So from that short little speech I take it that you would have preferred TG&Y to have stayed in business and Wal Mart to have never appeared? I won't voice an opinion on that one way or the other. I will say this though, you would not be where you are today financially if you hadn't went out on your own after the demise of TG&Y. Not to say that it was a good thing or a bad thing, just a fact. You were forced into self employment which you did well at it and still are I'm sure. I'm putting TG&Y to bed, good night and good day TG&Y, and Gen/64 says nite nite also!!!

You know, Progress was a Beer made on the North side of OKC a long time ago....Yes, I miss TG&Y Variety Stores. Not the dollar type stores as we see today. I hope everyone reading these threads realize that we have had a jabbing war with each other for years...ALL IN JEST HOWEVER....Wal-Mart and Sam's:....Hmmm...Even Sam Walton agreed to the Family Center concept that was perfected by TG&Y....The other large chains started trying to make their on way of doing things and it caused the to go kapoot....Target Howeve attempted (successfully) to have a little beter class of clothing and items but, None of the big boys have yet to maintain the basic Variety Store mix in them. Sam was a Ben Franklin Franchisee and he understood the importance of the Merchandise Mix....Take the food onslaught by Wal-mart...Complete after thought....Their prices are not Really always the cheapest...Crest food beats them by a mile....Convenience and Greed is what they were and are after....Ray Young TG&Y....Specialized in what the people in the neighborhood needed....Not wanted.....He himself told me that we all want things but what did we really need????Do you really need a 60W light bulb for your lamp or do you want a 100W bulb just because it's cheaper????
If TG&Y had stay in the Variety store business they would probably be the largest chain of Stores in America right now. But, the people that let the demise of TG&Y, S.H. Kress, Ben Franklin, McCrory, McClellen & Green,Otasco, Woolworth's and every other True Variety Store is the Customer themselves.....Not being Harsh but, Wal-Mart etc. Tell exactly what we the consumer wants to hear.....Do you remember Agnew Hardware??? Up until the day they closed they had what you need...and at a price you could live with....And last but not least....Quality....I was called in to try and buy the inventory but it was too far intellectually over my head....I knew that a 12 oz....(that's right) was a better seller than a 16 oz. hammer.....But you need a 20 oz hammer to Frame and Lay roofs.....None of the big guys train their employees to be people friendly...don't take me wrong the customer is not always right....Except in their own mind......
Answer your Question...Yes I miss TG&Y as I knew it....Manly the Variety Stores....Most of the people reading these threads remember better times in the small stores...59th/Penn..59th/May..44/Shields...Capitol Hill:..29th/Agnew..29th Kentucky...44th and Walker...Reding...Moore...44th/May...Airline Shopping Center....By the way, there were of 50 stores in Okc at one time.....Come to one of the meetings and I will bore you to death about the long lost Story of TG&Y....Your store...

I can't find where Progress Beer was ever made in Oklahoma??????

Found this on Google:

John F. Kroutil (President of the Yukon Electric Company, Yukon
National Bank, and the Yukon Mill and Grain Co.) founded the Progress
Beer Company (not to be confused with the beer of the same name
produced by the Indianapolis Brewery in Indiana) in Oklahoma City in
1934 with his business partner G.F. Streich in 1934. It is said that
in those days Progress Brewing Co., Inc., a microbrewery operating
under Oklahoma State Cereal Beer U-Permit # OK-U-923 (a U-Permit was a
brewery license permit issued from 1933-1939) was one of only two
breweries in Oklahoma, the other supposedly being Old King Brewery ?
but I found no evidence of this, so it may very well have been the
only one.

Not much significant is known about the brewery in the ensuing years
but according to this rather ridiculous lawsuit Progress Brewing
Company was owned by J. S. Bryan & Son by 1950.

PROGRESS BREWING CO. v. THOMPSON
OSCN Found Document:PROGRESS BREWING CO. v. THOMPSON (http://www.oscn.net/applications/ocisweb/DeliverDocument.asp?citeID=57976)

For many years it seems the Progress Brewing Company operated at 501
North Douglas Avenue, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After some brewery laws
began to make things difficult for Progress, Lone Star Brewing Company
of Texas eventually bought out the company. In time Lone Star is said
to have created problems of its own, allegedly getting into trouble
with the Oklahoma City government over its waste polices resulting it
is getting virtually run out of the state.

I knew Floyd Schneider of Lone Star Brewery Very well.....They (Lone Star) did run into some problems and it was easier to leave town. I didn't realize Mr. Streich was ever involved with the Brewery. The building is still there and the League for the Blind use it for donations and warehouse storage....But, Progress beer was made and sold in OKC for some time...

For such a large chain of retail stores that was around for such a long time, I am absolutely amazed at how little there is about TG&Y on the internet. The most minute things of the past get entire websites devoted to them, but I've only found a handful of TG&Y store pictures, some very basic background on the history of the business on Wikipedia, and a few anecdotes. This thread may be the biggest source of TG&Y info on the web!

Isn't that odd?

Toys/Games/& Yo-yo's
Toys/Guns & Yo's Yo's

Heard them all.....No, TG&Y didn't compete with Allen's 5 & 10...They were an individual Variety store group and they only had a small handful of stores. The one on Capitol Hill seemed to have been a good store. But, when TG&Y came in they had an exact Warehousing program and Allen's couldn't compete....

Hey Bubba...where you been????I question the authenticity of Wal-Mart in it's current status. they are chasing the quick buys and quick sales....Groceries were a complete after thought for Wal-Mart.....had they left that alone and kept Sam's going the way it was supposed to be Groceries would be a main stay. Now, all they want to do is flex their muscles. I used to sell to Wal-Mart....was friends with some of their buyers from TG&Y I sat down with one of them in the break room and bought a cup of coffee from the bending machine (Yuk!!!) and got him one. I put it down in front of him and was immediately told by security that he could be fired for accepting a 10 cent cup of coffee.......That's going a little too far....I've known the guy for almost 35 years hmmmmm...what do they have to worry about?????

Pomade..............

Pomade (also called pomatum) is a greasy or waxy substance that is used to style hair. Pomade makes hair look slick and shiny. Unlike hair spray and hair gel, pomade does not dry and often takes several washes to remove—a special shampoo, though, may be used. Other de-greasers include olive oil, dish washing liquid [1], and lemon juice.

Most pomades contain petroleum jelly (and in fact petroleum jelly can be used alone as a pomade) and mineral oil, and many also contain some sort of wax. They may be anhydrous or emulsified with an aqueous carrier, which makes them easier to remove.[2] They may also contain perfume and coloring agents. A plethora of pomades are still in production today and vary in factors such as weight, shine and scent. The stiffest will have a higher proportion of beeswax while the lightest may have a higher proportion of oils.

There is a plaque on the Centennial Clock on the Northwest corner of Commerce and Walker. Took my camera for a snapshot. Well the thing had nothing of Capitol Hill past history. Just why it was there, donors, dignitaries....

Not to come away empty handed I decided to snap where Fred Jones was. While I am there take a picture of the carpet store that later became a grocery store. Moved on to where Cattleman's Mall was..................
Well I ended up walking to 25th and Broadway first moving up the north side of blocks taking pictures of those buildings on the south. Return trip was taking pictures of the north side while walking up the southside. You get the idea.

Just for General'64 took pictures of the front of the building and the TG&Y tiles in front of each door. Went around back for the sign above the back door. Could not get a good picture because the parking lot is now fenced and topped with barbwire.

How well I remember this time of the year with TG&Y. Every store was putting the merchandise on the sidewalk for Memorial Day....We would have trailer loads of Grave Wreaths. Flowers of every color and the excitement of Summer was almost there.....How many of you guys every got a folding chaise lounge at TG&Y? How about your mom and dad buying their grass fertilizer or a new TG&Y Golden T Lawnmower. One year the store manager challenged the Stockboys to see who sell the most Dollars worth of merchandise off the Sidewalk. We each had a seperate Cash Register and the battle was on. Whoever won got two (2) days paid and a set of Lawn Furniture....I drew the short straw to work the early shift.....So, I did the best I could.....However, no one said we couldn't come back and work for free.....The dad's would seem to always buy Lawn Mowers in the evening time....Yep, I specialized in selling lawnmowers.....take your choice three 7.99 chaise lounge chairs or five 49.99 lawnmowers.....My dad really enjoyed the lawn furniture for Father's day....Me, I enjoyed getting two paid holidays....Gotta be thinking all the time....

So Cool:...........Man I remember when we sold them for two prices:.....a 2 H.P. was 24.99 and a 2 1/2 h.p was 33.99.....we would sell about 30 a year (in the Variety stores) there's no telling how many the Family Centers would sell...the store on 74 the first year ordered a Full trailer truckload for the Grand Opening....

I still have a TG&Y birdbath in my backyard and a plaster bust that I my sister and I foiled for my mother for Mothers Day. We learned how to foil thanks to Decorating crafts with Becky. I bet someone even remembers her theme music.

Been reading these posts while I work. I may know some of you old TG&Yers. I worked for them from Feb 1969 until we closed the HQ building in Sept 1986. My boss and I were the last 2 out of the building. More later.

T.G.&Y. Store #37 was at NW 36th and Western. It is my understanding that for many years it was a primary training site as well as a test store. It was "my store", growing up in the area of University Heights grade school. While my folks were shopping for groceries in the Humpty Dumpty store, my sisters and I were spending our allowances in the T.G.&Y. Store. I know for a fact that this store had the first garden center for T.G.&Y. I remember many times being in the store when they had the doors open to the basement stock room. The doors were in the middle of an aisle and would be illegal nowadays because they would be considered too dangerous. You could have just fallen right into the basement if you weren't paying attention.

I was caught one time by the son of the store manager, shoplifting model car tires. He made me give them to him and promise never to do that again. I ended up working with him at T.G.&Y. HQ years later. Mentioned by someone else earlier, I too remember the smell and taste of freshly roasted spanish peanuts and cashews. Mmmmmm.

Bring it on! I'm one of those hated north-siders. Forget that I was pretty much a "Britton Greezer". I grew up one of the ;poor kids at John Marshall H.S. and we looked at the kids from The Village and Nichols Hills as rich.
Anyway, I was happy to get work at the T.G.&Y. HQ office in 1969. That gave me a way to escape living on the southside temporarily.

Was there a TG&Y in the shopping center on S.W.59th and Penn.? Was it still there when "Bud" had the "Big Red Shop" in the center?

Fighting the FLU...man this is horrible. The store was next door to the Humpty Dumpty about mid way in the center. I was in Texas when "Bud" was there. I did (over the years) have to deal with Bud ........... could be a tremendous pain if he tried just a little. The store closed in the late 70's, early eighties and a ladies dress shop was there for a long time. Jim Kelley originally opened the store in the late fifties, early sixties....I managed the store in '68 - 71......Really like the store and the Job. I have always wondered what would happen if a developer with a "dead" center would go back and re-develop the old centers with the basic tenants...i.e. Drug Store, Grocery store (family owned) a true Variety store...ladies/men's apparel stores. a Dodson's type Cafeteria. I believe the consumer is NOW "tired" of all the "hype" and Glitz. they seem to just want NO turmoil and a simple place to do their daily shooping...Look at 59th/Western.HMMMMM

When did Griders become a Mexican Buy For Less? I go by there regularly but just noticed the change Thursday.

February. The owner of Buy for Less is doing exceptionally well in this market. He is a hard guy to deal with but is a good businessman....Mrs. Grider maintained her office I think.....

Who else worked in the TG&Y HQ on this thread? When I went to work there in 1969 the men all had to wear white shirts and ties and the women all had to wear dresses or skirts.
