skyrick 04-23-2010, 11:43 PM There were two things that trumped everything when I was in school. The
World Series and launching Astronauts into space. Even work placed eased
back during those events.
I can remember as late as 10th grade, that would be '68, our history teacher at NEHS, Colonel Potter, (yes, really) rolling out the TV to watch the Tigers and ??? whoever the Tigers played in the Series that year.
I don't remember space launches in school after Mercury, but then again, during Gemini I was in Catholic school and the nuns wouldn't think of having TV in the room.

That would have been the 1968 World Series. Denny McLain had 31 wins!
Detroit won the series.

Who'd they play? We watched almost every game in history class, but for the life of me I can't remember the otther team. Interesting that it was mostly day games then too.

St. Louis Cardinals, if memory serves me right. Beat Bob Gibson in game 7.
Hammondjam 04-24-2010, 10:32 AM Jan and Jill? Maybe?
That sounds right. They were probably 6 or eight years older than me but I've always been a fan of the "more mature" ladies!

At St. James, we watched a lot of the NASA launches. I was sitting in class when they set foot on the Moon. I still remember that grainy 300 lb. television on the gun metal stand. You guys must have had Carmelite nuns. Hard core to the bone, they are! :^)

???? The first moon landing was in July at night time CDT. Unless you were in night summer school that must have been one of the five other visits to the moon.
Our penguins were Sisters of Mercy.
Hammondjam 04-24-2010, 12:41 PM Yep...my memory seems to as grainy as that old tv. Must have been a special "rerun". Our penguins were Sisters of (No) Mercy too.
A little off the subject, skyrick, but can you imagine one of your nun/teacher's reaction if a cell phone would have gone off during class? Or if someone would have actually answered theirs? I still have scars from just passing a note!

I miss day games. Regular season or post season. Would go into the Capitol Hill Sports Center and they had a portable t.v. on the counter showing a game. Of course those guys in there in the daytime were gamblers.

Just curious but did you live close to the Saint James Catholic School??? I did was why I was wondering... In fact I watched them build it from the time of ground breaking!!

Pay no attention to the man behind the mirror.
Pay no attention to the man........................
Okay, okay. Sorry for the diversion. I miss the day games too. I also clearly remember the TV's being rolled into the classroom to catch the daytime series games. I also remember watching LBJ give a talk to students about the importance of schooling, etc. His daughter, Lucie, was on with him and she talked too. It just doesn't seem like that long ago.

How about if someone would have smarted off to the teacher, like I've heard kids nowadays?
Father Micheliska would have his paddle on your ass in a heartbeat!

Hey, I've still got a messed up Knuckle from Sister Pendleton...Oh wait a minute...It was Mrs. Pendleton in Typing class and she slapped me across the Knuckles with a pointer...OKC Public Schools....11th grade....1962-1963. Learned how to type though......She wasn't the least bit worried either....If you guys will read the paper today you'll see where at Jefferson Middle School some mother made a citizens arrest on another child for cutting part of her SON'S pony tail ....Man, I can't begin to wonder what would of happened back in the 50's and 60's....
We put Rocks in Snowballs????Carltonskeeper's best friend jumped on my back and caught a real sharp pencil in a place he shouldn't have...Plus a fight incurred.....Man, when do you let your kids settle their disputes (w/o guns though) by themselves. I remember Coach Brown making you put on the gloves and "duke" it out until he decided you had had enough.....and then you got how many swats he wanted to give you....You'd go home (once) and tell your parents....He's apologize and then bust you again....Loved High School though...wouldn't mind doing it all over again (not as a teacher though).... Sorry I got off topic. Really sorry I missed the meeting today. Had a death in the family and there were too many folks from across the country here.....My brother-in-law:...CHHS Graduate (1960)....wasn't quite expecting this one ....Good guy married to a great woman...(my sister)....48 years sheesh....she was a tough old gal when we were growing up.....turn off the tears....Thanks guys and Gals....

off.
papaOU 04-24-2010, 11:36 PM When I was in 8th grade there was this Indian guy (Claude Tonahma) was growing his hair long. Not a good idea with the many greasers at CHJH in 1969. There were close to 10 guys after the one. He didn't run and fought the scissors, knifes, and a cigarette lighter off.
I had a few "arguments" with the greasers as well. You guys would have not thought I had long hair would you?

No, I lived down by 55th and Agnew.

Small world...grew up down the street from and went from kindergarten thru
12th grade with Claude. Claude wasn't a big fighter but wouldn't run from one.
CHJH had plenty of greasers to go around back then.

I was simply quoting you directly from your post. Yes I'm a cowboy grad and a CHHS grad a little older than yourself. I don't know if your having fun or serious but I'm not gonna trash talk your choice of school (OU). I have througly enjoyed reading the posts on this forum having spent most of my life in south OKC and teaching in one of the southside schools for 27 years. If
you want to start the crap that belongs on the sports blogs then I won't bite.

That's great to hear if that's the case. I no doubt know some of the people
posting and older/younger... brothers/sisters. I wouldn't trade growing up on the southside for anything. About the only thing I didn't enjoy was the Redskins football streak from 69-71 plus part of 72 I think. 0-40 something.

!!!! You're a LongWhore fan??!! I have some respect for you (less now, now that I know this) so I'll hold my tongue.
JMGrad68 04-26-2010, 04:07 PM They'd let us watch the World Series day games when I was in school. The best was in 1960, watching Mazeroski's home run beat the Yankees. I must have been in Mrs Rucker's 5th Grade at Nichols Hills. No, not rich, we had a house with one car garage, 1 phone, 1 TV, 1 bathroom, and I had a younger and older sister...we lived in OKC between Britton & Nichols Hills.
The hero of the '68 World Series (I'm a lifelong Cards fan) was Mickey Lolich, not Denny McLain.
Born in 1950, I don't remember radio shows, but I love old radios, have a couple I need fixed. Great memories of sitting next to my Grampa's big floor model twisting the dial slowly to hear distant places like New Orleans and Chicago and Denver. Would love a working old floor radio...but I'd love a working '67 GTO or even a '71 Fiat 850 Spider, my favorite fun car to drive.
Generals64 04-26-2010, 04:46 PM I am really a fan for whoever I'm rooting for at the time....Love to watch the game when Dallas Plays Eagles...but, about 12-13 years ago I was in the wholesale Grocery business and I guy from back east was doing everything in his power to buy from us. One day we were talking Little League Baseball and he asked if I had ever heard of (going to misspell it) Carl Yastremski?...Of course who hadn't....The Great Yaz was this guys Father-in-law....He had autograph baseballs sent to my son and his friends....who did Yaz-whatever play for anyway?????

You said you worked at TG&Y for sometime. I spent a couple of years at the
29th and May store. Don't remember the manager but I think the assisstant was a J. Knorr who moved to 74th store possibly in 72 maybe? I enjoyed working there, CHHS and Grant kids working side by side.

Used to watch Tom while at home from school for lunch. Three Stooges and Foreman Scotty were after school fare. Saw the show when Orville faahted, then watched Jack Ogle lose it and laugh himself silly when he signed off the late news with "and good night Orville, where ever you are"
RealJimbo 04-27-2010, 09:42 PM Oh, that reminds me of the newscast when Bob Barry Sr. misspoke and said "farting linebacker" and never missed a beat. But Linda Cavanaugh, who could always get his goat, said going into the break, "well we all now know a position you wouldn't ever want to play behind". And everyone broke up. This was way before the "laughing man".

My little Margie was a (working Girl) at Fisherman's Wharf going from boat to boat!
Sky King was a pilot flying cocaine in from South America and worked as a Rodeo clown on week-ends!
Not only was it about ranching but also farming, Marijuana growers big time!
Spin & Marty were both "Gay" (not that there is anything wrong with that, per Jerry Seinfeld). Alternative show for Spin & Marty was Pee Wee's Playhouse. Marty always liked Palomino's but rode a gray mule, now Spin he actually didn't ride anything but Black Thoroughbred's and he always rode side-saddle. Spin went on to become the star of the Richard Simmons show..
