View Full Version : Will Laredo's EVER open?
soonerfan_in_okc 03-07-2009, 05:17 PM Terahumara has a great name, but other than that it's fairly average.
Cocino de Mino used to be good, but now their restaurants are actually physically unclean.
Poblano's pretty much blows.
i think we can all agree that when it comes to mexican restaurants, the dirtier they are, the better the food.
jbrown84 03-09-2009, 05:39 PM Cocino de Mino used to be good, but now their restaurants are actually physically unclean.
Not in my experience.
ddavidson8 03-29-2009, 06:16 PM I had dinner at IHOP around 10:00 last night and the lights were on inside the Laredo's and there were people working. All of the light fixtures were in and the interior looked like it was pretty close to being finished.
Anything new since this update?
molarman 03-29-2009, 08:49 PM There's a place in Norman that is pretty good in front of Lowe's but I can't remember the name of it. I had the ceviche there and it was great.
It is called "Mamaveca's" and it is real good! Also, very reasonable menu prices! Less expensive than Tarahumara's (and I think it is every bit as good or better than Tarahumara's).
metro 05-29-2009, 11:29 AM They put a sign up on the building last week, so they have to be opening sometime this year.....
westsidesooner 05-29-2009, 12:01 PM I drove by there last week after dark and they had some lights on so maybe they are close to finishing it. It is a beautiful building, I love the blue roof. I cant wait to see the inside. And I miss their enchiladas. yum.
soonerguru 05-29-2009, 12:04 PM I'm craving some good old fashioned Tex-Mex from Laredo's. I noticed the sign as well.
mecarr 05-29-2009, 12:20 PM I predict a grand opening in February of 2010. Sounds ridiculous, but look at what has transpired.
soonerguru 05-29-2009, 12:56 PM i predict a grand opening in february of 2010. Sounds ridiculous, but look at what has transpired.
lol
OKCTalker 05-29-2009, 02:01 PM If it takes this long to construct the building, imagine the wait for your food!
I think that February date is a bit optimistic.
ddavidson8 05-29-2009, 06:34 PM They put a sign up on the building last week, so they have to be opening sometime this year.....
The sign did say Laredos, right? I'd hate for it to open as something else after all this time.
mburlison 05-31-2009, 11:44 PM My only gripe w/ La Luna is non-consistency. Have been there when it was great, but all to often not-so-much. As for Laredos/Pepes, if that is the ideal of Tex-Mex...
Prunepicker 05-31-2009, 11:53 PM My only gripe w/ La Luna is non-consistency. Have been there when it was
great, but all to often not-so-much. As for Laredos/Pepes, if that is the ideal
of Tex-Mex...
You're exactly right. La Luna is Pop-Mex. When they are on, they are great!
The same goes for Nino's. Nino's can be the best Tex-Mex in the world, but
when a new chef is being trained, forget it.
I can't stand authentic Mexican. It's so blah. By blah I mean blah.
I'll take the chance on Nino's.
kevinpate 06-01-2009, 05:51 AM I've never had a bad meal at Tarahumara is Norman. I don't visit often because of its success. I really don't like crowds, and it's often packed.
Once it reopens, I'll likely feel the same about Laredo's.
Midtowner 06-01-2009, 08:14 AM Is the new Laredo's the one being built next to IHOP on Classen Blvd?
I think your description of what's going on there might be a bit misleading.
warreng88 06-01-2009, 10:02 AM They put a sign up on the building last week, so they have to be opening sometime this year.....
Has anyone driven by in the evening lately? It seems like they put the sign up not more than a week ago and the "LAR" is already out. So now it is just "Edo's Mexican Restaurant."
metro 06-01-2009, 10:16 AM Maybe the sign was sitting buried in 3 feet of grass for the last 4 years......
ddavidson8 06-02-2009, 07:24 PM Any news? I'm coming home this weekend and would love to have some Laredos. I may have to settle for Ninos and/or Pepes.
Prunepicker 06-02-2009, 07:58 PM Whether or not when or if Laredo's will open is no longer my concern.
BUT (and it's a big but)...
will it be as good (Tex-Mex) as it was on N.W. 63rd? Authentic Mexican
stinks, Tex-Mex rulz.
Does anyone think Laredo's will be as good as it was? I, for one, hope
they don't change their menu and become a gag authentic Mexican restaurant.
Is there any concern that Laredo's will stoop to such a low?
ddavidson8 06-02-2009, 10:07 PM I agree with you prunepicker, with one exception. What's called tex-mex in OKC is almost nonexistant in Houston. I have yet to find "good mexican food" here. Everything is smothered in chili and the salsas are generally served warm with way too much cilantro. If you can see the cilantro, you've put too much in. It may be authentic Mexican, but it's not very good. I wonder if Laredos and Pepes as well as places like Ninos and others is more Okie/North Tex-Mex?

If you see the cilantro then it grossly authentic. I can't stand authentic
Mexican. Everybody tries to tell me that authentic Mexican uses fresher
ingredients.
WRONG!
My Mexican friends ALL use whatever is in the 'fridge. PERIOD!
Authentic Mexican, Guatemalen, Costa Rican, El Salvadorian, or
Nicarauguian
STINKS!
I'm sooo sorry that you can't find good Tex-Mex in Houston. Of course,
you can't find good 'anything' in Houston. Especially BBQ or steaks.
You'd think that a "beef" state would have good meat.
Houston stinks.
Been there.
Done that.
Threw the T-shirt away.
You can't even get a good hot dog at the ball park.
That stinks.
That stinks really bad.

Not to be a food snob, but if you've actually eaten food in Mexico, which is authentic, it's actually very diverse, depending upon where you are. Some of it is outstanding, some of it is so-so, and some of it is not all that great.
For the record, I like Tex-Mex too, but there's more on earth to enjoy than Tex-Mex.
And also for the record, you cannot really get good Tex-Mex in Oklahoma, although Laredo's is pretty damn close.
And if you think Ted's or Poblano's is good, or that either of them is good Tex-Mex, you really ought to go to Texas to get the real thing. Both of those places are BLAND and institutional.
soonerguru 06-02-2009, 11:20 PM And one more thing: cilantro is awesome, in virtually any quantity.

Ted's sucks. I eat there only because I have some friends who like it.
To tell you the truth, I've honestly and truly had authentic Mexican food
that was prepared by real Mexicans in Mexico. It sucks. Yes, it's very
diverse, like Southern cooking. It sucks. I can't stand it!
Has anyone eaten at the Guatemalean restaurant next to Lyric on the
Plaza? Yucko-bel grande!
I honestly and truly love Nino's and Los Amigos. Why? Because it tastes
like El Charrito, which I grew up on. Ted's doesn't come close. Yeech!
Ted's sucks.
For the record I like Arizona-Mex and the New Mexico food. Throw those
nasty Pablano peppers away! Give me pan fried Anaheims stuffed with
Monterey Jack!
PERIOD!
That doesn't mean that authentic Mexican is bad, it only means that I
can't stand it. I can't stand authentic Swedish or Scottish food, either.
BLEEEEECH!
Does anybody have a barf bag?
Martin 06-03-2009, 06:30 AM i can't stand authentic swedish... food, either.
oh man... those are fightin' words.
-M
Prunepicker 06-03-2009, 10:25 AM I'm just thinking, since we've moved the topic off of Laredo's.
Does anyone like Scottish food? I think everything they eat was made up
during a drunken dare.
ddavidson8 06-03-2009, 02:54 PM Prunepicker. You are cracking me up. I've never found anyone that feels practically the same way I do about mexican food in Houston. I really hate this town and would love to move back to the promised land.
mburlison 06-03-2009, 03:23 PM I've not found any TexMex haven in the McKinney,Plano area, yet, I'm sure they're out there. Have tried many places so far, some better than others, but I like (in this area) a kind of 'forgotten' looking place on Hwy 75 called "El Paso". (across hwy from BJ's Bar&Grill).
As for authentic Mexican food, I contend there is no such thing... my grandma makes hamburgers different than yours, whose is authentic american food? Some people are bad cooks and cook 'authentic' food. that debate really isn't worth it... I've had some food in Mexico that was beyond excellent and some that, well, not-so-much as they say now. All according to what 'you' like.
okyeah 06-03-2009, 03:34 PM I like Tarahumara's in Norman. I've always thought it was Tex-Mex, but some of my friends consider it authentic Mexican. I wonder how Laredo's compares with Tarahumara.
so1rfan 06-03-2009, 04:12 PM I think that Ted's is the most overrated Mexican in OKC and after my last bad meal there we decided to take it off the list. I can't imagine why anyone would wait to eat there when there are so many other choices in the Metro.
As for Laredo's, even if it opens in the next year, can it live up to the expectations? It took this long it better be good right?
southernskye 06-03-2009, 04:22 PM After trying a bunch of Mexican places here, we have been going to Casa Perico on NW 63rd. I think its the best we have tried so far. And whats with the bland runny cheese like stuff they and other places here serve. We are going to Austin this weekend and I can't decide on where to eat. May just have to toss a coin.
CuatrodeMayo 06-03-2009, 05:08 PM You won't find any free queso outside of Oklahoma...
mburlison 06-04-2009, 01:50 AM That's for sure cuatro...
Southern: I'm trying to remember a Mexican place in Austin just south of the Embassy Suites a mile maybe, on the west side of road. If i get the name I'll edit this...
It's Guero's Taco Bar, 1412 S. Congress Ave...
southernskye 06-04-2009, 06:28 AM Guero's Taco Bar is great. Haven't been there in a while so maybe that is a good choice for this weekend. There are just so many good Mexican places there that its hard to pick one .
The stuff they serve for free here doesn't even come close to being queso let alone good queso .
soonerguru 06-04-2009, 09:47 AM In Austin I like Guerro's and Maudie's for Tex-Mex, although there are many other good ones.
Interesting trend: New Yorkers of late have been abandoning the "New York slice" for all these fancy schmancy pizza places. I guess they take for granted how good their pizza is.
Similarly, in Austin, the new hip thing is to eat Mexican food that is "not Tex-Mex."
I would possibly kill to have Tex-Mex in OKC as good as they have in Austin.
The grass is always greener.

The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but the water bill is a lot more expensive too.
sooners83 08-04-2009, 09:29 AM Any word on when they expect to open? I drove by about 2 weeks ago and it appears they are done working on the outside of the building and could open any day (I didn't see the inside).
sooners83 08-04-2009, 09:38 AM Well I should have looked a little bit more before I asked the question... I found the number on google Laredo's OKC - Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=Laredo's+OKC&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&view=text&latlng=2517491269947523932)
They said 3 more weeks... I can't wait!

That's good news! It's been too long, and I hope it's been worth the wait.

zuluwarrior0760 08-06-2009, 01:18 AM I say his Sams Card gets revoked the first day he goes
to buy rice in bulk......
I'm kidding of course, and I wish him luck!
sgray 08-06-2009, 05:43 AM This is kinda-sorta related to the topic. What do y'all think about having an OKCTalk meet-up at Laredos when it opens...just a thought.

Hmmm I'm afraid I would choke some of the posters, and theres simply not enough places to dump the bodies, then there's the witnesses.
I guess I'll pass.lol
millionsrmine 08-06-2009, 01:41 PM So did I miss something? Did anybody say when its going to open?

ddavidson8 08-15-2009, 04:59 PM Don't change the menu too much. It was great to begin with.
kevinpate 08-15-2009, 08:14 PM purdy
ddavidson8 08-16-2009, 06:25 PM purdy
wtf?
redcup 08-16-2009, 06:43 PM Awesome, have been waiting a very long time! I have been going to Laredo Cantino in Penn Square the last few times I was craving tex-mex. Not bad, not cheap, but not bad!
My kids kept wanting us to go to Ted's everytime we got together for a family meal. We went, but I was not very happy about it. Come to find out THEY thought we liked it and we thought THEY liked it. Whew, now we never go there! We are all happy about that.

Don't let OKCMellonhead know about how you feel about Ted's. You'll be told to get over yourself.
bbhill 08-16-2009, 09:51 PM I ate at ted's once. I thought it was pretty good but nothing special. I got fajitas and the chips and salsa and it tasted pretty much like san marcos just a bit fresher and more expensive. . .
kevinpate 08-16-2009, 10:00 PM > wtf?
what, ya never known of someone thinkin' somethin' was purdy? That's a right purdy picture of Laredo's, that's all.

I see what you did there. OKCMallen looks sorta almost, but not really, like OKCMellonhead.
No, see, their opinion was their own about Ted's; they weren't insulting everyone in the metro that likes Ted's like you were because you think your opinion is so magically appropriate. Dude, let it go.
Back to topic: I'm a pretty heavy Pearl's for Sunday brunch guy, which is always fun, but I look forward to hopefully a fun alternative! :kicking:

Sorry. I got it right after posting. I'm just used to things being perti not purdy. Different regional spellings I guess.
And yes, it's shore perti.
