Yep and they can't speak a lick of English.

If there were Hispanics among the cheerleaders they were very, very dark or anemic.

I'm sure there probably was at least one in the group but after watching the 200 pounders and the others go through their first routine I never looked again..

Hey guy:....when I was in High school, the band was a pretty good gig. We had a real dedicated director and we won many band contests throughout the State of Oklahoma. We also marched through the halls on game day and during the pep rally but it seems that Grant hasn't had a band of any consequences in the past few years....You said you go to southeast....Don't you have to apply to get in that school now? I was under the impression that Southeast was similar to a Charter School and you had to be accepted by the Principal etc. Where did you attend Junior Highschool??? or middle school as it's called now.

Yes. Southeast shut down in late 80's, maybe early 90's. [I'm not sure specifically] It reopened in '94 as a magnet school with a specialty in technology. Thus the official name of S.E. now is actually Southeast High Specialty School of Technology. You have to maintain a GPA and have a good record. Lately though, the board has been making us take in Capitol Hill and Grant kids to try and assimilate them into our school to try and correct them if you get what I mean. I went to Webster Junior High. I went to elementary at Lafayette.

Southeast has no 200lb cheerleaders. And some of them can actually flip. Our teachers come to our games. There's always groups of about 10 of 'em huddled together watching. I'm just sayin', Grant and Capitol Hill aren't the only high schools in the city. There are actually decent schools still present today. Classen SAS for example.

And yes. Southeast's band does go to away games also. It depends on the distance though. If it's at Speagle, then they are there. Home or Away.

BTW. Our Homecoming is tonight. We play Guymon Tigers. It's going to be my last Football Homecoming at Southeast. Alumni were at school today looking at all the decorations and activities we had. Seniors won the spirit stick, dress up days, and Hallway/Gym Decorations. Wewt 2010.

Sorry. I thought I had given SE credit for having a band at the CHHS-SE game on 9/18. They had a small band but having any type of band today is an A+. (how many members equals a "full" band?) I did not notice the cheerleaders. I actually go to watch the game.

CHHS teachers were also in attendance during both games.

I have always believed since the demise of the inner-city schools more faculty and staff should attend events even if its only home.

And I consider Grant, SE and CHHS decent schools. If I felt different I would not have attended the 2 football games this season. That may not be much but it's a start. It has allowed me to be introduced to and talk with some coaches, faculty and sponsors.

If I have spoken ill of any school on this site in was in a satirical manner and that's what makes okc talk fun.

Sorry if I ruffled feathers........wait! If you went to SE it should be, "sorry if I ruffled your plume."

Proof of Southeast being a MAGNET School is the way the students have to Apply to get into the school. They have to be Accepted and can't just go there and start school. Grade Points....and Student Achievements are a lage part of their getting in and attending school.....However, as in anything OKC School does....there are certain conditions that can allow the student to attend....other than the above.....I'm outta this one....Southeast always was kinda strange...

My question is if SE is a maggot.........

Sorry! Magnet school why is that not noted in the SE website............

I would think it would also be recognized on or within the OKC Public Schools website.......

I asked the question...the answer was it would be too complicated to explain to someone whose child did not qualify....???? O.K. There are Charter Schools on the South side of OKC but, they are semi-like Private schools and they too have criteria to meet which a lot of parents don't understand.....Then there are alternative schools which are mainly for "Problem" children.....All these kids need an education.....Some eighth Graders don't know their Multiplication Facts...That was definitely a fifth Grade task in the old days......

Shots were fired at a car at the Star Wash Car Wash at S.W. 51st and
Pennsylvania Avenue.

No one was hit. The driver of the car then drove to the high school to

They were probably actually shooting at a car in the parking lot but they don't really know how to aim.....Also, they probably can't read the instructions since it's in English...If you want to get mad at me on this one, Go ahead.....My wife taught over in that area and I worried about her every day on something this stupid.....My Heart is still at Grant as a General but my A$% is staying away....Bullets are forever.... especially when in the hands of some Idiot....

I'm not saying you are right or wrong....

I know what magnet and charter schools are!!!!!!

I just have found nothing to substantiate that S.E. is one of those schools..

Not on the SE or OKC Public Schools websites.......

Produce some documentation and it's over

You don't have to believe me. I've always wondered why we weren't included as Magnet schools underneath the district either. But I vividly remember applying to that school. I vividly remember my friend being kicked out on account of his grades. If you want, you can go up to the school and talk to our principle and maybe she'll engrain in your mind vivid proof.

It is noted on the Southeast Home page. Southeast High (https://www.edline.net/pages/Southeast)
"Welcome to Southeast High School.
Southeast High School is a high school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that opened in 1950. The school closed in 1990, but was reopened and remodeled in 1994 as a magnet school with an emphasis on four technology programs offered at the school. Being a magnet school, students must fill out an application and be admitted to the school, regardless of which schools' district they reside."

You've got legit doubts. Ask the same about Classen. They focus on Advanced Studies and you also have to apply for that school and it is referred to as magnet school as well but it's listed under Public too. Go figure.

Thanks. You did what I had asked, produced documented proof.

I remember when they decided to reopen the school and some of my friends who were alums were excited. I did not, or do not remember hearing any mention of magnet or any other school designation until your posting. Some of the Southsider group upheld your claims but no real "proof". (You can't believe 95% of what we say).

Is the entire school remodeled and open? There was an opinion that there would not be enough money available to refurbish the entire building.

Architect2010
10-06-2009, 09:33 PM
Yes. The entire school was refurbished and is completely opened. It looks better I'd say then a lot of the older schools aka Northeast, Classen SAS, old Grant, old Douglass. It's definitely taken better care of even though the exterior could use some landscaping and parking lot work. We are scheduled to be remodeled next year as part of the Maps for Kids program. Sadly, I won't be there to enjoy it. :/

FYI, we lost our football homecoming. But today, Southeast hosted Volleyball Regionals against Catoosa, Coweta, and NW Classen. We beat out Coweta. Then Catoosa beat out NW. Then Southeast ended up beating out Catoosa for the State Championship spot. When I get the info, I'll tell you where State Championships is. Hopefully not too far.

Since I never attended one, tell me about U.S. Grant's football homecoming parade.

Ours (CHHS) went through Capitol Hill on Commerce Street. I understand that now they use Grand Ave in front of the school. Gonna go this year just to check-it out. Oct. 23.

Did Grant's route use Penn? How far north and south? Do they still have one and has the route changed?

Yee Haw.....Finally someone my age....I also graduated from Grant in 1964. We just had the 45th Reunion but, some of us are talking about maybe making it a yearly visit since we had 45 members that have passed away. When you can receive PM's we'll communicate a little more....We have (this forum) a monthly meeting at Coit's on 24th and Western. Next meeting is this coming Saturday (Oct. 24th) stay with us.....If you go back in the beginning of the Southside memories there are a lot of things you definitely will remember...

That is the problem with getting older, there are fewer of us to do it. I didn't know this place existed until my brother mentioned it and am I glad I found it. I have been away a few years; eight years this time. Live in a little town south of Fort Worth. I was reading some of the comments which brought back interesting memories. I'm going to read more to get caught up.
