I was a carhop there one summer in the mid-60's. A hangout? They did not have inside dinning and often time at lunch you had to keep circling the block hoping that a stall would open. Now when I was in CHHS the hangout was the Spot. Were Hollies and the Spot owned by the same people?

I miss the triple decker with cheese they served at the Spot.

After the meeting I drove around the southside and had a bunch of memories
come to life. Grant, Jefferson, Millard Fillmore, Heronville, the downtown jail.

I took a few photos. One was the sign at the shopping center on SW 59th
and S Pennsylvania. I can't believe that the Dodson's sign is still there!
I love doing that. Most of us reading this thread have done it at some point recently.

What does everyone think about taking a Southsider Tour together at some point?

Yes Mr. Black was killed driving a dump truck over a bridge and it caved in on him was very sad. I believe his wife still lives over by sears on western.

I never ate breakfast at Shipman's. It seemed to me that for lunch and
dinner there was something hand written on a sheet of paper for the daily
specials. I don't remember a menu.

One of the first people I got in good with was the lady that cooked the P-nuts and Cashews. Whatever she needed I'd be there on cooking day. Cut school a couple of times.....you know, learning to cook p-nuts was way more important than learning the Square root of a traiangle or whatever....I was learning how to feed the world....one nut at a time......

I heard the Ice Cream truck about an hour ago. It was playing 'Little Brown
Jug'.

The first Ice Cream cars in our neighborhood on the northside - pre south -
were Renault 4CV's. The driver kept the change in a muffin tray. The
passenger seat was removed and a ice box was put there. Wasn't the
Crosley a late 40's or 50's station wagon? I think Ho Ho drove one.

Does anyone from the 60s - 70s remember the watermelon stand on the South side of 59th street between Western and Penn? They used to sell watermelons only. If you wanted just a slice you could buy it that way too. They had wooden picnic tables painted kelly green high gloss enamel. I remember they had yellow light bulbs under the awning to repel bugs at night. They also provided salt shakers on those picnic tables for the watermelon.

How about the pop machines that had the bottles resting in refrigerated (cold) water and you slid them down the slot to get em out. Used to be a gas station at Commerce and Shields with one of those and they had Toms peanuts. We drank a little of the Dr. Pepper and poured nuts in the bottle. GREAT STUFF. The station was made of rock. Found out that the guy that owned and ran the place sold bootleg whiskey out of there.
