Betts.
With you 100% there. They have to nail the logo and mascot in order for it all to work. I just have this cheesy image of a guy wearing a big cloud suit with a huge yellow lightning bolt down the front.
They need to hurry with the logo, unis, and mascot. I want the Thunder to be on this fall's NBA2K9. If they wait too long that won't happen.
Blazerfan11 07-20-2008, 05:34 PM a $10 seat section for fat ladies called the "thunder thighs" is in order.

I agree that they have to nail the logo and colors. But as far as mascots, consider the San Diego Chicken, Mr. Met, the SuperSonics Squatch, or even a covered wagon. The appropriate mascot will surface with time. Thats not something I would want early in the season. Once we develop some sort of tradition is when we should consider making one.
autoMATTic 07-20-2008, 07:09 PM Oh, this is gonna be great. I can see it now:
"OU football team caught THunderage drinking at NBA game"
"OKC THunderachieves in 2009 playoff run"
"Boom Boom dancers shunned by Sally Kern for showing their THundergarments"
"OKC Rookies THunderprepared for 2008 debut"
"Dallas Thunderestimates OKC in 100-69 Loss"
"OKC lands sponsorship deal with THundearmour sportswear"
and last but not least
"Bennett and the Boys to Launch THunderarm Deodarant"
Man, I am a loser.
It seems everything with you is a play on words, huh autoMATTic?

I regret reading most of it.
Intrepid 07-20-2008, 11:17 PM Just came in from listening to ESPN radio and the night time host for Game Night on ESPN was giving large amounts of praise for the name Thunder and actually mentioned the same colors that Mark Rodgers mentioned: red, light blue and gold.
Patchy Proot 07-20-2008, 11:38 PM Holy Nickname, Batman! Jeeesh. I got it.
The Oklahoma Cityans.

So some of it was funny? I was just kidding, bored. I actually love the name. Now, if they'd just call so I can buy those tickets and prepare for one helluva basketball season!!!
andy157 07-21-2008, 01:16 AM Yeah, I'll admit to not liking country music, but I think most of country music will not work well for a NBA sporting event.
Plus, I think that OK needs to lose the redneck image, and playing country music at our games will not help.I don't like country music either. But a true Redneck has nothing to do with country music, or Oklahoma for that matter.
Thunder 07-21-2008, 01:26 AM I love country music, especially Shania!!!
OMG, they need to get Shania to do a half-time concert for the first home game!
I'll buy the ticket!!!

That is the worst logo I ever seen!
mburlison 07-21-2008, 06:09 AM To the contrary, I was saying its not required to live "anywhere" if one does not like it, not that they "should" or that I would even want anyone to leave. That said, I agree to disagree with music, as there are different tastes for all. (What country music has become is not my favorite genre either).
To the "THUNDER" name.
I don't see the cloud logo, I (and I'm sure its occured to many) see Thor, the whole Hammer of the gods thing, the god of Thunder, the Hammer which never misses etc... Ok.... just a thought ;).
hipsterdoofus 07-21-2008, 07:50 AM We may actually have a name.....
The Oklahoman is now reporting the KOCO story and Tramel has a positive, and very creative, column on the 'Thunder' name. There's even yet another short blurb in the paper about singular names.
I like how the dok article starts: "If a television report is accurate, owners of the Oklahoma City NBA team will have listened to the fans." So..thats what they are going on?

I was thinking the same thing.
However, they are probably seeing how strong the evidence is (not 100%, but still strong) and decided to roll with the story, and yet cover themselves by giving that kind of opening line.

Yeah, basically DOK doesn't want to be left out, but haven't heard anyone else reporting it. I'm thinking it could just be a diversionary tactic...set up that domain name and let people talk about it for a few days...

OKCMallen 07-21-2008, 08:42 AM Why in the world are you saying it's a possible consideration? I assume that's just a bad joke.

I'm sure it'll all be on the new game... I bet they already have a good idea on logos, colors and uni's. Whats weird is, this weekend i was playing NBA2K7, just messing around i decided to make a team with all the players they have now... minus a few key players because it was 2007... When i went to pick my teams logo there was a THUNDER logo.. You know i had to roll with that one! OKC Thunder!!
Kerry 07-21-2008, 10:18 AM Having Thor as a mascot would be pretty cool.
Thunder = Storming Buffalo mascot
Bonus points for gold/black color combo.
OKCMallen 07-21-2008, 10:33 AM Here's hoping the color schemes can line up with the Blazers and Redhawks, but gold, black, and red aren't really Thundery to me.

Don't you think Colorado University would sue for copyright enfringement?
OU Adonis 07-21-2008, 11:52 AM The name sucks. It was my least favorite of the major names floating around here. I don't buy it yet that its our name. Even the DO is backing up on it a bit.
betts 07-21-2008, 11:58 AM Don't you think Colorado University would sue for copyright enfringement?
I don't think so. We'd probably have to add a third color anyway, to allow for uniform variations, and there is so much overlap of names in sports that I don'see how you could argue that "Thunder" with a buffalo mascot is copyright infringement of "Buffaloes" It's technically a bison, anyway, so we could call our mascot a bison and there would be even less correlation.
Kerry 07-21-2008, 12:08 PM Hmmm - thundering herd of buffalos or Thor - god of Thunder. Let me think about that choice for a minute. Ok, I think I will go with Thor - god of Thunder.
If the name Thunder is chosen I think it would be in reference to the weather phenomenon and not as a reference to the bison population that once roamed the state.

CCOKC 07-21-2008, 02:35 PM I totally forgot about that. I prefer the buffalo motif but I really don't care if Thor is the mascot. I think there are so many ways you could go with Thunder marketing wise. But I'll leave that up to the experts since I am not a very creative person.
betts 07-21-2008, 03:41 PM The problem I have with Thor is not the Viking look, since I'm a former Minnesotan, but that a bunch of the minor league Thunder teams use him as their mascot/logo. If we have to be part of a crowd, we need to be different. I've now moved on to wanting to use a Thunderbird as the logo/mascot. That's really unique for the Thunder name, but is associated, and allows us to tap into the Thunderbird heritage here without taking the name of the Seattle hockey team or Albuquerque NBDL team.

Funny, I've done the same thing in NBA2K8.
Don't you think Colorado University would sue for copyright enfringement?
I agree with you. I would prefer a thunderbird logo and mascot anyway.
A thunderbird logo would make more sense given Oklahoma's heritage.
Add my vote for AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" for team song!

Wonder why, here's why, first off, consider that 3 of the 4 states you named dwarf most other state's populations. DUH
And, Washington State, or anywhere in the PAC NW I understand, but what motive do people in the 40+ states you mentioned have to hate on us?
Also, please explain the international voters that seem to feel the same way.
DUH
Thunder 07-21-2008, 08:21 PM We're the Outlaws. We're the criminals. We stole the team from Seattle. Yeah, that is what the other people across the nation is voting Outlaws for OKC. Only a handful few were honest to vote Thunder.
HOT ROD 07-21-2008, 09:00 PM ok guys, I'll admit Oklahoma City Thunder is growing on me.
But let me say this, I was daydreaming a bit and was thinking about OKC's NBA team - and just casually the name Barons just rolled off my mind.
I honestly think Oklahoma City Barons should be it. Hopefully the fat lady hasn't sung yet - nobody else is Barons (and who cares if Birmingham is? They're not even major league).
I honestly think Oklahoma City Barons should be it. Hopefully the fat lady hasn't sung yet - nobody else is Barons (and who cares if Birmingham is? They're not even major league).
No one else has it... but Birmingham. No major league team uses Thunder, so... what's the diff?
ddavidson8 07-21-2008, 09:12 PM Is it just me or is anyone else as worried about the colors as I am. A bad name can be overcome with good colors and/or the logo/mascot.
HOT ROD 07-21-2008, 09:13 PM Barons just rolls off the tounge better, to me. Plus, I saw the graphics for the Barons that was posted a few weeks ago - and it just "stuck" for me.
Barons has great marketing opportunities, and doesn' t sound hick at all. Plus, it fits OKC (be it Oil Baron, Rich Baron, or Robber Baron - all befitting OKC and not just because of Seattle - but because of OKC's history [robber barons were part of okc's history, ya know?]).
I do agree, Thunder isn't hick and does have marketing appeal and fits OKC; all very true. I was just saying Im still hoping for Barons because it's alreay in my mind that the team is the Oklahoma City Barons.
I mean, it just sounds like an NBA team, ya know.
Does Heat sound NBA to you?
I think the color/logo can almost be MORE important than the name. If they really go with the sky blue/ reddish-orange/ silver deal that would... uh, take some getting used to.
The Black/Gold combo is really the best option and its not overdone in the league.
HOT ROD 07-21-2008, 09:32 PM Heat fits Miami - and it does sound NBA to me.
Thunder does not, YET.
But Barons already does. It has some streetworth to it - something which in the NBA - HipHop world, you have to recognize. I mean, we want to be marketable.
But I agree, Thunder is slowly growing on me.
I also agree that the logo/colour means more - but what colours can you get with thunder?
jstanthrnme 07-21-2008, 09:50 PM I don't understand what the worry is about the mascot or logo is. I agree that the colors should be chosen carefully. If you consider that the city hardly has an identity yet, then you should agree that a more ambiguous logo should be chosen, and patiently let a mascot surface, and then integrate the two. That will sustain the edge of your seat excitement we all got on this boat for. We'll have things to look forward to on and off of the court. Lets play this thing smart guys.
BFizzy 07-21-2008, 11:11 PM I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet...
The NBA D-League already has teams named Thunderbirds, Stampede, and Energy.
It doesn't really matter if, in fact, the team will be called "Thunder". However, it is pretty interesting to see how those logos look when designed/approved by the NBA.

HOT ROD 07-22-2008, 02:03 AM Thunder is very minor league or WNBA.
I'd expect OKC's WNBA team to be called Thunder.
Barons or Outlaws is more befitting.

Pretty strange that they would allow that.
I'm pretty shocked at the severity of negative comments on the newsok comments section. Some pretty vicious comments over there. You would think they were talking about changing the state name to Thunder. Chill out some people!
OKCMallen 07-22-2008, 11:27 AM All the trash posts on those comments; don't sweat them MrZ.
I think it makes for an entertaining read at work.
Of all the names proposed, I liked Thunder best.
Looking forward to seeing the colors and logo.
Grant 07-22-2008, 12:11 PM Barons is much better than Thunder IMO. It doesn't have to mean robber baron or oil baron. What about the Red Baron? Or the fact that baron is a title of nobility? Thunder sounds way too WNBA to me. Plus Seattle's WNBA team is the Storm.......
Saberman 07-22-2008, 12:26 PM All the trash posts on those comments; don't sweat them MrZ.
I'm afraid a lot of those neg. comments come from people outside of Oklahoma. Mainly from a certain area of the country.
