Hammondjam 04-09-2010, 06:16 PM I want to follow up my last post with something a bit more cheerful. One of my fun memories when I was about six or seven was the Generals vs. the Redskins at the football field at CHHS. It was like a miniature OU vs. Texas and tensions were usually high. My teenaged neighbor, who I considered my big sister, was dating a local tough from Grant. After the game, he would gather with his "homies" and go to war under the bleachers with the Capitol Hill toughs until the cops broke it up or they got tired. Back then, they didn't use guns to fight like now. A lot of yelling and a few broken noses were the worst unless Lt. Pierce showed up and kicked everybody's backside. For the most part, I was safe from the festivities but once or twice I got knocked down in all the hubbub. I felt like I earned my stripes after that. We'd ride to the Pizza Planet on Fooge's bike(me on the back and my "sis" driving her car) and eat a celebratory pie. I had lots of big brothers and sisters at Grant at the time and it was a great time to be a little kid!

Being from CHHS most of my battles with the Grant group was at the National Guard Armory just west of Penn on 44th. There used to be dances (or were they sock-hops) regularly. One thing for sure was you did not have to worry during the dance or inside the building. Everything would happen outside. If you heard the question as to which school you attended, square-off because it has begun!!!!!

While in college through the early 60's the Pizza Planet was my weekend office. I thought I owned the place. :tiphat:

Do you remember when the Pizza Planet started and they were located in a hole in the wall at 58th and S. Penn (West side)!! Ginny's Pub moved in when they moved across the street to their new building!
USG '60 04-10-2010, 09:38 AM I don't recall them ever moving to the west side of Penn so I guess I was really REALLY stoned or had moved on to other hangouts by then. I know that they were still on the west side when I graduated college in '65. I would literally spend all night there studying since one of the managers had classes with me. I would read John Kenneth Galbreath out loud to him while he cleaned up and then we would take turns reading out loud and discussing as we went along. I ruined my eyesight in the kitchen of the Pizza Planet. :omg:

They started on the west side and then moved to the east side. The manager I knew was James Stonebraker, very intelligent. Another manager was named Wright, forgot his first name. They didn't move to the East side til the late late 60's!! Stonebraker graduated from Grant in 65' and Wright would have been very early 60's!! Kind of short, black headed guy and extremly smart!!
possumfritter 04-10-2010, 09:54 AM USG '60...That is hilarious! Eating pizza and reading John Kenneth Galbreath. Were ya reading out loud before or after the doobie? Wait a sec, you didn't say anything about eating pizza. My bad!
USG '60 04-10-2010, 10:21 AM James Stonebreaker was a super guy but I have lost contact with him. Charlie Wright is still a dear friend; it was him with whom I was reading economics in the kitchen. He ended up with a PHd in Sociology and a degree in Law. He is still brilliant.
Believe me, Possum, when we were reading we weren't smoking and when we were smoking we were reading nothing of substance. :LolLolLol I ate a million 99 cent large cheese pizzas over those years and drank a zillion Dr Peppers when reading, smoking and eating. :ohno:

I spent a couple of hours with Stonebraker at our last reunion in 2000. He has had a tough life and at that time was pretty much down on his luck. He went on with the owners of Pizza Planet way back when and made it to the top. The company went down and that was about it. I remember when Charlie married Terry Danner. His brother Mike still walks the streets of Norman hallucinating about the days of the SDS!! I went all through Grant with Mike and James. I was nowhere in there league of intelligence, obviously!! Still, they were or should I say James was a good friend.. Will probably see him this June at our next reunion......
USG '60 04-10-2010, 10:43 AM Tell Stony hello for me. Even though our discussion of it here MAY have ocurred before you got here, I am assuming you know Mike died a few months ago.

possumfritter 04-10-2010, 11:31 AM Oh my gosh...there was a chapter of the SDS in Oklahoma...for real?
Also, what is everyone's facination with Dr. Pepper in Oklahoma? Coke and handfull of peanuts in the bottle...now that's good!
Seriously...really enjoying ya'lls post as you look back over the years.

Even had Jerry Rubin come visit a time or two........
I put peanuts in the Dr. Pepper........
When I quit drinking liquor, I found I really didn't like Coke!
possumfritter 04-10-2010, 12:50 PM That really amazes me papaOU...that Jerru Rubin came out to Oklahoma. The Norman area?
What amazes me even more is that you would waste good peanuts in a Dr. Pepper! Unconcionable!! LOL!!!

Not much better'n peanuts in a Dr. Pepper. Best Cokes ever were those little 10 oz. scudders, make your eyes water, nose run, and ears itch all at the same time. Pizza Planet's Spagili wasn't too bad either.

I used to drink the beegeebers out of those lil 8 oz cokes (the real thang) back in 1962 while listening to the Giants and Yankees in the 1962 World Series on my 9v transistor radio. Good Times! Well, that was until the last inning of the last game. Dang Yankees!
Hammondjam 04-10-2010, 06:26 PM You can still get the REAL Coca-Cola in bottles and with sugar(instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup) at the Mexican grocery stores. People say it's just another sugar but it's NOT! When you uncap a frosty one and take that first big swig, you'll remember what Coke used to taste like. I haven't seen them in the little bottles yet, but I'ma looking!

And don't forget to pick up some RC Cola too :-)

possumfritter 04-11-2010, 11:17 AM What, no Moon Pies?
LOL!!! I weren't sure if Hammondjam could handle both at the same time? But for sure, a Southern Thang!
Hammondjam 04-11-2010, 11:38 AM I've had more than my share of RC cola out of those old timey bottle coolers and enough moonpies to feed an army. My actual favorites to chase with a pop were Cherry Mash's and Reeses Cups. I've even been known to put peanuts in the bottle too, no matter what kind of cola I was drinking at the time so I think I'm in good company here. :tiphat:
possumfritter 04-11-2010, 11:54 AM LOL!!!!! You are indeed in good company! My apologies for making such an assumption. I have to admit, something about your user name makes me think of the president of Iran. I didn't think you wre an Okie. My Bad!
I am still looking at your handle and wondering if it's all about Ham and Jam or your name is Hammon and you like d jam (music).
Ya gotta forgive me...I am so much older than I was when Truman was president.

Think B3, Leslie & Allman Bros?
possumfritter 04-11-2010, 12:13 PM Oh my gosh...I hate to say it, but ya gonna have to dumb it down a bit more for me. Allman Brothers Band I know. B-1 and B-2 I know (is B-3 a new secret bomber). As for Leslie...hmmmmm, I do know some Leslies (not in the biblical sense).

With the Leslie mic'd to an old tube type amp with about 50,000 watts and kicked on at high speed and all the stops pulled out on the organ's top and bottom register, it COULD be a weapon!
This guy could start an all out assault with HIS B-3! One of my inspirations.

Very close - ya just push da thingies (http://www.theatreorgans.com/grounds/docs/history.html) and the music comes out.

OMG!! You have taken me back to when I saw Cream and Deep Purple in Concert at the San Diego Sports Arena in October of 1968. Man, I can't wait til I am old enuf for a retirement home. Ain't gonna be no sittin around listening to Lawerence Welk. Nope, we are gonna do Led Zepplin and a lil Jerry Garcia and some Canned Heat with a lil bit of Vanilla Fudge and Neil Young.
village idiot 04-11-2010, 07:55 PM It doesn't matter who is playing the Hammond b-3, they ALL want to be as good as Jimmy Smith. This guy was the GOD of that thing. I was lucky enough to see him in person. Without a doubt, a life changing experience.

Without a doubt, Smith mastered the B-3 like no other. I remember a bio that I read on him that told of his days before his first "B". He worked in several odd jobs and saved up to buy a B-3. He couldn't afford the bass pedals so he drew some on a piece of cardboard and practiced his foot placement until he could get the real thing. THAT'S commitment! The rest is jazz and soul history.
I'm betting that Jerry Corbetta(of Sugarloaf) was a big fan of Jimmy. The runs on "Green Eyed Lady" sure have a jazz sound to them.
Anyway, I've played the keys since around 5 yrs old. Took piano lessons at the Hillcrest Institute of Music from Mrs. Gruver. Been in bands but I mostly just play around here at the house. I don't have a B-3 but I DO have a Hammond M-3. Hence, my handle...Hammondjam. I DO have a piano too but CableNelsonJam just didn't have the right rhythm to it. :kicking:
grantgeneral78 04-12-2010, 07:09 AM Your story about the shooting. What all happened to whom, etc?
Well things at school had been brewing up to the shooting all week. There were fights all over the school between blacks and whites, people threating to bring guns and so on. We were between classes at the south west end of the school where you went out the back door to the football field standing around talking when a groupd of black guys came running at us and James Briggs was in the group firng randomly at whoever was standing there. Randy was fataly shot , another girl was shot in the arm, and another bullet grazed a guy. There were some brave teachers grabbing kids and throwing them in rooms and locking the doors. The whole trajedy was the loss of innocence for so many of us as well as a reality check of things to come.

Randys parents filed a suit against the school -I never heard what happened on that end. J-ames was shipped off to Western Heights school...no jail time!
Hammondjam 04-12-2010, 06:40 PM Whatever happened to Gary Gruver? I have wondered for decades.
The last I heard of Gary, he had gone to California to pursue a music career of some type. I barely remember that much but according to his mom, he was doing well. I lost contact with them when I started working in the family business and no longer took lessons from Mrs. Gruver.

My 3 years at CHHS were constantly a time of staying on your toes and be aware of your surroundings. Can't recall any shootings, though guns were carried and brandished often. Tire irons, car jacks, bricks, cinder blocks.....
Fights always started because one person or the other smarted off, be they black or white.....several lockdowns

O.K., Gary Gruver and I went to Roosevelt together.....Tall Girl probably knew him well.....Gary has a brother that is an OKC police Officer and is involved with the kids in Southside schools....When my wife taught at Jefferson, he was the Police Officer for the school....I knew Gary well, but, when he went off the CHHS we never saw each other again. His brother told me that he lived in Bay St. Louis until Katrina came along....and, he wasn't sure what he was going to do but, he was teacher music as well.....That Guy was GOOD....Ask Tall Girl when you are at the meeting and she can probably tell you exactly where he is.....
Hammondjam 04-12-2010, 09:03 PM Did Mrs. Gruver live on Barnes St. south of S.W. 55th?
I think she use to live in her old studio(early sixties) when it was right at the intersection of 55th and Penn. After that, she had a house in the 9000 block, just west of Penn.

She might have known her from just being a teacher. She left Jefferson last year and had only been there 5 or 6 years...That school is pitiful....I don't care who reads this either.....they don't do anything about the gang relations
except ignore it....They say they don't have a problem and the gang grafitti is all over the walls of the school and the bathrooms are horrible.....kinda reminds me of the school in the movie "Lean on me" before Morgan Freeman's character took over.....
Generals64 05-27-2010, 08:16 PM I started going to Grant Highschool in the 7th grade (Fall of 1958) I thought the school colors were so cool. I was red and Gray all the way. Gray befitting a civil war hero.....Today.....52 years later....I was thinking about you guys and the different threads and it dawned on me that U.S. Grant was a Union officer and their colors were Blue and Gold....I guess like the Sausage company....Yep, I'm embarassed....still go for Red and Gray though.....Gotta wake up...gotta get rid of those pills...I know, PapaOU....naw, he'll sell them and make fun of me...Prunepicker...he won't know the difference...he'll think he's on a continuous fishing trip.......Not giving up the Bud though...

Like heck I will. Are they 7.5 or 10's?
Since most units were state units, they could have been dressed in blue and gray.
How did Grant get its name? We already have, Robert E. Lee elementary, Jefferson Davis Elementary, Stan Waite Elementary , Stonewall Jackson ( I have no idea what grades go there)

The pills are 10s..........the rumor about Grant getting that name was since U.S. Grant was the president during the Indian uprising they would give this school his name to keep the Redskins under control....Just kidding ....I don't know. I do know that the first principal (Russell Browe) went to Capitol Hill from Grant....
grantgeneral78 08-02-2010, 04:17 AM I heard a rumor they were thinking of shutting the new grant down because of low academic scores ...is this true?
