003, I used to go to the old location (not too far from my old residence in Mayfair) which was originally a Taco Tico.
I still miss the big burrito on the metal plates (like Sirloin Stockade used) that was like $5.00 with a drink at El Rancho Sanchez where the Oklahoma Baptist Convention building is by the Ford dealer at 39th & May.

Is that the location that's just north of Long John Silvers, formerly Quicks,
and on the east side of May? I believe at one time it was La Fiesta and
Jorge, the original Maitr'd at El Charritos on S. Robinson, worked there. I
always thought he looked like Danny Thomas.
La Fiesta was GREAT! It reminded me of El Charrito's.
Someone, on these threads, has called El Charrito a slop joint. I think that
person is insane.
bluedogok 04-13-2009, 10:37 PM Is that the location that's just north of Long John Silvers, formerly Quicks, and on the east side of May?
Yep
Prunepicker 04-13-2009, 11:27 PM Yep
I suppose the reasonable response is,
cool!
Back to biz... Jorge, aka George, is, or was, the most memorable maitre'd
I've ever known. That includes the 21 Club in NYC. He was at La Fiesta, aka
where we're talking about.
My dad had an optical shop on N. May and he'd drop in for adjustments.
bluedogok 04-14-2009, 08:29 PM I remember the name, I think he was the manager of that El Chico and subsequently opened up Cafe Ole to get out from under the El Chico franchise. It improved after that, it was the place that we went the most during that time period.
soonervegas 04-16-2009, 01:29 PM The Furr's in the Shields Mall is, I think, still a cafeteria style and is amazingly still open. They built one of their AYCE concepts in Moore, and I hate it.
Agree 100% with the Moore concept and Shields is now gone. No more Furrs for me....
Charlie40 04-16-2009, 02:40 PM Here is the reason Furr's closed on S Shields.
Thank you for your inquiry about our location on S. Shields. Our lease was up and the building was very old. At this time we don’t have plans to build on the South Side however, perhaps in a few years that might be the right thing to do. We do hope you will visit our Moore location and we appreciate your writing to us.

Mike Porter 03-25-2011, 04:53 PM Hey SoonerQueen, I haven't thought of Billie Lee Pies for a long time.
I think we have a pie pan from that place!
Was it on SW 29th and May, just east of May on the north side of the
street? Or was it on NW 23rd street just east of Western? I remember
Billie Lee's but I'm certain of the location.
HELP!
Did they have prune-cream pies?
It was located at N. W. 39th and Nicklas I used to work there
ctchandler 03-30-2011, 09:45 AM I'm pretty sure both Captain Ds and Monterey Jacks 23rd street locations are gone -- another mexican restaurant tried to make a go at 23rd/Ann Arbor and closed up fast. now yet another is remodeling and about to open.
I'm sad that Bahama Breeze at Lake Hefner is gone.
They had great Tostones (plantain nachos) and Tortilla soup and Key Lime Pie!
Papa's Little Italy on I-35. sigh...
I was a big fan of Papa's Little Italy and it was close to where I live. Are you aware that the lady that owned it is the daughter of the late Papa Dio (Bonadio I think is the correct last name)? If you go to Papa Dio's (now owned by the the original owner's son) on North May near Hefner you will find the menu is very similar and I think it is really good. My favorite at both places was the JRW special.

ctchandler 03-30-2011, 10:42 AM There was another pie shop location on NW 23 between Shartel and Western...
Yes, that's the one we went to. How about Fred Gang's. It was owned by the same company (franchisee) that owned Sizzlin Sirloin/Sirloin Stockade. And wasn't Billie Lee's owned by the same people?
Also, how about the Olive Tree on North May. I believe between 63rd and Grand Boulevard.
C. T.
Jim Kyle 03-30-2011, 11:56 AM I remember Fred Gang's -- it was the same building that housed the other Billie Lee's but I can't remember which was there first. I think the pie shop was first, then replaced by Fred Gang's -- which was the first one I encountered to have a fictional history behind it (but Vince Orza created a much better backstory for his Garfield's chain).
Don't remember the Olive Tree, but do recall a few others. Gator's, on Country Club Drive in the block just east of May and south of NW Grand Blvd, was a great little theme place in the 90s but didn't last very long... Their specialty was Cajun cuisine; I loved their Po' Boys...
ctchandler 03-30-2011, 12:37 PM A couple more that have mysteriously appeared in my brain. I don't remember seeing anyone mention Twitty Burger on the East side of South Western. I believe it was a little South of the Winchester drive-in. Also, The Fox and Horn just South of 59th and South Western. Another barbecue place comes to mind as well. It was Ray's on South Blackwelder, just a little ways North of Filmore elementary. I think that would be North of S. W. 51st. Somebody told me Ray's eventually moved to Moore and went by the name Ole Ray's.

I believe that was Billie Lee's. There was one at S.W. 29th and
S. May, too.
ctchandler 04-01-2011, 01:29 PM I just drove North on Classen and as I approached the old "Classen Circle" area, a barbecue place came to mind. But, I can't remember the name of it. Can anybody help? It was right where Jimmy's Egg is located now.
Thanks.
Moving to "Nostalgia & Memories". . .

Jim,
Thanks! I don't remember the "lunchtime special basket", what did it include besides the pie? I enjoyed a lot of lunches there and their ribs were pretty good to take home to the family.

Jim Kyle 04-01-2011, 05:20 PM It was their chopped beef sandwich on a bun, french fries, a drink, and the pie. Wish I could have one right now...

I'm drawing a blank unless you are talking about N. Western. Looking at a map, that's really close to Grand Blvd and N. W. Expressway. There was a Two Pesos that became Portabellos(sp) and is now Deep Fork Grill. My first thought was The Patio but they were on the South edge of N. W. Expressway. I have a feeling I'm wrong but I'm having a problem visualizing the location.
C. T.
Prunepicker 04-01-2011, 07:24 PM I'm drawing a blank unless you are talking about N. Western.
No. It was just west of Baptist Hospital on the north side of the street near I-240
which was Grand Blvd. Maybe it was just called BBQ.

Jim Kyle 04-01-2011, 08:24 PM Could have been, but the Crockett's that I remember was at May and Britton Road, behind the quick-lube place on the northeast corner. I do remember there were several others, but not where they were. Another place, not BBQ, near Baptist Hospital was Across The Street.

Jim,
I went to "Across The Street" too. But Crocketts was there. I ate there fairly often. I think it might have been the same building. There were better barbecue places but it was decent. You picked up a tray and slid it over the rails while telling the servers what you wanted. And since this is the "Restaurants that have closed" thread, one of the barbecue places I really enjoyed was Portland Barbecue at 23rd and North Portland. Their hot beans were really good and their chopped brisket was excellent. They also re-introduced pork to OKC.

No, this was a BBQ restaurant (I didn't care for Crockett's in OKC)
It was a house and there was a sign that said BBQ. It may have
started with an S.
Someone brought a reverse phone book to Coit's once and Soonergirl,
Frisky and I looked at it for 2 hours. I'll bet it's in that. Circa 1970.
Jim Kyle 04-01-2011, 10:18 PM Crockett's might have been the building where Schlottky's is now. Across the Street was next door to Highlander Bowl (now Conn's).

Sorry, a little to early for me. I'm old enough, but I was in the Navy till 1968 and didn't spend much time in that area until 1973 (even though my wife worked at Baptist Hospital).

I was really guessing, an educated guess because I ate at both places, but now that you mention it, they could have been where Schlotzky's is now.

USG'60 04-02-2011, 04:12 PM Wasn't it Earl's?
OSUMom 04-02-2011, 04:41 PM For some reason I was thinking Across The Street was on the corner of 39th and Ann Arbor. But I was young when we went there.

Re: "Across The Street"....As we said at Northwest Classen in the 70's: "Let's meet at the Street." Good days.
BlackmoreRulz 04-02-2011, 06:00 PM There was a pancake place on about 30th & N Lincoln back in the 60's, had silver dollar pancakes...anyone remember the name of it? Little Johns or something like that?
Also, Cattle Rustlers on I35 was pretty good when they first opened, loved their sourdough bread.

There was one at N.W. 39th and N. Ann Arbor and one on S.W. 59th
and S. Agnew. The one on N.W. Expressway was in a free standing
building where Panera is now.
