grantgeneral78 03-22-2009, 08:53 PM Yes, I used to dance on "The Scene". They invited different schools each week. And yes, Ronnie Kay's wife, Deanna (I think that was her name), was there giving the boys instructions that they could NOT hold the girls close to them when slow dancing. She demonstrated on my boyfriend on NOT WHAT TO DO....he loved it, she was very well endowed!
HAHAHAHA...too funny!
Prunepicker 03-22-2009, 09:27 PM Definition of Doo Wop---
Doo-wop music is often comprised of four-chord progressions. The lyrics tend to be repetitive, simple, dialectical, and awkwardly-phrased. Some are even grammatically incorrect. Nevertheless, many transcend these limitations to convincingly express such complex feelings as disillusionment, desire, and love.
I think Doo Wop is some of the most romantic music... probably more than you wanted to hear from me!!
~~
That four chord progression is typically I-iv-ii-V7 with a bridge.
Doo Wop is the true king of rock n roll.
Soonergirl26, please disillusion us with more than we want to hear :LolLolLol
grantgeneral78 03-22-2009, 09:52 PM I am just glad she gave a definition, it is a salad dressing right?

Pretty close, but better.

Hair? Wasn't that a musical?
papaOU 03-23-2009, 12:42 AM How about the old black and white horror flicks. Dracula, Werewolf, Frankenstein and how about Nasferatu. Man, they use to scare the hell out of me. They use to always come on late at night and we would turn out all the lights to watch them.Nasferatu was on TCM the other night. Always have to watch even though I have a copy. That is my Halloween night ritual. I think it is the best vampire movie ever. Bram Stoker's wife would not let the name Dracula be used, hence Nasferatu. Have you seen the remake with Klaus Kinskey as the vampire. There is both an englisn and german version. I like the german. And if nobody knows who Klaus Kinskey was you should check him out. Strange dude!!!

Generals64 03-26-2009, 05:44 PM Sheesh:...you guys have forgotten the days on the Southside of OKC have you?
Can you remember when it was Fun to go Trick or Treating?
I remember my mom burning a cork and then rubbing it on my face so I could dress like a bum. Now the kids just dress like...Oh never mind..
Remember the wax lips that you would chew like gum and them couldn't get the stuff out of your teeth???? Use to go to the Mayridge Shopping Center TG&Y and buy all kinds of penny candy and then not share...then get in trouble...used to be able to buy candy by the pound not a micro ounce and a a whole pound of Starlight mints was 29 cents....How about Orange slices, fresh and chewing then when you threw them up the taste wasn't as good coming up as going down.
Popcorn balls boy they were good....Has anyone got a good recipe for the old type Popcorn Balls people would give out during Halloween???? If so i'd like to have it.....
papaOU 03-26-2009, 09:21 PM There were days when at least one home had a full bowl of candy left on the porch so you could get your own. No! I don't remember anyone taking it all.
How about the school Halloween carnivals. games...cakes and cookies that were cheap. musical chairs. Kiwanis Jr. Police keeping watch on it all.

Hillcrest Elementary had the best carnival. Heck, we even had someone get
shot with a real live gun!
We were so cool!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Carnivals were so much fun....I remember being in a cake walk...1 ticket was 5 cents.....and I won the cake. I was so excited I ran all the way home and handed the cake to my mother. She ....perfectionist.....asked who made it? I said it was Mrs. so and so...she threw it in the trash....I was so disappointed then my mom began to explain how the lady wasn't so clean etc. and, as she was telling me, she began making another cake....Icing and all ...when she was through she handed it to me and a glass of cold milk and said eat it all if you want....I didn't, I shared it with my mom and Trixie....Trixie? oh she was my dog at the time......Life in those days was so cool....so was my Mom....

Coit's for Dogs and Root Beer!
Steve 03-27-2009, 06:44 PM I plan to be there, but obviously as a 43-year-old northsider, I'm there to listen and learn and bring some southside balance to Welcome to OKCHistory.com (http://www.okchistory.com).
I'm counting on all of you to let me know if the get together gets cancelled. Likewise, if not, I hope to walk away knowing a lot more than I do today.

Hey, we'll be there if there are hot dogs in Capitol Hill. Everything depends on whether this snow is as great as the weathermen say. However, they say it should begin subsiding by noon....Watch your local OKC Nostalgia thread for daily forecast...

This is happening TODAY!!!!!
Everyone is welcome to come. Don't be shy. These extremely informal get-togethers are fun and you won't find any friendlier folks.
No one is expected to participate. If you don’t feel you have any memories to share, you can find a spot off to the side and just listen.

Good Vibes Frisky:.....What he has said is so true...You don't have to be a southsider......Coit's is just a place we think of inthe past....
Steve 03-28-2009, 11:03 AM Hey General, be sure to bring some pictures with you. I'd love to get give the southside some love on Welcome to OKCHistory.com (http://www.okchistory.com). For the rest of you, I'm very interested in old photos showing southside landmarks, restaurants, shops and events. Got a menu from Shipmans? Bring it!
jellen 03-28-2009, 11:17 AM My mom worked at Shipmans for several years. No menu though.
Steve 03-28-2009, 11:22 AM Got any photos? At the very least, jellen, you could be a big help by providing me with stories and color for an addition we'll be making to OKC History in the near future.
SoonerGirl26 03-28-2009, 12:36 PM I'll be there....may be about 15 minutes late....save me a seat!!
SoonerGirl26 03-28-2009, 05:23 PM We discussed Dave Clark Five songs today at lunch. Here is a list of some of their hits (1964-1967). Prunepicker, any of these the one you were trying to think of?
Glad All Over

Can't You See That She's Mine

jellen 03-28-2009, 05:45 PM Don't forget "Because" my all time favorite. It's soooo romantic.
grantgeneral78 03-28-2009, 06:05 PM Ok fill me in what did I miss, sorry guys the grandbabys came by for a visit and had to pinch there little cheeks!
FRISKY 03-28-2009, 06:21 PM Ok fill me in what did I miss, sorry guys the grandbabys came by for a visit and had to pinch there little cheeks! You missed a good one..............but we all know family comes first!
jellen 03-28-2009, 09:14 PM Oh man, I wish I did. My mom used to have some great pix. She could tell me everyone who worked there and how many places Mr. Shipman had in all. She was at the Reno place, there was one on Robinson, one by the Redskin Theatre and just a tiny place that was only open a short time that she'd have to remind me of the location. They had great breakfast ( since she was a breakfast cook :-)) and wonderful biscuits. Nothing else appealed to me.
jellen 03-28-2009, 09:17 PM I'll see what we can find. We kept up with all the Shipman family and many of the folks who worked there through the years.
jellen 03-28-2009, 09:19 PM One more thing. If you are interested in Coit's history, my brother-in-law and his brother began working there in the late 50's as car hops and the brother runs the one of N. Penn now. Coit's was a big Capitol Hill hangout.

Soonergirl26 Catch Us If You Can is the song I couldn't thing of!
I racked my brain over and over!
It was so awesome to see you and the others, today! Gen64 and Frisky,
it was good to see you, too, even though you're a couple of ugly guys :lol2:
By the way, the loverly and gracious Soonergirl, I tried to send you a PM
and it came back saying you had exceeded your limit of saved messages, or
something. Try cleaning your "sent" folder, or get rid of the 500 messages
I've sent you!
grantgeneral78 03-28-2009, 09:29 PM You missed a good one..............but we all know family comes first!
Yeah them 3 girls do it everytime ........guess I am a wuss when it comes to those littleones!
Prunepicker 03-28-2009, 09:31 PM I had a wonderful time at Coit's, today. There were new people and, of
course, the oldtimers!
After the meeting I drove around the southside and had a bunch of memories
come to life. Grant, Jefferson, Millard Fillmore, Heronville, the downtown jail.
I took a few photos. One was the sign at the shopping center on SW 59th
and S Pennsylvania. I can't believe that the Dodson's sign is still there!
Did anyone really go to Prairie Queen? We used to pound their baseball team
like a drum. I think the closest score was 17-3. Oy! The Prairie Queen
Schooners!
papaOU 03-28-2009, 10:16 PM One more thing. If you are interested in Coit's history, my brother-in-law and his brother began working there in the late 50's as car hops and the brother runs the one of N. Penn now. Coit's was a big Capitol Hill hangout.
I was a carhop there one summer in the mid-60's. A hangout? They did not have inside dinning and often time at lunch you had to keep circling the block hoping that a stall would open. Now when I was in CHHS the hangout was the Spot. Were Hollies and the Spot owned by the same people?
