papaOU 05-20-2009, 09:51 PM We discussed this alittle bit at the last meeting but for those would don't believe it, don't remember it or just never heard of it, check these out.

These are GREAT!!
I think the one thing all of our Southside group have is perseverance!!
If you have a question about something or someone and especially if it conflicts with given information we go and find it. [B]right or wrong!! I have seen other pictures of the two camps we were talking about.
My Dad told me that on the south side of the Canadian near May (not sure east or west of may) was the city dump. It was a free dump because the guy that owned the land raised pigs (four-legged!) and that's how he fed them.
(now that I think of it the place is so close to Reno that maybe some two legged from the north side might sneak across)
All kidding aside great job.
Would not expect less from fellowCapitol Hill Alum.
papaOU 05-20-2009, 10:08 PM Hey , everyone bet you thought you could get rid of me after one meeting,
huh? ""WRONG, I"M BACK!!!!. I had a good time meeting everyone saturday.
I'm planning to attend more of them. The question about when Coit's quit
using the Weber name, I'm sill convinced it was 68. How about Chiefs Auto
Supply and machine shop on So. Walker. "kid:tiphat:
We were familiar with Chiefs owners and sons. They were exempted from changing the name after the Chief franchise came into being. One of the owners was handicapped. Not sure if he was clubfooted or what. When they sold they got a pretty penny. Like many businesses today the children didn't want ther place!

Whew, I'm glad to hear you're back...we had already called out Rickster and his former police friends and they were beginning to check out all the old Capitol Hill dives....The alamo is Closed, Jesse's is Closed, Cattlemen's Drive-in Closed,
Capitol Hill Highschool...Closed ( to non-Spanish speaking people),they were trying to find Hollies but Ronald McDonald ran them off....Man, this trying to do Prunepickers job sux...Wish he'd get back....

Maaan, Rick, thanks for giving us those links. What a flash back. Hard to believe, isn't it.
papaOU 05-21-2009, 01:42 AM Hey SoonerGirl! Here's a kick in the pants. My ex-wife moved to Nevada to go into her families business following our divorce. Company is going down the tubes (Was worth five to six million into last fall) and she is the first of several members to get the boot. There is no work in the Las Vegas/Henderson area. I don't want to use any names but you know the Porter brothers had a sister? My ex has been close friends with her daughter for years. It appears that my ex and her hubbie are moving back to okc and will probably be purchasing the Porter's house! Sucks don't it!!!
Guess that's what I get by giving up Catholicism for Lent.
But I don't understand that because Easter weekend I suffered the stigmata as I always have for years.

Rickster:.....Heavy "Flashbacks" of the early fifties. I know this was in the late thirties but a lot of it was still there when we moved to OKC in 1952, that is cool but sad...However, the people were doing the best they possibly could and I am proud to be called a Redneck "OKIE"...how about you???

When Governor, Dewey Bartlett tried to end the bad connotations associated with "okie". He had lapel pins, bumper stickers......................
Few people are aware that the majority of the "true" okies were from Arkansas.
I love okie rolled in cornmeal and deep fried. good in gumbo too.
Fried tomatoes, okie, and fried yellow squash. Add some fried potatoes and onions. Tall glass of sweet-tea.
I wonder if........................
Rickster 05-21-2009, 08:21 PM You're right Gen64. Although I'm much, MUCH, younger than you, I too remember. I can only assume that bridge was the old may avenue bridge. And the camp they called Elm Grove was near the Penn, Blackwelder area. I know I was little but I do remember going to the one off May with my mother.

I really remember it well. I remember one time (curious kid) about what was going on down there so, I drove down in the shanties....Nicest, most courteous people I have met met...they would have given you their heart had you asked. Only wish that I could have helped them financially but, they seemed to not really want it. Their lives were simple but fruitful and I do believe that was the old may avernue bridge picture...

Hey, at least she goes from the land of milk and honey to the land of gangs and hookers. My better half's sister lives in their old family home just around the corner from Porter's old house. It is sad how that neighborhood has gone down hill, when we go to visit her I always see at least 3 or 4 streetwalkers (most of them way to young to be in that business).

Maybe she has already moved and not told anyone.
She's not young but is about the size of three or four working girls COMPACTED INTO ONE!!!!
I used to think she was frigid but I since learned she was just resting.
I could never figure out how anybody with such a big butt could have such a small mind.
gen70 05-23-2009, 11:56 AM I have many fond memories of "The Hill". To me it was an icon of the 50,s.

Here I is. Been busy. Maybe things will lighten up alittle and I can spend alittle more time on the puter. Feels good to be missed. Thanks.
Hey Gen70, check out the links I posted on page 29. You may remember alittle of this topic. I do. They were around until at least the late 50s maybe later.
papaOU 05-28-2009, 10:49 PM Around the early to mid '70's the Winchester Drive In ran the film "3 In the Attic". It was X Rated. If you lived in the apartments south of there you had a clear view of the screen and could rent speakers.
Don't think they ever had trouble with the law.

Hey!!!! Glad to see your still around Rickster. Yeah I checked out the links. I remember Sand Town pretty well, there used to be a little bar down there on the N. side of
Reno & May area that we bought beer at. I worked with a couple of guys that grew up down there. They were some tough dudes, but good people.
Prunepicker 05-29-2009, 01:11 PM I'll be gigging at Cafe do Brazil tonight. 440 N.W. 11th 'tween Hudson and
Walker. 7:30 - 9:30pm. Tomorrow at Ingrid's 12pm until 2. N.W. 36 and
Youngs, just west of Pennsylvania.

Was sure wanting to catch one of your gigs but it just wasn't to be (had grandkids). Maybe next time. BTW, how was the fishing trip?
Prunepicker 05-30-2009, 06:00 PM ... BTW, how was the fishing trip?
It was incredible! Fished on the Davidson and the East Fork of the French
Broad. We still don't know why she doesn't have a name. North Carolina is
a fantastic place to fish. We started fishing North Carolina many years
ago.
Had a guide on day one and learned quite a bit. The other days were
spent fishing with friends, meaning they went one way and I went the
other. We'd meet every few hours or so to discuss our luck and if we
wanted to try another river.
The Southside memories group and church are as social as I get. I really
don't like being around people. Family is different, but everybody who
knows us says we aren't people.
Hopefully I'll be fishing northern California and Alaska this summer.
Montana is also in the works. We'll see.
SoonerGirl26 06-02-2009, 12:15 PM Okay.....I read all the whining about the "social director" neglecting her duties! I just got back from a trip to San Francisco.... what a great place!

Yeah sure.....that's exactly why I picked that date...LOL!!! Actually someone mentioned on the thread that we usually have it the 3rd Saturday each month....so that's why I threw June 20th out there. None of the Saturday's in June are really good for me. Too much going on!!!!!

Whoa, never trust anyone that wears a bowtie.
Mom, what should I do?
A TRIP TO ALASKA!!!!! YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS..........
(well, right about that time people
A fur-trapper (who was strictly from commercial)
Had the unmitigated audacity to jump up from behind my igloo (peekaboo) )
And he started into whippin on my favorite baby seal
With a lead-filled snowshoe)
I said, with a
Lead-
Filled
With a lead filled snowshoe
He said, peekaboo
I said, with a
Lead-
Filled
With a lead filled snowshoe
He said, peekaboo
He went right upside the head of my favorite baby seal
He went whap with a lead-filled snowshoe, and
He hit him on the nose and hit him on the fin, and he
That got me just about as evil as an eskimo boy can be. so I bent down
And I reached down, and I scooped down and I gathered up a generous
Mitten-ful of the deadly yellow snow
The deadly yellow snow, from right there where the huskies go!
Whereupon I proceeded to take that mittenful of the deadly yellow snow
Crystals and rub it all into his beady little eyes with a vigorous
Circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
To take the place of the mudshark in your mythology
Here it goes, the circular motion, now rub it!
(here fido)
And then
In a fit of anger
I pounced
And I pounced again
Great googly moogly!
I jumped up and down on the chest of the him
I injured
The fur trapper
Well he was very upset, as you can understand
And rightly so, because the
Deadly yellow snow crystals had
Deprived him of his
Sight
And he stood up, and he looked around, and he said
I cant see
I cant see
Oh, woe is me
I cant see
Well.....you know
I cant see
Nothin
He took a dog-doo snow cone and stuffed it in my right eye
He took a dog-doo snow cone and stuffed it in my other eye
And the husky wee-wee
I mean the doggie wee-wee
Has blinded me
And I cant see
Temporarily
Well, the fur-trapper stood there, with his arms outstretched across the
Frozen white wasteland, trying to figure out what he was going to do about
His deflicted eyes. and it was at that precise moment that he remembered
And ancient eskimo legend, wherein it is written (on whatever it is that
They write it on up there) that if anything bad ever happens to your eyes
As the result of some sort of conflict with anyone named
Nanook,
The only way you can get it fixed up is to go
Trudging across the tundra
Mile after mile
Trudging across the tundra
Right down to the parish of st. alphonzo

'70:.....when the center first opened that corner was a problem area. There was a Sherwin/Williams stoe and a carpet store together. I was the Assistant Manager at the TG&Y store there. There were quite a few odds and ends stores in that corner. At one time, there was some sort of a dance club...not a bar though....Around middle 70's???? the exact time frame I'm not sure but yes I remember something of that sort there. In the late sixties it was a slot car store and race track.....that I'm sure of. That Center opened in 1965....Where Concino De mino's was a Safeway store.....

Yeah, they also had a exercise weight room etc....in that corner....It never did do much of anything. The center took an horrendous nose-dive and the bank financed the face lift....It kept failing and finally someone with some savvy sense came in , bought the place and filled the spots. the center used to be a pretty good center for the South side of Okc...
