Finally went to Sara Sara after a delicious lunch at Iguana today.

The chocolate on chocolate was horrible. Oily tasting frosting, dry cake and chocolate shavings were stale.

I've had better cupcakes from Homeland.
If they can't do choc/choc right - naw, baby, naw...

It seems like frozen yogurt has replaced cupcakes as the "in" food.

What's "old" is new again....I remember when there used to be TCBY stores all over town, 23rd & Glade, Mayfair, The Colonnade were ones that I frequented.

It kind of irritates me in a way because it is just obvious that so many new entrants are trying to set something up fast in hopes of cashing in on the craze and/or getting bought by some larger chain. Certainly though some are not like that and are in for the long haul. So hard to tell at this point who will shake out and who will stay.

Not a big cupcake guy, but my wife and I stopped by last night after dinner at Hillbilly's. She loves cupcakes and the one we got was super dry. Not sure if it had been sitting there all day, but I wasn't impressed at all. My wife said this was the 3rd time she's gotten really dry cupcakes from them. She prefers Cuppies and Joe.

everytime I have had them they are dry. never been a fan.. but I love the location and building.
also it seems they are always really flat.. like below the paper flat.. no real top to them.

I've had an occasional dry cupcake there, but it's not the rule. Sara Sara is not the place for someone who prefers frosting to cake. I'd go to Green Goodies for frosting. But to me, no cupcake store in town (and I believe I've tried them all) has better cake in their cupcakes.

my personal Favorite is Saturn Grill.. ( which gets their cupcakes from Sweet memories now Ingrids )

Sara Sara cupcakes are dense. I think a lot of people mistake the density for dryness.

If it's not what you are used to in a cupcake. I can see how it can turn some people off to them. Personally I like the way Sara Sara makes them but I'm also not a frosting fan. I prefer the larger cake ratio.

It's kind of like fall of the bone ribs to me. I don't like them but a lot of people do.

I know the difference between dry and dense and SS cupcakes are dry. They have a neat little shop and I love the milk bar.

Only cup cake place where my wife and I walked in, ordered, took no more than two bites and got up and left. like others have said, VERY dry and lacking in fresh flavor. Went a second time with a friend and had a bite of hers before I'd order one for myself. Again, very dry. She ate about half and we left.

Shame, really like the location.

We do cuppies and joe or cafe 501 if we are in the mood for a cup cake usually.

Wait, what? Must've missed the news, that sucks! Sweete Memories had fantastic cupcakes (better than the current Cuppies and Joe ones, but not better than when Cuppies and Joe started), haven't tried Ingrid's, but I don't have my hopes up, doubt they kept Sweete Memories' recipes or anything, and are just now another Ingrid's. Oh well, better for my health, I suppose

So according to their FB page they are relocating from their nice location on 9th Street to this location on Western.

https://www.google.com/maps/@35.496617,-97.5298806,3a,75y,274.84h,80.3t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqqy-h_JZWK5sCLsG31HUzg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

Seems like an odd move to me. I don't know if they own or rent that 9th Street location. I suppose it's possible if they rent that the price has gone up and they can't justify the increase.

Their building on 9th -- like most others in that 9th street corridor -- is owned by Steve Mason.

The margin on cupcakes can't be too high - and I wonder if much of their traffic is pick-up and go, which makes the rent for such a high profile space, without really simple parking, too high to handle?

I thought the ship had long since sailed on the cupcake craze. Surprised anyone is still trying to do specialty cupcakes as a primary venture - seems you'd have to do something broader to anchor such a business now.

They added crepes to their menu a couple of years ago.... But yeah I thought the cupcake fad trended several years ago.

I don't understand. Has a new building been erected at 26th & Western? Will they be operating from a food truck?

If I had to take a guess, and I do because I have no info, that would be my guess.

That and the cupcake fad was waned..... I'm still a little shocked at the rundown little shack they are moving to though.

Yeah, you'll notice it if you drive by. Hard to miss that sign on that building. Bright, modern logo, slapped right on top of that thing. Wow.

It is also half a mile from Cuppies and Joe... which, in my opinion, serves a much tastier cupcake! Best of luck to them though...

Sara Sara has closed - September 21st was their last day according to their FB page. But looking through the window the store is spotless: The floor has been mopped, cooking utensils cleaned and put away, even coffee filters are stacked and ready to use. Trash has been placed in dumpsters, exterior signs have been stacked around the side, and the main sign in front has been painted over. I assume the credit for this goes to the former owner. Her business had a 10-year run, but when the game was over, it appears that she finished with dignity & class.

November 21st was their last day of operation, which is what I'm sure you meant.

That stinks. They just moved to Western recently. Odd location and that clearly didn't help them.

Yes - it was a long day yesterday, and I was juxtaposing my Septembers & Novembers! Good to have vigilant editors around here!

The cupcake fad is mostly over it seems, so the shops that will remain are going to have to carve out a following.

This place just had such a weird location. There's absolutely no foot traffic on that part of Western and most people driving north through that part of town are going to use Classen.

Specialty ice cream, gourmet cupcakes, giant cookies....

I'll agree, it's hard justifying $3-4 for a cupcake, scoop, or single cookie...

My wife does cupcakes, cakes, pies and breads but cookies are her biggest seller. The one type specialty shops have a hard time when the boom goes bust.

Was this the one on 23rd east of Western in the houses? I know we tried the place that was in there many years ago.

The place in the 23rd Street Courts is Cuppies & Joe.

Sara Sara was on 8th in Auto Alley next to Iguana.

I know Cuppies & Joe we have been to. I think we stopped in at Sara Sara sometime when back in town.
