I wanted to have the Skydance Video that goes with the photos done days ago, but here I am frantically working on it. I have barely gotten anything done. I hoped to have it finished before you start blogging about other things and it's old news. It will be two parts. I'll go straight into the New Year's stuff which dwarfs what I'm working on now. Then there is video from Sunday afternoon. I have to do all this with the four hours at the most I have for spare time before I have work a full-time job.

Will, don't worry about timing as far as my blog stuff is concerned. I'm more interested in a comprehensive overview of your work, anyway, not just one or two things that you've done. Take your time, my friend, and get some sleep.

Look real closely to the bridge where people walk across. Are they done with the side rails? If they are, then I'm going have to give it an official Fail grade. So, are they done or not? Little kids can easily fall through those beams. :-(

No. Code requires railing that prevents a 4" sphere from passing through. The RR requires additional caging to satisfy their fear of people throwing things on their sacred tracks. Hopefully they'll use a cable-railing system to reduce the gloppyness... we'll have to wait & see.

If I didn't get preoccupied at work, part 2 would be uploaded but it somehow slipped my mind to start it. I use a remote desktop iPhone/iPad app to do it while at work. The second part should be done before 11am. (the night shots)

They've done a fantastic job of lighting that structure... Everything looks very uniform and certainly bright and vivid.

One of the parts I like the best in that video is the number of people walking to see it. Give people something worth walking to and they will do it.

I wondered looking at my footage, how those LED panels will hold up when they're covered in ice or if they even work under those conditions. (imagine the chunks falling off.. they must have to keep it closed)

Will, you just keep getting better and better. In terms of artistic accomplishment, length of video, and views shown, this one approaches perfection. Intended as constructive criticisms: If it was me, I would eliminate the soundtrack which is basically windy noise and substitute some appropriate music background, but that's just me. Some fading labels over the various crossings over I-40 for identification (e.g., Walker, etc.) would be nice, too. I might also eliminate the dust blowing elements since they are reminiscent of Dust Bowl days and wouldn't have been present except for the fact that the video was made during highway construction on a windy day and will not be present when the road is done. But I don't mean to detract ... this is an extraordinary and exceptional video, Will, and I give you my heartfelt congratulations.

In this video, too, are the first showings I've seen about how ODOT has used dark red highlights on the overpass bridges ... and that's very nice looking, in my opinion.

Doug is right, you are finessing it pretty well.

I would add music, but that's one more extra thing added on. I have no clue what "music" to add and all progress comes to a stand still. Had the same issue with the timelapse videos.

There's a two-part New Year's video that will be up this morning. Part 2 is uploading now. Watch for it. It's all the night-time stuff and I didn't spend a lot of time on it.

The Sunday afternoon video of the Devon construction site will be after this. See how long it takes to get this done? Almost a week later. If I added all the extra stuff people expect to see in the videos, it would take a month.

Wow. I didn't realize there was lighting on the side of the Devon auditorium (?).

Kilgore, I thought that too at first but then after watching more footage realized the stainless panels on the side of the auditorium were just reflecting the light from across the street near the band shell.

There were several rotating LED lights... In part of the footage you could even see the outline of trees on the auditorium.

That's a good thought. Do they have a heating element in the bridge to keep it above 32 degrees or will this present itself as a future problem during certain winter storms?

I'm sure they had it all in mind...I hope so. Does anyone still have access to the blueprint or schematics? There may be heating wires inside those steel. If not....it may end up being demolished when reality slap the developers in the face.

Just drove I-40 East for the first time around 10:30pm. Even in the pitch dark the bridge is still impressive. The view isn't as far away from downtown as it seemed.

That was my first impression, how close it was compared to how far away the pictures made it seem. Obviously pictures can't describe the in-person view and this is a prime example.

It appears to me that if any ice fell it would mainly fall directly on the bridge instead of the roadway. Ice can fall on roadways from many bridges, overhead signs, etc. I doubt that any special arrangements have been made for this bridge in that regard.

Sorry, but the concerns are not justified. Ice falls from overhead structure over freeways in the winter all of the time. My car has been hit before. I've never heard of any place that warmed structures over freeways to prevent that. It's just one of life's risks.

Excuse me, you are forgetting what kind of bridge this is. Not only it brings dangerous risk to the motorists, the walking humans down below such monstrous beams of steel may end their lives with pointy icicles lodged in their brains. There will be a lot of traffic under that steel of bird, so yes, the concerns are greatly justified.

Pete, you always have access to the important stuff on papers. Can you determine if there will be some sort of heating devices throughout the structure?

Why aren't the LED lights on? It was dissappointing driving under it and being barely able to see it last night.

I don't think they have the permanent electrical hookups built yet. Will said it was running off a generator on New Year's.

Also, they probably want to minimize distractions until motorists get used to all the changes.

I was surprised to find the Skydance was not lit up last night, too. Even if they can only light it up for special occasions right now, one would have thought that the first night of the new highway being open would be a special occasion.

Will, I've remixed your splendid video by deleting the background noise and replacing it with the 2nd movement of Beethoven's Symphony #7 (the music used at the climax of the superb movie, The King's Speech) and by shortening its original 15:02 minutes to 9:34, the length of the tune as performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Carlo Maria Guilini conducting. I've also moved some parts around a bit. Sadly, my software didn't produce sharpness as good as your video did (particularly as to the tubing closeups), but it is good enough to give you at least my amateuristic impression of what I was talking about earlier in this thread. My software doesn't have the capacity to add labels to existing videos (e.g., Walker Bridge Looking West) or I'd have done that, also. Will, I think that you can make a living or at least some serious bucks by your "hobby," my friend ... I encourage you to go for the gold ... you are that good.

I was reading through a couple pages to make sure this hasnt been asked, but i drove last night under the bridge, definitely alot bigger in person and the downtown view was much close than anticipated. my question is, is there a way to get to the skydance bridge yet? me and a friend wanted to walk under it and look at it up closely. we had no idea how to get there though.

NO, again this area is a work in progress and will be several more years before the park is ready.

i realize the park isnt going to be ready for a few years. just didnt know they werent going to let anyone near the bridge until the park is open

You can definitely get near it; in some of the videos you see people even walking on it, although it's far from complete.
