View Full Version : I want to start a campaign
wsucougz 01-15-2009, 04:31 PM If we can't get Griffin in the 2009 draft, let's get Stephen Curry. He's a little small, but would fit well with the high energy of the team and moreover our need for a deadly accurate long range bomber. He would also be a huge fan draw and bring additional national attention to the team. Some people just have IT and this kid is one of them. If you've watched him play you know he has ice water in his veins and an incredibly quick release.
Right now he is projected to go between 4 and 9 but the draft is thin on talent. If we lose out on the #1 pick, I say we grab this kid at 2,3 or 4 if he's still available.
Thoughts?
Richard at Remax 01-15-2009, 10:04 PM Two words. Ricky Rubio.
Steph Curry is good but like I said OKC needs national and international exposure. We need all the help we can get. Can you imagine the whole country of spain watching almost every thunder game.
This is why I hope we don't draft Griffin.
Durant, Green, Westbrook, Krstic, Rubio.
wsucougz 01-15-2009, 11:15 PM Rubio is pretty much a pure point guard as he isn't the best outside shooter, and Westbrook is already our guy at the point. Neither one would want to settle as the backup, nor could we afford to keep both for long. We really need a pure long bomber and another PF. It's projected that we may end up taking Collison later in the round, and he could be a really nice backup point.
TaoMaas 01-16-2009, 11:39 AM I don't think we can go horribly wrong with any one of the three. I'd love to see us get Griffin AND one of the other two, but that's just wishful thinking.
OKCMallen 01-16-2009, 12:10 PM Curry is so impressive, we'd be so lucky to get him. The way he creates space from nothing and can pop from anywhere on the court. MAN!
wsucougz 01-16-2009, 01:54 PM Bobby Knight on Curry:
Tuesday on ESPN, legendary coach Bob Knight sat down to talk about the best aspect of Stephen Curry’s game… his passing.
While most people would agree that Curry has become a superstar due to his uncanny ability to put up points, that is not what impresses Knight the most.
According to Knight, Curry is “the best passer in college basketball”.
In analyzing film from this season, the former coach gives Curry high marks for running the teams set offense. He “knows where the cuts going to be… and delivers the cross court pass perfectly.”
However, it is in transition that Knight has even higher praise for Curry. After breaking down a fast break initiated by Curry and finished off with a Ben Allison dunk, Knight comments that “there are very few players who have ever played the game that can make that pass”.
“He’s as good a passer as has ever played college basketball.”
betts 01-17-2009, 01:44 AM I must say my personal fave is a good pass, which is why I've admired Steve Nash for years. Shaq is actually a surprisingly good passer too. It would make my heart beat faster to have one on the Thunder. I realize that we may just be having a good spell, but the way we're playing right now, we may end up in NBA limbo....not good enough to rate the playoffs, but not bad enough to get many ping pong balls.
OKCisOK4me 01-17-2009, 10:11 AM Being that we have a random chance because we'll be in that ball circulator when they're doing the lottery drawing order for the draft, I hardly doubt a campaign is going to help. But if it makes you feel like you're making a difference, then by all means be my guest ;-)

The mock draft boards have a handful of players projected to go higher than Curry. I'm saying if we fall to the 2-6ish range, we should take Curry over those other players.
OKCMallen 01-19-2009, 12:04 PM OKC needs national and international exposure. We need all the help we can get. Can you imagine the whole country of spain watching almost every thunder game.
This is NOT a criteria for drafting players. You fill needs or you take the best in an effort to WIN. Not to market the host city to Spain.

I agree. While I don't get the hype and he may not be the best choice, from a sales and marketing standpoint, I think he is the best choice to sell tickets and definitely merchandise (and viewership) on a national and international level, as we all should know, merchandise and tv market are what makes a franchise real money, not ticket sales. Rubio might lead to more nationally and internationally televised games, which is good exposure for our team and OKC, bringing OKC more into the media spotlight (which was one of the main purposes for aquiring the team).

In the US, Curry is a bigger marketing commodity than Rubio.
OKCMallen 01-19-2009, 01:12 PM Rubio plays point guard, BTW. Unless we're ditching Watson and willing to move Westbrook to the 2, I'm not sure what good Rubio does us? Can he shoot well enough to play the 2? He's an OK size (6'3" I think).

Exactly and from what I understand he isn't a great outside shooter. We need a shooting guard and a power forward/center
Midtowner 01-19-2009, 02:03 PM The team has been pretty good at drafting the right folks and making good trades.
Screw a campaign (the idea of one). Leave these decisions in the hands of those who are paid [a lot] to make the decisions.
I'm very impressed by the young talent that's been assembled. Next year should be exceptionally good.
Richard at Remax 01-19-2009, 02:43 PM I am not saying that is the only reason I would like to draft Rubio. He is very good. Check him out on youtube and try to watch him during the olympics maches this year.
Plus I do not think watson will be here next year. So that leaves westbrook and weaver as our only point gaurds. But like midtowner said, Ill leave it to Presti to make the right decision. Either way we are going to get a good player.
wsucougz 01-19-2009, 05:23 PM Screw a campaign
Screw you!
Drafting Rubio with Westbrook already at the point is probably not in the cards as they both project to be starting point guards(I would think). It doesn't sound like Rubio is a good enough outside shooter to play the 2. We have 4 draft picks, so I imagine our first pick won't be used to pick up a PG, unless for trade-bait. Darren Collison out of UCLA is projected to fall to the late first round and be a strong role player type PG, as are others.
In all seriousness, Sam Presti obviously knows how to evaluate talent. I just really think teams will be sorry if they underestimate Curry in the draft. The kid is wicked retarded.
