View Full Version : BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Clay Bennett on Sports Animal at 5pm
My guess? An announcement of a press conference this Friday to announce the name/colors and when ticket reps will start calling.
Clay Bennett to be on The Sports Animal today | NewsOK.com (http://newsok.com/clay-bennett-to-be-on-the-sports-animal-today/article/3276819/?tm=1217437180)
JOHNINSOKC 07-30-2008, 02:02 PM It looks like the announcement of the OKC team name.:)
Platemaker 07-30-2008, 02:07 PM Exactly... and announcement of an announcement....ugghh.
LordGerald 07-30-2008, 02:24 PM My assumption would be that he would discuss the radio contract with Citadel. Then, he'll discuss the transition from Seattle to OKC, the practice facility and then ticket and group sales. There's no way he's announcing the team name over the radio.
I agree. But they're hyping this thing up too much to just be an announcement about news that is already out there (radio deal).
I still contend this is a deal where he'll announce a press conference which will announce bigger news.
CCOKC 07-30-2008, 02:29 PM At least all of this name guessing may be coming to an end.
LordGerald 07-30-2008, 02:33 PM It's funny, but Clay's elusiveness is rather strategic. I've never been so excited to hear a radio interview in a long time! I was going to go to the grocery store, now I think I'll wait and go home and listen...
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 02:34 PM Saw Clay in the elevator this morning. He seemed pretty focused...a man like that always has a lot on his mind, I am sure. I said good mornig and he just nodded, but had the presence of mind to allow a lady in the elevator before him (whom i didn't see and walked in before!).
God bless Clay! :D

It woudl behoove Clay to pimp the radio deal as much as possible. I think a TV press conference might be more likely to reveal name, logo, colors.

Which is pretty much what I said. :)
sroberts24 07-30-2008, 02:46 PM they seem really excited on the animal, but i'm thinkin its announcement for the press conference

Excuse me while I go puke.
Midtowner 07-30-2008, 02:58 PM ^ Class envy rears its ugly head yet again.
It's nice to know that Bennett is a gentleman. I mean, he could present himself as being a complete douche as Cuban does.
As for the radio deal, I'm sad to see it. I've always been very unimpressed with the quality of their programming.

Midtowner, I was referring to the "God Bless, Clay." And you're smart enough to know class "envy," has nothing to do with my political positions. I can't have envy for what I already have. Some of us stand on principle and it has nothing to do with our own economic situation.
When somebody acts like Clay Bennett is some kind of God because he allowed a woman to go ahead of him in the elevator and gets these "God bless, Clay" posts - I'm sorry, it makes me a tad sick to the stomach.
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 03:05 PM Excuse me while I go puke.
You can thank him for his efforts by sending him a card. The God Bless thing was a bit of a joke, but I've had extensive interactions with one Bennett, and by any measurement, their entire family is a class act. Clay Bennett has done more for OKC than you could probably fathom, solitude, so why don't you just appreciate him like the rest of us do.

Well, you're simply not very good at the whole messageboard thing if you thought that was a hearty and heartfelt God Bless Clay for allowing a chick to go in the elevator first. Jeez...

Mallen, Mallen, Mallen......"Like the rest of us do." What makes you think I am the only one who has problems with Clay Bennett and his corporate welfare schemes? He married well, I'll give him that. He's also done some good things, okay? But to act like he's the second coming because he brings a freakin' basketball team to Oklahoma City is a bit over the top. I like sports as much as the next guy, but this is all just sooo blown up.
It. Is. A Bas-ket-ball. Team.
bornhere 07-30-2008, 03:16 PM I see Clay all the time at the Nichols Hills Starbucks. I'm always, like, "Clay, my man!!! What up, dawg?" and he's all, "Yo, bornhere. What it is, bro!!!" cause we, like, hang together, know what I mean?
And he's like getting his Frappuchoonkawino thing and I'm like with my latte and he's always like cool, y'know what I mean? He's like Jesus, okay? Or like what Jesus would be if he'd married the daughter of some bazillionaire right-winger, then covered himself with Elmer's Glue-All and rolled around in his money for a few years.
And that's cool, know what I mean?
But they're hyping this thing up too much to just be an announcement about news that is already out there (radio deal).
Over-hyping? They don't know the meaning of that.
I can't imagine that he would announce the name, colors, and logos in any forum that doesn't include at least the presence of representatives from his family's paper.

Then I'm not sure what your problem is. Sure, Bennett's father in law got his hand caught in the cookie jar some time ago and managed to buy his way out of that problem, but I don't hold that against Bennett.
Bennett's father in law would have never taken the chance on Oklahoma City which was taken by the PBC. Remember the mediocrity we had to put up with? This is not Bass Pro Shops. This is a consortium of very successful men making a huge bet on their hometown. For that, I'm grateful.

At least he gets your name right; he still calls me AFMC. I sometimes have to remind him it's AFCM. Although he means well, he slips up from time to time, which is to be expected considering it was about 20 years ago when he used to babysit me.
bornhere 07-30-2008, 03:41 PM I stood at a urinal next to Ronnie Kaye one time, too.

You mean you used to see him at Starbucks. I am at that Starbucks every morning for at least an hour, and I haven't seen him since there since at least last spring. I think I know why.

Well said Gerald, especially on the Sports Animal. I bet you hit this one right on the money.
bretthexum 07-30-2008, 03:45 PM I wonder how many people are going to "God Bless Clay" when he announces the ticket prices? Hope you can still get the cheap nosebleeds. I aint payin $75 or more for lower level.
Doug Loudenback 07-30-2008, 03:48 PM Excuse me while I go puke.
Well, with your post, my friend Solitude, I just had to do several hearty guffaws! :dizzy: :LolLolLol
The humor in your post was totally fun to smack me in the face when I read it ... but you did vote "yes" on March 4, as I recall! :dizzy:
Just guessing, but you'll be tuning in to the Sports Animal at 5:00 pm, right? :sofa:
Whoops! Reading through the thread after my reply, I see that you said to Midtowner ...
Some of us stand on principle and it has nothing to do with our own economic situation.
Well ... maybe I was wrong when I supposed you voted "yes" on March 4?
Just foolin' with you, solitude, my lonely friend!

I don't think you understand or are accurately estimating how big of a deal this is. But don't worry- that won't keep you from repaing the benefits.
Bornhere:  :tiphat:

Ahh ... but you forget that message boards like this one are instruments of the devil, no better than porn sites ... did you not get the gospel from Mr. Tramel? :sofa:
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 03:59 PM BTW: as to the thread topic- why do we think it's a "big" announcement?

Not complete. It is the OKLAHOMA CITY bas-ket-ball team!

I know I know...I feel so dirty when I'm here, but I just can't stay away from you guys!
solitude 07-30-2008, 04:03 PM Hi Doug!
You are right. I voted yes. I supported the Ford Center improvements and felt that, in the long run, it was/is best for the city. The practice facility is another question, but we don't have to go there again.
I'm really just messin' with all the "Clay worship."
Doug Loudenback 07-30-2008, 04:04 PM I know I know...I feel so dirty when I'm here, but I just can't stay away from you guys!
Does this mean that, by participating here, we are all mutually infected with a pornography virus or something??? Ok. Not a problem for me. Sex is good.

Fair enough. I'm just really messin' with YOU! But, don't you think that, at least just a little, that he is entitled to some props for bringing professional sports to OKC? At least, just a little?

You mean upper level, I'd gladly pay $75 if I could get lower level tickets for that.
plmccordj 07-30-2008, 04:18 PM Ben McCain stole a parking spot that I was waiting on at City Bites, I made a gesture and then he apologized when we got inside once. :)
Kerry 07-30-2008, 04:18 PM I know I know...I feel so dirty when I'm here, but I just can't stay away from you guys!
For the record, I am here for the chicks and I don't know anything about "you guys".
Back to topic - I don't know what this will be about but I do know it will not be about naming the team and presenting the colors. When Stern comes to town then we will get a team name press conference.
bretthexum 07-30-2008, 04:26 PM Metro - yeah thats what I meant. I'm a bit slow today.
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 04:58 PM anyone have a link to listen live?
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 05:02 PM Radio Look-up, Database of online radio streams.: Search Results (http://www.billsparks.org/cgi-bin/linkssql/search.cgi?City=Oklahoma+City)
Answered my own question.
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 05:04 PM Announcement is that WWLS is the official radio partner for the team.
LordGerald 07-30-2008, 05:22 PM Zzzzz. Typical Tra-bore. Every question is about him.
CCOKC 07-30-2008, 05:24 PM I did get excited when PJ came on though. Makes it a little more real to me.
BFizzy 07-30-2008, 05:27 PM Traber said that he would tell Trammel the colors off the air and he thanked Clay for not naming the team something like the "Vultures". So, obviously Traber knows the name and colors. Clay also said that the name announcement will be soon.
LordGerald 07-30-2008, 05:33 PM Tra-Bore knows nothing. No way Clay Bennett tells Tra-Bore anything in confidence on or off the air.
OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 05:37 PM I did get excited when PJ came on though. Makes it a little more real to me.
I agree. I turned the volume up when he came on...
FritterGirl 07-30-2008, 05:42 PM I found it interesting what Clay said about preferences to former Hornets ticket holders...that basically, the information on those ticket holders is considered proprietary information owned by the Hornets.
Having to sometimes deal with a similar situation, I can certainly see that. They will probably need to get a legal deal with the Hornets to get that info back should they choose to do so.

They won't get the database. They've tried.
I served on the marketing committee for the Ford Center vote and that was one of the first things we tried to acquire. The Hornets wouldn't give it up then, and they won't give it up now. But, with 18,000 on a prospect list, they can create something new and better.
Architect2010 07-31-2008, 12:28 AM Bornhere, are you fimiliar with a guy named "Brucie"?
betts 07-31-2008, 12:39 AM I suspect getting the list from the Hornets would create a bigger ticket problem than it would solve, and that they're not going to try terribly hard to get it. They would have to look at their list of 18,000 and figure out who among them is not on the Hornets' list. Then, you've got the issue of a significant number of those people having a different e-mail address than they did three years ago. What do they do with the people who had season tickets who are going to be displaced by the new luxury boxes or new sponsors' sections? It would be a mess.
I'm really sad about that, because I loved my seats, and I got them by being one of the first people to call and reserve season tickets when the Hornets first came. Now I have to worry about possibly being part of a lottery, and perhaps not getting a chance to pick out seats until late if at all. Plus, we had 24 seats together, and it was really fun sitting with all my friends. So, what should be exciting is a little bittersweet.
bornhere 07-31-2008, 04:15 AM I don't know Brucie.
Spartan 07-31-2008, 05:11 AM I stood at a urinal next to Ronnie Kaye one time, too.
Did he piss excellence?
Spartan 07-31-2008, 05:14 AM I did get excited when PJ came on though. Makes it a little more real to me.
I hope you realize PJ Carlesimo sucks as a head coach and he'll probably be fired mid way through the season. He was strategic though for getting the Sonics out of Seattle.
metro 07-31-2008, 08:36 AM I found it interesting what Clay said about preferences to former Hornets ticket holders...that basically, the information on those ticket holders is considered proprietary information owned by the Hornets.

I'm not sure why people thought this was such a reality or are entitled to it because they were Hornets tix holders. Bennett did not own any portion of the Hornets. They are a separate private company. I doubt Devon gives it's client list and insider info to SandRidge. Same principle. We all knew Hornets were a temporary situation.
I'm glad they are starting from scratch, new team, new owners, new city, new history. Start from the ground up like they should.
OKCMallen 07-31-2008, 08:39 AM Plus, we had 24 seats together, and it was really fun sitting with all my friends. So, what should be exciting is a little bittersweet.
Unless you're buying corporate, I think hoping for 24 seats together is pretty unrealistic unless you're up in LOUD CITY!
SoonerDustin 07-31-2008, 09:18 AM So, the guy that brokered the deal was on this morning...he said Citadel had the most unique proposal to get the deal...let me translate that for everyone...
Citadel whored out programming, gave the OKC team everything they wanted promotionally meaning if Clay says lets give away steaming piles of crap, then they will, and they caved and gave the OKC team ALL the advertising slots. NORMALLY, a station will hang on to a couple of spots as a chance to earn a "little" revenue. Not in this case. When I was in radio in this market, when something like this would come up Citadel would alway whore out...which is why the SA usually has 12 minute commercial breaks...
Midtowner 07-31-2008, 09:24 AM which is why the SA usually has 12 minute commercial breaks...
Which is why they've completely lost me as a listener.
LordGerald 07-31-2008, 09:58 AM Which is why they've completely lost me as a listener.
"Coming up next segment, fart jokes from Lump, I'll talk about my four guitars I bought from Red Dirt Guitars, and let's discuss this Favre situation. But first, let's take a break."
I can guarantee that is the script every morning at 6:59 a.m. on the Animal.
Then, later in the day as BBJ, Trabor, and the rest come on the air:
"Where are you, Al"?
