View Full Version : MidTown Deli
metro 08-28-2008, 08:45 AM Just an update, the deli proposed for N. Walker in the building just north of 1492 will be called MidTown Deli. It is supposed to open in October. Renovations are underway. They have a temporary sign out front. I took pictures yesterday and will post them later today.
mecarr 08-28-2008, 09:24 AM Any update when the sushi restaurant will be open?
EvokeCoffee 08-28-2008, 09:35 AM I was talking to Meg Guess a few days ago and she said that it has taken quite a awhile for designs to get through the Midtown Design Committee which is probably why the deli has been taking so long. I'm glad to hear that they have finally started!
I look forward to seeing the final product - but still with it was Cafe Evoke instead!
..be bold
betts 08-28-2008, 06:33 PM Yay! I love good delis. I just hope it's a real one, and not a sandwich shop masquerading as a deli. Boil your bagels, and leave off the croissants!

A friend told me the other day that it was a deli - "like, meat hanging from the ceiling deli."
Now sure exactly what she is describing but I think it will be much more than, say, CityBites..
Steve 08-28-2008, 09:01 PM I'm think there won't be any sushi
taylor83 08-29-2008, 07:43 AM I heard that as well Steve. I also heard that it might be a wine bar type of restaurant, which IMO would be fantastic.
metro 08-29-2008, 08:14 AM Forgive the image quality, it was taken on my iPhone when the sun was glaring in my face.

mecarr 08-29-2008, 12:55 PM There won't be a sushi restaurant across from 1492? I thought they had been remodeling that for months.
Deli Head 10-21-2008, 04:31 PM Metro,
Quick update from the owners of Midtown Deli, Dan & Bridget Lindsey. Things are going great, but we're not going to be open before the end of the year. It may be another 3-4 weeks before we can even start construction. Just taking extra care in delivering our "baby" to the world! Can't wait to meet and serve everyone in Midtown!!
Deli Head
metro 10-23-2008, 09:16 AM Anyone know the latest on MidTown Deli? I haven't driven by in awhile. I may have to swing by today at lunch.
mecarr 10-23-2008, 04:13 PM so we'll have three delis within a quarter mile? Subway, Prarie Thunder, and now Midtown deli.
Did Subway put in a deli?
Steve 10-23-2008, 04:20 PM There's a Subway in the Plaza Court building. Not sure I'd call Subway a deli - but you must remember I'm originally from New York so my idea of a deli is very, very, very different.
jbrown84 10-23-2008, 05:05 PM I think we can always have more delis. And if the local places put downtown Subway #5 out of business, good for them!
So many dang Subways. Why won't any other chains come in downtown??
bluedogok 10-23-2008, 09:02 PM Subway is a sandwich shop, not a deli....

I can tell you that MidTown can't wait to meet you.
As least me, that is =)
metro 10-24-2008, 09:07 AM Well, I drove by yesterday and it didn't look like a ton of progress has taken place yet. I took this photo holding phone out window so sorry for distorted image but you get the idea. The only progress I've seen in months is the permanent sign on the building vs. the vinyl banner shown above. The interior didn't look like anything had been done.

Oh Prarie Thunder and Subway aren't deli's to the poster above, this will be a true deli, not a bakery or sandwich shop.
Subway is a sandwich shop, not a deli....
Exactly.
I haven't been to Prairie Thunder, but it sounds like a sandwich place, too. I have heard that they are kind of bread nazis though. :)
jbrown84 10-24-2008, 10:56 AM Prairie Thunder is more a dessert, pastry, & bread place. I think they do have a couple sandwiches on the menu, but they are from from being a deli or a sandwich shop.

aka a bakery.............
jbrown84 10-24-2008, 12:44 PM Exactly.

metro 04-23-2009, 09:46 AM Haven't heard, drove by yesterday and doesn't appear to be too much longer. All the cases were still empty. I'm guessing 2 weeks tops, probably 1 week?
metro 04-29-2009, 10:05 AM Anyone know if they are open yet or when they are opening?
BoulderSooner 04-29-2009, 10:30 AM Anyone know if they are open yet or when they are opening?
not yet but they have the tables and chairs all set up so it should be son
LakeEffect 05-08-2009, 08:18 PM They look even closer to opening, but I noticed an unfortunate flaw today. They placed blue drapes across the windows in the seating area. This effectively ends the interaction with the street - people walking or driving by won't be able to see people inside, and will most likely decide that it's too much work to find out if people go there...
Sounds simplistic, but interaction with the street is an extremely important idea. I think it's probably one of the big reasons the restaurant across the the Federal building at 6th & Hudson failed - the tinted windows didn't allow passersby the opportunity to see who was inside.
bluedogok 05-09-2009, 08:06 AM Maybe those drapes are for the morning sun?
BoulderSooner 05-13-2009, 04:18 PM Maybe those drapes are for the morning sun?

I noticed that too - meant to make a comment here.

And a reminder, tonight is the Urban Neighbors May Social from 5:30-7:30 at MidTown Deli, so if you all want to check it out before it opens, here's your chance....
BoulderSooner 05-14-2009, 05:10 PM Just a note to to some hang ups with the city they are now not opening until Monday
The U.N. Social is still on for tonight which should be a good preview.
metro 05-18-2009, 10:38 AM So are they opening today? I was unable to attend the UN social to to schedule conflict. Did you go Boulder? Reviews?
Martin 05-18-2009, 10:48 AM happened to be driving through midtown saturday morning and saw the 'opening monday morning' sign... i plan on stopping by today after work.

mecarr 05-18-2009, 10:37 PM My wife and I ate there today for lunch. The inside is very spacious and I appreciated them having an outdoor patio area and also a salad bar. I ordered the turkey sandwich which came with a very small side of pasta salad. My wife ordered a pizza which she said was good but it was small. The total was $19, which I felt to be a little bit on the expensive side. My sandwich which came with either chips, pasta salad or patato salad was a little over $8.
The staff was very friendly and they looked like they were eager to please. All in all, the place offered some decent, but standard, sandwiches at an above average price.
foodiefan 05-19-2009, 09:36 AM has anyone checked out the deli case?? Boar's Head by the pound?? What kind(s)??
Martin 05-19-2009, 09:44 AM checked out the deli case yesterday...
not a huge selection but not bad... however, i did go on day one so it may not be representative of the final product. as expected, pretty much everything was boar's head... most of the typical choices: a couple of options of roast beef, several turkey/chicken options, mortadella, soprasata, capicola... but no prosciutto. i didn't really check out the cheese... from what i could tell, they had the basics but not much beyond that.
staff was friendly, helpful & attentive... but i did get the impression that, at least for now, the deli case plays second fiddle to buying pre-made sandwiches.

onthestrip 05-19-2009, 04:07 PM It may just be me but does anyone think that this building would make for a great bar...that is if Midtown Deli ever goes out of business.
Martin 05-19-2009, 04:18 PM well... they've got a bar in the place.
went back for lunch today. the sandwich was pretty good... but for the money not amazing. i'll go back in a few weeks when they're firing on all cylinders.

mecarr 05-19-2009, 11:35 PM It may just be me but does anyone think that this building would make for a great bar...that is if Midtown Deli ever goes out of business.
The building was originally going to be a winebar, but that got cancelled.
metro 07-20-2009, 09:53 AM Well I finally got to eat at MidTown Deli. I went with my wife and parents this past weekend. There was only 2 other couples in the place when we went and about 5 staff members. It was awkwardly quiet. I went with the signature Monterrey Club, my wife the Italian, and my parents had the Reuben and a Chicken Salad. We all thought the sandwiches were top notch. The quality Boars Head and other meats definitely are noticeable. The Club I would say is average compared to other places, but the Italian I thought was excellent. My dad said it was the best Reuben he had had and my mom (a chicken salad eater) said it was one of the best she had. The service however was HORRIBLE. The owner and his wife were standing around not doing anything really, he only came by after my Dad wanted to ask him questions about the history of the building, etc., and even then he didn't ask how the food was or anything else really. Our waiter was horrible, took long periods of time before he'd come out with menu's, drinks, etc. and wasn't very presentable with his personal hygiene, (his pants kept sliding down and he'd have to hike them back up right in front of us, dirty appearance, etc. I'll definitely be back to give them another shot, but the service better improve.
Martin 07-20-2009, 10:05 AM well i finally got to eat at midtown deli...
that's odd... did you go at night? because that's an entirely different format than what i experienced a couple months ago. at lunch, there were no waiters to hand out menus as you would just enter the queue and order up front. drinks were self-serve at the fountain and the only waitstaff interaction was when the order was brought to the table.

metro 07-20-2009, 10:11 AM Yes, it was around 7pm at night. They make you sit down for dinner, even though it's the same menu. They were to have a live band playing at 9pm. We stayed until about 8:30 and it picked up some, probably 3 tables was all though. Very strange ambiance.
OKCMallen 07-20-2009, 09:27 PM I've heard nothing but positive things about the place as far as lunch goes. I need to get over there...
Midtowner 07-20-2009, 09:32 PM I had a sandwich there. Will definitely be back. Very close to the office, so that's a plus.
Steve 07-20-2009, 10:19 PM I've heard positive reports from everyone I know when it comes to MidTown Deli.
OKCMallen 08-27-2009, 12:23 PM Had the chicken pesto parmesan just now...it was tasty, but nothing amazing. Pasta salad was slightly below average. Service was extremely friendly and helpful, but food was a touch slow for us compared to everyone else (I think we were the exception). Nice atmosphere...I'll go after for a beer and a sammich sometime.
lennygoogle 09-02-2009, 03:29 AM I have gone at odd times but felt the food was pretty good. But the thing I love is the deli. Being able to purchase the excellent boars head meats for the same price as the crap they sell at Super Target is nice. Had a few drinks at the bar and it was enjoyable.
jbkrems 09-02-2009, 11:29 AM I went in there once for lunch, and although I found the food good, I thought the service was rude and discourteous. I will not go back.
BBatesokc 09-15-2009, 11:03 AM Went there for lunch last week with some friends. Great little place with a fun and clean atmosphere.
I had the All-American on croissant - EXCELLENT!
Pretty slow when I got there at 11:30am. By 12:15 they were hoping with a line to the door.
Went with Max Fairchild of AutoMax (yeah, I'm name dropping). He is addicted to that place now that he's moved his corporate HQ to the area. He probably goes 2-3x a week.
metro 09-15-2009, 01:30 PM That's funny, that's like name dropping Chad Stevens or Paul Meade or the Del Rancho guy.
BBatesokc 09-15-2009, 03:09 PM Dude, do you know Chad Stevens?
Just kiddin, I just figured I'd point it out before someone else did. Any chance he name dropped he had lunch with me! I'd hare to see your comparison to that.
Steve 09-15-2009, 04:45 PM I'm not sure what lunch with Chad Stevens would be like. But I wouldn't say no to it. Sorta like flying in a helicopter. I don't ever want to do it again, but I'm happy to say I've done it.
