Oklahoma City Surge

That's only if we get the team from New Orleans.

:D

Personally, I like Thunder. But that's only because of the fact that I hate pluralized names for sports teams. Sonics, Blazers, Jaguars, Bees, whatever. If you're a "team" make it singular to promote the team dynamic, attitude, and cohesiveness that's required to play basketball at a professional level. Individualizing the players only inculcates showboating and ball hogging by poor sportsmen.

I'm so full of crap.

Dawg, as long as Clay Bennett owns the team, he'll use whatever name he wants. The citizens of Seattle had their chance to support the team. On March 4th, the citizens of OKC showed the world they were ready to support the NBA. Since OKC stepped up to the plate, I would believe we're deserving of the name Sonics. With that being said, I doubt too many people would actually want the name. I'm just trying to illustrate that OKC deserves whatever name is mentioned. Afterall, Clay Bennett, an OKC investor, owns the team and this franchise will be overwhelmingly supported in OKC, unlike they were in Seattle.

Actually it won't be the Sonics because the name "Sonics" is owned by the city of Seattle ...If Clay and his group of owners move from Washington he will have to come up with a new name...

Seattle has already said it won't sell the name..

Oklahoma City Outlaws would be perfect. I mean, just look at other regional NBA basketball team names:

Houston Rockets (NASA)
San Antonio Spurs (cowboys)
Dallas Mavericks (another name for an outlaw)

And if you really think of other team names in the NBA:

Orlando Magic
Atlanta Hawks
Utah Jazz (taken from when the team was in New Orleans)

And many more to name. It can't get any worse than those names there.

Just like the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Outlaws sounds good. It has a knack to it. This team won't have to be destitute of a new identity because they will create it when they move on in. The Outlaws vs. Mavericks just sounds like a good match up doesn't it? My only hope is that they get a good artist on the uniforms and logo for this team.

The Sonics name, brand, colors, banners etc are owned by Bennett and Co.

If Seattle wants to negotiate for them as part of a lease buyout agreement, I'm sure that can be worked out.

Why, then, would Clay OFFER the City of Seattle to keep the name as a part of an agreement?

By the way, did anyone see the latest Sunday Oklahoman? It has a page where you can design the uniform and name the team, just for SNG's. The best submissions would be featured on later Oklahoman's.

Well, anyway, here's my interpretation of what I think should be on the backs of our players and fans should the team name change.

Please, let me know what you think, and I welcome any suggestions.

Those of you wanting "Outlaws" should probably shelve that as a possibility. At least as long as David Stern is running the NBA. Stern has worked hard to change the image of the NBA with dress codes, tighter enforcement on the court, higher penalties and fines, etc. It's been described by many to change the "outlaw" image of the NBA. I don't think they would turn around and approve "Outlaws" as an actual team name. Not in the NBA. One problem from a team member of the "Outlaws" and you would have people saying the team is well-named and so forth. I could be wrong, but I just don't see the NBA approving that name.

OR

Oilers instead?

I like the Oilers, just because my late grandma loved the Houston Oilers and she's the one who got me hooked on sports...plus don't we have an oil well in front of our state capital?

After that I'd go with in no particular order:

89ers-Who cares if there is already the 76ers or the 49ers. Both of those dates are specific to history pertaining to those states so in no way is it stealing.

Rush-I've always like the nicknames without the 's at the end like the Magic or the Heat, it just sounds cool. Plus, it ties in to LandRush

Posse-Just think it sounds schnazzy

Thunder-We are in tornadoe alley and I hear when there's a tornadoe, some thunder and lighting is usually accompanied with it :)

Dream- I haven't heard this one yet...just made it up. Oklahoma City Dream has a ring to it in my opinion.

Regardless of what they decide to call it, I definitely think it should be Oklahoma City instead of Oklahoma and that the public should at least get some sort of a vote as to what the team should be called.

I like the team name "Barons"
-It's original.
-It plays to the fact that the oil industry is what made Oklahoma's economy.
-It's sounds powerful.
-It's not negative.

I have to stick with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Barons don't do it for me at all. We've heard the word a lot around Oklahoma because we use it for "Oil Barons," but it's actually a name that most people would associate with the nobility title of Baron, which certainly wouldn't work. A lot of people would wonder what's up with Barons and Baronesses in Oklahoma.

With our usage around here, a baron is only an industrialist. I don't get the excitement. Why honor the wealthy owners of an oil company as opposed to those who actually do the work?

Barons = confusion and lack of fun and excitement. (To me anyway. Obviously others disagree.)

I like Barons, it has a classic ring to it. Much like Knicks, Celtics, Pacers, and Sonics.

When you first hear the name Barons, you have to think about it, and then you are like , yeah, I like the sound of that. It is a name that maybe does need explaining to outsiders much like a Sooner, but they are both original in sports.

Either way it will be fun coming up with a name. However their will never be a name that all are in agreement with.

History would indicate the team name would remain the same in a team move. This was the case when the Jazz moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City, Lakers moved from Minnesota to LA, Hornets from Charlotte to New Orleans, Kings from Kansas City to Sacramento.

History would indicate such, but the Sonics name will stay in Seattle if Bennett and the NBA have their way. Bennett has said such and is already negotiating the buyout with leaving everything Sonics behind except for the players and coaches.

So start thinking up names for the new Oklahoma City __________.

I think it's ok. If it's associated with the generic nobility, it's fine--no different than the Kings or Royals. We don't have royalty in this country, so it's just as relevant here as it is in KC. But there is a more localized reference there, and if people care to research it, they'll know. It's not unlike the San Francisco 49'ers. I'm sure a lot of people have no idea what it references (The Gold Rush), but it has a good ring to it.

Throw in some laser lightning shows with sfx and you have a pretty cool theme inside the arena.
You can also do many sharp looking things with a logo....check out the Berlin Thunder logo with Thor's hammer worked into the logo.
They are a now defunct team from NFL Europa.

I don't think there is any need for us to think about names, or whether it should be the "Oklahoma City__________" or simply, the "Oklahoma ________." If those things haven't already been decided, Clay Bennett has no business owning a basketball team. I mean, think about it:

If the team is able to get out of the lease in Seattle in time to play the 2008-2009 season in Oklahoma City, they're going to have to do a lot really fast. The name and logo are on a lot more than just the team's jerseys. There's signage, tickets, merchandise, advertising (print and broadcast) and more than I could probably imagine. They're not going to have time to ask everyone what they think or sponsor a contest.

And to boot, they have to have league approval.

LOL... that was great.

Thunder implies power; its a statement, it demands your attention. You don't have to think about it - is it a jet.. or a Native American statement - a car maybe? No, you know what thunder is. It doesn't mince words and it leaves you expecting drama right here right now. It tells you to watch out for lightening strikes...
