View Full Version : Best burgers in Oklahoma? MrBigglesworth 02-24-2009, 04:28 PM Irma's Burger Shack Having to quote this here. I love Irma's CarltonsKeeper 02-27-2009, 03:07 PM I try to eat at every "Burger Joint" in and out of town and when it's all said and done, seems as though I always go back to "Dan's Ol' Time Diner" or Nix on N. Penn! Hard to beat Dan's french frys! CarltonsKeeper 02-28-2009, 07:38 AM Having to quote this here. I love Irma's What do you think of McNelly's??? Not a bad hamburger, just a little noisy!! Liadano 02-28-2009, 01:47 PM I've heard of a place called Nick's either on May or Penn in near 13th. Have heard from a neighbor friend that they have excellent burgers. The place is small but he runs an efficient burger joint. Go early or be prepared to wait! It's fantastic... and very, very busy. Can't believe more people haven't tried a cheddar burger at Earls on western? Now that's a burger. I still have yet to see what the facination with Jonnies is? I've had better Braums burgers than Jonnies. When Johnnies first opened and had only one location on Britton Road, close to Western (not the one that's closer to May now), oh, man! You couldn't beat 'em. Now they're a franchise and the menu's gone all fast-food. Good fries and onion rings still, though. Best burger for me, hands down: Cousin's, a little dark bar just north of NW 63rd and May, on the west side. OMG. Grilled. Homemade fries. Excellent with or without bacon. priestess 03-18-2009, 05:19 PM I've met my boyfriend in Big Ed's but after working there for over a year I'm fed up and cant look at their burgers any more. But, trust me, they are dellicious and the standard is really high. Now I like to change places when we go out. BBatesokc 03-19-2009, 11:43 AM I doubt too many people have visited Hungry Frog's, located at NW 10th and Penn, but they have some amazing burgers for a really good price. Love their burgers and breakfast too! Also like Flat Tire in Edmond, Johnnies and Nic's around the corner from Hungry Frog. LIL_WAYNE_4_PREZIDENT08 03-19-2009, 11:52 AM 1. Burger King 2. Mcdonalds 3. carls jr 4. sonic CuatrodeMayo 03-19-2009, 01:16 PM You can't be serious. oneforone 03-19-2009, 02:07 PM My Favorites: 1. Red Robin 2. Johnnies 3. Little Mike's 4. Bunny's 5. Meer's Joe Kimball 03-19-2009, 03:06 PM I've always enjoyed Big Ed's for a different reason--the bun used on the larger burgers. They have an uncommon texture---almost cakelike. Mind, I have no complaints about the meat itself. I firmly subscribe to Roadfood's assessment (which I saw in a past review of theirs) that Oklahoma City is "hamburger heaven". In that light, I find it hard to choose even a few favorites, as all the local burgers I've had have something to appreciate about them. I humbly exclude "fast" type burgers---! okcexp 06-05-2009, 11:45 AM Nichols Hills drug has the best burgers in OKC hands down, even beats Johnnies and Charcoal Oven OKC4me 06-10-2009, 02:20 PM Went to Meer's monday night! I thought it was good, but not incredible. It was nice and big. I was very disappointed in our waitress though, she almost ruined it for me. I would rate them in the top 5 at least. Pete 06-10-2009, 02:31 PM loved big ed's burgers growing up... we'd almost always go there instead of a fast food chain. anyone know where his first location was Pretty sure it was in the shopping center at the NE corner of 50th & Meridian. JerzeeGrlinOKC 06-10-2009, 09:48 PM Kobe burger at Red Prime Best burger 20 dollars can buy...share it cause its hunormous! And you can say you took the lady on a nice date ;-) nighttrain12 06-10-2009, 11:19 PM My 2 favorite places for hamburgers are Coits and Freddy's Frozen Custard. Sonic used to be #1 on my list but for some reason, my taste buds reject them now and I can't stand them. I've wondered if they changed their recipe or the way they cook them. RealJimbo 07-22-2009, 04:57 PM No particular order, because I love them all - Cock-o-the-walk Ron's sausage chili cheeseburger Earl's Cheddar Burger Irma's no-name burger Johnnie's #3 Beverly's Big Bev Goldie's special OKC really has become hamburger heaven, especially since Ron's came here. Be sure to use Melinda's XXXX habenero sauce on the chili cheeseburger metro 07-23-2009, 10:13 AM Jimbo, you need to try Nic's and Spinozi's then. Euphoria 07-23-2009, 03:10 PM I work at a software company and many of our people travel a fair bit for installations. The hands down best burger, not in the state, but in the US, according to them is the one at Nic's. It's incredibly good. Ron's is decent. McNellies has a decent burger. Bunnies is good. J&W Grill in Chickasha is probably #2 on my list. Nic's wins. Hands down wins. RealJimbo 07-23-2009, 04:14 PM OK, where are Nic's and Spinozi's? I forgot Sid's Diner in El Reno...great onion burger. onthestrip 07-23-2009, 11:18 PM OK, where are Nic's and Spinozi's? I forgot Sid's Diner in El Reno...great onion burger. I agree, Nic's burger is good, but Sids, Roberts or Johnnies in El Reno have been making awesome burgers, onion or otherwise, for a long time. I have a feeling that if either of the those places had a location in OKC, they would be just as popular as Nics or the others. BoulderSooner 07-27-2009, 07:33 PM OK, where are Nic's and Spinozi's? I forgot Sid's Diner in El Reno...great onion burger. nics is on the northwest corner of 11th and penn it is greatness .. Firefly831 07-28-2009, 03:34 PM I second (or technically 6th or 7th) Nics. My husband and I tried for the first time last week and OMG! We got there about 12:30 and had a little bit of a line. The wait was about 10-15 minutes but the man in front of us was really friendly. He said he had been going there for about 10 yrs. Nic was nice and who ever said to be greedy and get lots of napkins wasn't kidding but it was soooo good plus the fries were just as awesome! Admittedly though if you're claustrophobic it might be better to get it to go. Although we thought we heard Nic mention to some doctors at the other end of the counter that he was hoping to expand into the yard next to the building. RealJimbo 07-30-2009, 01:28 PM Nic's sounds good. I'll have to go. That's near the Hungry Frog, yes? metro 07-30-2009, 02:04 PM yes, it's about a block north of there on Penn. traemac 07-30-2009, 04:54 PM I second (or technically 6th or 7th) Nics. He doesn't want to hire more help and the grill isnt big enough to allow for more customers possumfritter 07-30-2009, 09:56 PM Best burgers in Oklahoma? The burgers right off my grill :-) DM1031 08-04-2009, 12:18 PM I live in Tulsa, but whenever I go to OKC, I usually dont get burgers, but I have had Stumpys at Bricktown, not too bad, I want to try Bricktown burgers, but they seem to be closed when Im there. But as far as Tulsa goes, there is only a competition for 2nd best, because the best you will ever eat is at Hardens at 4th & Sheridan. the contenders are: Hanks Bills Linda Mars in west Tulsa Happy Burger in Sapulpa, old Rt 66 icon and because its a national chain, I can only give honorable mention, but Hooters makes a tasty burger metro 08-04-2009, 12:25 PM i dunno man, Webers in Tulsa makes a mean rootbeer, hand cut fries and a burger. When I was in middle school we went to go play Deer Creek in football. On the NE corner of MacArthur and NW 206th St. there was a little gas station/cafe. I don't know what it was about their simple plain burgers, but they just hit the spot. Makes my mouth water thinking about them! This was 18 years ago. I just looked at Google maps and it appears to be a bbq joint. okc_smoker 08-04-2009, 04:53 PM I didn't read the whole thread so it may have been mentioned but Interurban in Norman has a burger with honey-pepper bacon that takes the prize for me (they also have the best club sandwich I've ever had). My previous favorite would have been the No-Name Burger at Irma's. evh5150 08-04-2009, 06:58 PM avoid Mike's Onion burgers off Nw expressway and rockwell. Very greasy, made me sick. RealJimbo 08-19-2009, 09:57 PM Had a Charcoal Oven bacon cheeseburger today. I'd forgotten how much I like them. IanMcDermid 08-21-2009, 06:01 PM Like what I've read here...maybe not the best but. Dan's ol' time diner on sw80th(ish) and western. Awwwesome fried onion burgers and don't tell anyone I said this but, good fries too. Obviously nothing compared to drunken fry fries haha. Oh and lots of REALLY cool coke collectables, about a dozen old timey coke dispenser from 1940's on and bottles of every make and occasion. It's a fun timeline to follow, from pull tabs to the glass bottles of the 80's and beyond. Martin 08-21-2009, 06:12 PM when was the last time you went to dan's? over the last few years, i think the quality has gone way down. the last time i went, maybe a year ago, i felt the burger just didn't taste good at all... completely dry and tasteless. unless they improve, i won't go back. sad, really... 'cause at their prime they really did make a great burger. -M okbjjpurple 09-07-2009, 06:42 PM Hamburger King Shawnee, Ok. You poor souls who voted bk and braums. RealJimbo 10-19-2009, 09:32 PM K&N Grill in the Union Plaza building - basement. Ken makes a truly awesome burger and fries. CCOKC 10-20-2009, 11:14 PM My husband's cousin and his wife grew up in El Reno and now live in a suburb of Boise ID called Meridian. They just opened a version of Sid's Burgers (with Marty's help and blessing) in Meridian called Take and Shake Burgers last week. They are doing incredible business so if you are ever in Boise you can now taste one of the best burgers in Oklahoma. tburn 10-21-2009, 09:23 AM VZDs at NW 42nd & Western Irma's no-name burger Earl's BBQ has a huge and tasty, well seasoned burger! Barry's (?) Old fashioned burger place near NW 29th & May MMMMM OKCAlways 11-19-2009, 02:17 AM I will add one more to this list: Electro Lounge the long time hipster hangout on N. May in the office building across from Best Buy is now a bar/burger joint and the burgers are delicious. My long time favorite in OKC has been Nic's and in my opinion Electro has a burger that competes with Nic's. They serve the classic grilled burger but they also serve unique variations of it. In addition to this they also offer slider versions of the burgers so if you're not in the mood for a huge burger you can get a mini version. joeyokc 11-19-2009, 10:45 PM Nics, Bunny's, and Rons (sausage burger!) mkrace 11-19-2009, 11:01 PM Yes, it's a chain but Red Robin has the best burgers. The Banzai Burger is to die for. Unlimited fries with the special seasoning. YUMMMMM! Johnnie's- declining recently Braum's - yuck Best fast food burgers- Sonic RealJimbo 11-20-2009, 02:07 PM Nelson Ranch House Restaurant at 3rd and S. Trenton in Tulsa has what a friend of mine calls "carnival burgers". They are small, old fashion burgers cooked on a short order grill. The meat is thin and gets browned through. The buns are warmed on the grill too and the flavor is from heaven. Get two or three because they are small, but they are awesome. Tulsa has many older burger joints that have top quality burgers. DaveSkater 11-20-2009, 02:08 PM My vote is for the onion burger at the cafe inside H&H Gun range. Seriously. One of the better burgers I've ever had. Plus, desert on the firing range right afterward is really good for the digestion! Bang Bang! gen70 11-20-2009, 02:17 PM The snack bar on the OKC golf course had some awesome burgers back in the 70's. Not sure if it's still there. RealJimbo 11-20-2009, 03:52 PM The snack bar on the OKC golf course had some awesome burgers back in the 70's. Not sure if it's still there. Are you talking about the club house at Lincoln? I used to go there with a friend at noon during the week and eat a burger and watch the old geezers turn the corner. We'd bet nickles on who out of a foursome would get nearest the pin on their tee shot. Without fail, the feeblest guy with the worst form always won. My friend said it was because they were in too bad of shape to walk much if they hit it in the rough or had extra shots. bluedogok 11-20-2009, 04:32 PM We always played at Hefner and they had the best burgers, it was never the same after the remodel when they went from the old, well seasoned griddle to the "chargrilled" type. I didn't play Lincoln much but I think they had a pretty good one as well. gen70 11-20-2009, 04:47 PM Are you talking about the club house at Lincoln? I used to go there with a friend at noon during the week and eat a burger and watch the old geezers turn the corner. My friend said it was because they were in too bad of shape to walk much if they hit it in the rough or had extra shots. The place I'am talking about was a small bldg. out on the course of the OKC golf and country club, just N. of N.W. 63rd between May and Penn.. I just looked at streetview and there's still a bldg. in that spot but, doesn't look like the one I remember.Anyway, they had good burgers. easternobserver 11-20-2009, 11:50 PM Every once in a while, I like a Steak n Shake burger, usually the mushroom and onion. They have a new one on the menu -- Wisconsin Butter Burger. Yummmm. Jon27 11-21-2009, 12:12 AM Alright, since I mentioned Dan's in an earlier post, I'm going to mention one that may not be as popular. I love the Cheesy Bacon Cheeseburger at TGI Friday's! It's a bacon cheeseburger, but also has a fried provolone patty added to it with the cheddar cheese. It's amazing! gen70 11-21-2009, 12:15 AM Ya know... Good burgers are just good.. mrbob 11-21-2009, 06:35 AM Went to Meers a month ago on the Harleys. What a nice ride down & back on the back roads. The Meers burger use to cover the whole pan tin, not now its much smaller and the price went up. I wasn't impressed, I like Dan's and want to try the Bunny Shack. Johnnie's is good and so is Sids in El Reno. betts 11-21-2009, 10:23 PM Not just a burger, but the Patty Melt at McNellie's is excellent. JerzeeGrlinOKC 11-21-2009, 10:49 PM Not just a burger, but the Patty Melt at McNellie's is excellent. Ha, I just had that last night, betts! I have to agree, it is quite excellent. On the other hand, the 3 dollar Wednesday burgers from McNellie's are as tasty as hockey pucks. I know, I know its a 3 dollar burger, what does one expect, but still... Don't yell at me, please...but I love Braum's burgers in the fast food category. Funny, everyone else I've met from the east coast agrees that Braum's has just like the best fast food burger ever, but when I say that to the locals I get frowns or things thrown at me. Why is that? You guys don't know what a good thing you've got. Really. Kobe burger at Red Prime. The best burger 20 dollars can buy. It is truly a 20 dollar burger. Onion burgers from 15th Street Grill or Bunny's, or Johnny's Grill or Sid's Diner in El Reno (that's all I've tried really, so I just like onion burgers in general) Meers burger is good for the experience more than for the burger, but still a tasty treat. Used to like the No Name burger at Irma's, but for some reason its fading on me. Don't know why. Theta burger is pretty good. bluedogok 11-22-2009, 11:25 AM Braum's is one of the best "fast food" burgers, we all know the service is lacking at most of the stores but it doesn't make the burger any less tasty. We usually stop at the Braum's in Hillsboro, Texas on the way back to Austin (the furthest south store on I-35) to stock up on milk and other stuff and many times that is about dinner time so we will eat there and it is consistently good. We have quit going to Johnnie's, the last few times we went when we were up there it was disappointing and my parents have said that it has declined further...I don't really know what happened, I wonder if the sons are still running them. JenniferJ 11-22-2009, 01:39 PM PawPaw's in Chickasha is my favorite, followed by J&W Grill. I also like Irma's Burger Shack. PennyQuilts 11-22-2009, 09:08 PM I love Braums burgers, too. Not the fries, though. Meers burger is over rated and way overpriced. bluedogok 11-22-2009, 09:20 PM We stopped at Meers on the way up earlier this year, it was not the same as I remember. Maybe their "fame" has gone to their heads. betts 11-23-2009, 01:50 AM Have to agree with the Braums burger as one of the better fast food burgers around. I like the pepper they put on it, and agree the fries aren't worth the calories. But they are dominated by Charcoal Oven in the burger category, it trumping Johnnie's onion rings as well. I've been disappointed in Johnnie's lately too. Either my taste buds have changed, or they've changed some ingredient in the Johnnie's sauce. MsDarkstar 11-23-2009, 09:32 AM I used to love burgers from Johnnie's but anymore it seems like the only flavor comes from the toppings on the burger, not the meat itself. Makes me think the patties are the frozen kind that goes straight from the freezer to the grill. I will have to agree with betts, Charcoal Oven is great. I'm sad that the West location was closed, as it's closer to my office. I'm on the fence regarding burgers from Braum's. It's like, when they're good they're great but when they're bad they're horrid. Also, seems like their buns are stale more often than not. |
