OKLAHOMA CITY -- Troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are warning Oklahomans about a new phone scam.

The OHP has received numerous telephone calls from alarmed citizens who have gotten calls from people saying there has been a serious wreck along a highway and that their phone number was listed on a mobile phone found inside a vehicle involved in the crash.

The scam victims are instructed to dial an exact sequence of numbers beginning with *72.

AT&T says that *72 is a custom feature for call forwarding, causing incoming calls to ring another number. These calls can be forwarded to a land line or pay phone and even override the inability of cell phones to accept collect calls, AT&T said.

A third party will accept the charges for these calls, and they will be billed back to the scam victim.

Anybody who gets one of these calls should not call the number given. Report these calls to a local law enforcement agency.
