View Full Version : Skydance Bridge
Rover 03-04-2012, 10:53 AM I think it would be cool to use strings of light where the cables were to be. At night, it would be stunning. Their movement in the wind would be interesting. Plus, it would add to an already interesting light and color show. Would be relatively cheap.
OKCisOK4me 03-04-2012, 06:58 PM I like the pics looking to the north toward downtown....which will all be green before too long!
Bellaboo 03-04-2012, 09:58 PM I think it would be cool to use strings of light where the cables were to be. At night, it would be stunning. Their movement in the wind would be interesting. Plus, it would add to an already interesting light and color show. Would be relatively cheap.
That 's a good idea. Who do we talk to ?

:iagree: I think that could satisfy the majority of the people who think the original design was significantly better than the final product.

The thought of this makes me think redneck christmas tree. No thanks.

Cheap is right, as in it'd look cheap. Mrktguy is right, a redneck Christmas tree. The final design is better on its own. It's not the Jeff Foxworthy bridge.
Just the facts 03-05-2012, 10:30 AM Before pooh poohing the idea, maybe a google search of illuminted suspension bridges is in order. There are several around the world (like in San Francisco and Japan) that look really good.

I have seen any number of structures around the world using lights to do similar things very effectively. I never really thought of Parisians as rednecks for doing it though.
Some Okies need to see more of the world. Remember, everything's up to date in Kansas City. ;-)

A naming rights opportunity??? LOL
Maybe Larry the Cable Guy would be interested, heard he made several million last year...that way we could at least get the cables back in name...
Bullbear 03-05-2012, 02:42 PM Any idea why the Bridge is not lit up on a regular basis?.. seems everytime i drive under it is not lit up?

Yeah! What Rover said........so there! Redneck Christmas tree indeed.....
Bullbear 03-05-2012, 07:34 PM I preferred the design with the cables it make it look more like a bridge.. but I don't think we need to hang christmas lights from it.. YIKES!.. but why is it never lit up?.. it is very dark right there on the new crosstown.. It needs to be turned on full time

When they get the permanent power source run to it they will light it up. I think sometime in April is what they said.
Rover 03-06-2012, 11:28 AM What is redneck is thinking the only lights you can string on it is "Christmas lights". Gosh golly gee, we don't have to go buy our lights at Walmart for $1.99.
Bellaboo 03-06-2012, 12:29 PM Bet these guys could do it.

Vision is not what you look around and see today, it's having the ability to look into the future.
Bullbear 03-06-2012, 03:31 PM well no I didn't assume you would get actual Christmas Lights at Wal~mart.. I was implying that is what it would LOOK like you did.. I think the cables would look great on it.. I don't think Led Ropes.. or christmas lights or whatever would look good at all. just my opinion..
Bet these guys could do it.

Hmmm... I like those. Kinda.
Dustin 03-08-2012, 07:47 PM Is it lit up now? Someone on facebook posted a photo of it lit up blue yesterday. I'm not sure if it was a recent photo.
Bellaboo 03-20-2012, 04:58 PM I came through at 4:25 pm after work and the bridge was all lit up and changing colors. The lights were very bright but it was overcast. Guess they now have power run to the area.
Watson410 03-20-2012, 05:24 PM I sure hope so!!! Maybe they're trying to showcase it for President Obama tomorrow. I heard he's attending the Thunder game tomorrow night.

Just passed the bridge today (03/20/12) @ 6:15p and the lights are on and changing colors...
swilki 03-20-2012, 11:21 PM I sure hope so!!! Maybe they're trying to showcase it for President Obama tomorrow. I heard he's attending the Thunder game tomorrow night.
Yep, from my understanding this is the only reason it is lit up. We need more big wigs to come into town so we can enjoy it year round!
Bellaboo 03-22-2012, 06:28 PM I came through after the game last night......going westbound. The bridge was slowly changing colors, and it was outstanding ! There is some obstruction with the Shields bridge, but wasn't really bad, we thought it was very cool, and did not cause the distraction that I thought it would.
The interstate in that area also had the street lights on, so I believe the power issue is no more.
Sheetkeecker 03-22-2012, 08:39 PM I love this bridge. Just the way it is. The proposal was nice, although the guy wires (cables) looked kind of silly to anyone who knows construction. I think they did a marvelous job and wish people would not say bad things about it. People I have shown it to from out of town are very impressed with it. And I suspect in years to come the development around it will be a nice focus for the park that is to come. Can't wait to take my kids there.
dankrutka 03-23-2012, 12:00 AM Are the lights still on or was that just a temporary deal for the Prez?
Bellaboo 03-23-2012, 08:09 AM Are the lights still on or was that just a temporary deal for the Prez?
I'll let you know later tonight, I'll go through there again after the game. But it is not lit up in my morning commute, but the street lights are now on permanently.
Bellaboo 03-24-2012, 12:20 AM No lights on the bridge, but the street lights on the interstate were on.
Questor 03-24-2012, 11:15 AM Yeah, no lights last night. Does anyone know when the thing will be permanently illuminated?
Spartan 03-24-2012, 01:32 PM I don't think ever, but I do think it will become more frequent.
Teo9969 03-24-2012, 02:58 PM I don't think ever, but I do think it will become more frequent.
Why would it NOT become a permanent thing (and by permanent I mean on starting at dusk through dawn)?
If it won't be on for good, what becomes the impetus for turning it on? I could see having it on the weekend days: Fri/Sat/Sun. But then after that, what's the reason to turn it on during the week? Thunder games, OKCPhil concerts, festivals, holidays? After you grant a variety of piddly reasons to turn it on, you may as well have it on every night.
dankrutka 03-24-2012, 03:38 PM I also am not sure why it would not be on every night...
MikeLucky 03-24-2012, 04:48 PM I don't think ever, but I do think it will become more frequent.
C'mon sparty.... do your homework...

dankrutka 04-01-2012, 09:23 PM Where along the highway does it spell out "OKLAHOMA CITY"? It would be great if that was right next to the bridge (maybe it is)... I just think it would make a positive impression to those that are passing through...
Watson410 04-01-2012, 09:49 PM the "OKLAHOMA CITY" starts as soon as you pass under the Skydance bridge. On both sides East bound and West bound. It would be a really cool shot if someone can take a picture of the words "Oklahoma City" and the Skydance bridge.
SoonerBoy18 04-01-2012, 10:00 PM Dont they still have to connect the suspension cable things to the bridge?
ljbab728 04-01-2012, 10:19 PM Dont they still have to connect the suspension cable things to the bridge?
No, the design was changed before construction started. They eliminated the suspension cables and made it self supporting.
Bellaboo 04-10-2012, 08:13 PM Driving by tonight, they are putting wooden sides on the bridge.......it looks chest high at that..... no worries about someone falling through.
I've noticed in the past week that 4 or 5 workers are on the bridge every day around 4:30 when I roll through there.
metro 04-11-2012, 11:16 AM Noticed that as well.
Larry OKC 04-11-2012, 01:44 PM Yeah, no lights last night. Does anyone know when the thing will be permanently illuminated?

Q. Hey Don. Could you find out if the (SkyDance) sculpture over Interstate 40 downtown is going to be lit at night on a nightly basis any time soon? It was on temporarily during the past holiday season. It really looked great.
Greg
A. Kristy Yager, spokeswoman for the city of Oklahoma City, says: “Yes, we plan to starting lighting it ... once SkyDance opens to the public. I expect this to happen in late April or May.”
Thunder 04-12-2012, 01:24 PM It's about time they start to lighting it very soon. I kept driving under it being very disappointed.

I'm in the khakis with the tripod. I took over 600+ photos of the ribbon cutting and tonight. Plus video. The Mayor showed up, all casual. Talked to him briefly.

gurantula35 04-24-2012, 01:58 AM I just got back with a group of friends from college. My friends included people from California, Texas, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, and everyone of them thought it was an awesome addition to the city. They couldn't stop complimenting how cool it was. Made me proud. Love my city.
SoonerBoy18 04-24-2012, 07:16 AM It looks great but I wish they could have made to where it had to be connected by suspension cables, it sort of looks incomplete but its still a great addition to the City.
