View Full Version : The New I-40 (Construction Updates)
Bellaboo 05-01-2012, 04:11 PM Where on 40foward is this rendering?
Edit:
Nevermind found it by clicking interactive map!
I would like to find out a clear answer about the western end of the old i40 and new boulevard.
We'll all know by the end of the year.
Snowman 05-01-2012, 07:26 PM I disagree. Only due to the renderings on 40forward.com. Way too many new lanes and ramps at the new west interchange. The alignment are off.
The boulevard is only going to be four lanes total for both directions where they are talking about, the old i40 was 6 to 8 lanes in both directions between Western and Penn, they have absolutely no need of a wider roadbed there.
Are you getting confused with the mainline for the new i40?
jn1780 05-02-2012, 03:38 PM Perhaps it won't take 8 months to demolish the crosstown? Demolition at Western is due to wrap up tomorrow and then they move on to Classen. Original estimate was mid-May.

No, I'm pretty clear about what's in my head.

They tore down several sections on the east side in about a week, I think it'll go faster than we think.
Now it may take a more effort on the tracks and Shields.

They're demolishing it at Agnew right now. I literally drove under the bridge as they were demolishing it and concrete rocks were falling to the ground 15 feet away from my car. Kind of surprised me.

Could you tell if it was the old I-40 east bound or west bound bridge ? Thought they'd leave the west bound bridge for the west bound connection back to the new I-40 ?

Their going to demolish both eventually and are in the process of building a new westbound bridge that incorporates a westbound ramp coming from the boulevard. The frontage road will actually be going though where the westbound bridge is now.

Thanks, I drive by every day during the week days and they have a lot going on, but that have not done much at all on the east end for quite a while.
Friend just posted this on Facebook... Old I-40 at Western:

Dustin 05-04-2012, 10:51 PM What a beautiful sight/site!
jn1780 05-05-2012, 08:16 PM New westbound bridge over Agnew. I'm directly underneath the old eastbound and westbound bridge which is currently being demolished just to my left. This intersection in front of me will move north to where my vehicle is to meet up with the new frontage road.

Lettering Express will have an overhead ramp 20 feet from their parking lot. You can see the end of the ramp and another pier under construction behind the backhoe.

A retaining wall going up directly north of Reno. I think this is where the ramp reaches grade level just before connecting to the boulevard.

A porta-potty.........And another old I-40 bridge that will come down in a couple of months.

SoonerBoy18 05-05-2012, 10:46 PM When will they demolish the part thats right infront of the arena?
Roadhawg 05-08-2012, 11:21 AM I was driving west on 40 last night and my Tom Tom had no idea there was a new road, it was confused *lol* and yes I recently updated it.

Imagine if you were out of town and had to go somewhere downtown. The Tom Tom wouldn't be able to direct you from I-40. Eventually it would figure it out once you got off the interstate. Lol
Boomer3791 05-08-2012, 02:31 PM I've just noticed some small square electronic signs now hanging above each lane on the new I40. They're mounted on the large highway signs that span the entire roadway at both the east and west ends of the new highway. They look like they'll eventually illuminate to display some king of information; in fact they look similar to signs I've seen in tunnels that indicate which lanes are open and which are closed, though I can't imagine why they'd have signs like that on I40. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Lane closure signs for construction or accidents is all that I can think of. I believe the longterm plan is to have these all throughout the metro interstate system as well as the "waterpipe" sign standards. Question is would ODOT actually monitor traffic patterns? They don't really use the message boards that much.
catch22 05-08-2012, 03:24 PM Maybe the average lane speed for that stretch of interstate.....or lane closure. I am not sure.
SoonerBoy18 05-18-2012, 12:57 PM I'm not sure if this has been asked, but why cant they implode the old crosstown at once? Wouldn't it be a faster process?

They are harvesting all the steel beams to be re-use around the state.
OKCisOK4me 05-18-2012, 04:19 PM They're actually moving along pretty fast on the west end. They're working on the section over Reno east of Western next week. I drove under it (or where it used to be) on Western and it's kinda surreal since it's gone and it was there all my life!
SoonerBoy18 05-18-2012, 10:32 PM They are harvesting all the steel beams to be re-use around the state.
Why are they doing that?
Snowman 05-18-2012, 10:44 PM Why are they doing that?
The piers, capacity, lack of breakdown space, on/off ramps and the deck were the problems with the bridge. The steel beams have several decades of life left in them. Much of the other material will be go through a recycling process as well, though a lot of the other will probably broken down as aggregate or melted down.

To add a point for SB18: They are using them on deficient bridges around the state.
catch22 05-19-2012, 10:45 AM To add to those two above, it is a cost saving measure to repair other bridges. They are using all of the good parts left on the bridge to repair other bridges around the state so they don't have to purchase brand new.
Noticed some graffiti on the EB Shields exit.
Watson410 05-20-2012, 09:01 PM That's sad... It pisses me off to be honest. That's going to continue to happen unfortunately until the city decides to clean up that area and force people out..

Yeah, it's more than aggravating. I wish they could (would) do something to stop people from tagging up all of our city.

MDot "could" is the operative word more than "would". Tagging seems to be a universal problem everywhere and I don't think anyone has found a way to eliminate it. Actually OKC is not nearly as bad as most major cities.

That's pretty much my point. I'm not comparing it to other major cities, I'm speaking for OKC, not every city with over 1 million people in its metro even though there are far worse (I've been to far worse that are smaller than OKC). Thanks for clarifying though.
Put this number in your cell phone and call it whenever you see graffiti:
405 297-2535
Or email action.center@okc.gov.
The key is to clear up graffiti ASAP, as it discourages future tagging. When you see it, report it.

Singapore solved it. Anyone caught painting on something that doesn't belong them won't do it twice.

Vandalism is punishable by up to three years in jail or a maximum fine of 2,000 Singapore dollars (£963), plus three to eight strokes of a wooden cane, a punishment dating from British colonial rule.
..and they enforce it with gusto.

Bellaboo 05-29-2012, 01:02 PM They are really making some headway on the West end. Wish they would do something on the East end, they haven't touched it since February.
OKCisOK4me 05-29-2012, 01:10 PM Yeah, I went over there and saw that :-( Maybe that's the special effects side for Traber's movie, lol.
Bellaboo 06-01-2012, 10:11 AM Low and behold they are getting after the East tie in again. Last night they were unloading several big pieces of equipement and are now moving dirt.

Was it demolition equipment? Their suppose to start demolishing from the east end pretty soon. The canal will close for a couple of weeks under the bridge in July.

All kinds of equipment, cranes, graders, etc. They really are getting after the dirt work today, but they have a demo crane at the site too.
Plutonic Panda 06-02-2012, 03:15 PM It would be really nice to see HOV lanes in OKC
OKCisOK4me 06-02-2012, 04:14 PM It would be really nice to see HOV lanes in OKC
The original renderings for I-40 had barricaded thru lanes but didn't happen.
ljbab728 06-02-2012, 11:34 PM It would be really nice to see HOV lanes in OKC
That would be a totally unneeded expense based on the generally moderate amount of traffic we normally have on our freeways.
SoonerBoy18 06-02-2012, 11:51 PM What are HOV lanes?
ljbab728 06-03-2012, 12:52 AM What are HOV lanes?
HOV means High Occupancy Vehicles. Basically they are traffic lanes on freeways which are designated for vehicles carrying two or more people. Supposedly that promotes car pooling but I think it would currently be of little, if any, value in OKC.
jn1780 06-03-2012, 11:37 AM Things are progressing fast on the west end. They demolished the east half of the old Agnew westbound and are almost done with the frontage road. Once they are done moving the frontage road further north, they will then build the new westbound bridge approach and start decking the new bridge.
Bellaboo 06-05-2012, 11:28 AM They are really getting with the East end now. About 10 pieces of equipment going after it. I noticed the 'destruction' equipment up on the old crosstown deck this morning.
OKCisOK4me 06-05-2012, 12:00 PM Does that mean they're dismantling the portion south of Bass Pro and over the canal?
Bellaboo 06-05-2012, 02:31 PM Does that mean they're dismantling the portion south of Bass Pro and over the canal?
The big machine with the 'hammer point' that they used to tear up the bridge was on top of the west bound lane right at Bass Pro. Not sure where they will start, but it was up there early today.
OKCisOK4me 06-05-2012, 03:32 PM Nice. Thanks!
kevinpate 06-05-2012, 06:14 PM I am impressed with the speed things are progressing. I dinna think it would, but the cynical scoffing of prior days appears rather misplaced.
Bellaboo 06-06-2012, 09:37 AM The crosstown bridge over by Bass Pro is now coming down. They tore quite a bit down yesterday. They had a couple of those big track hoes up there early today which they use to rip the concrete apart.
